the new hampshire democratic convention today will host 19 contenders and nbc's vaughn hillyard has been in manchester for us where the convention is set to kick off in less than two hours. vaughn, you are there and i see mayor pete buttigieg right behind you there. what's going on. what your hearing from voters? >> jo, welcome from new hampshire. this is a major day in new hampshire. democratic presidential politics. you got 19 candidates along with pretty much all of their activists across new england here. those 19 candidates are going to be inside of this arena here in manchester throughout the day. their activist julian assange have been out here since before the sun came down. you have delegates inside that arena that includes officials, activists, but thousands of members from the public. we've been here -- last hour we talked the to joe biden people. i want the to introduce to carrie. what led you to volunteer for cory booker? >> i met him in april at a house party and i loved what he had to say. >> reporter: have you done one much these state conventions before? >> no. >> report

vaughn hillyard is in odessa, texas, and hans nichols is at the white house. vaughn, if you can run us through here. what you know, what the latest is on the ground. >> good morning, allison. if you come to west texas here, you have two sister cities, midland and odessa, a population 300,000. the major metropolitan areas are el paso, which is 300 miles to the west and 300 miles to the east is ft. worth and dallas. here in this community, over ten miles, from where that initial traffic stop happened yesterday, at 3:13 local time, in which two deputies attempted to pull over a gold honda. that's when this gunman began firing at those deputies. one of the individuals were shot. the hospital notes that that officer is in stable condition. there were two other officers, two other deputies that were shot and also in stable condition. but there's very much unknown about the victims and those who have died at this time. there's 21 that are injured, 7 that are in critical condition at this time, 5 that are dead. we know one individual among those dead is a high school s

and we have nbc's vaughn hillyard driving us live from odessa, texas. vaughn, what is the mood on the ground this morning there? >> it's still early in the morning here, jo, in odessa, texas. these are two cities populations combined, and that's where the traffic stop took place on i-20 from midland heading into odessa. as authorities have said, it was a gold honda stopped at 3:30 p. -- 3:13 yesterday afternoon. two deputies were in the control vehicle when he took aim at the deputies. one was shot and taken hot hospital and in stable condition. it was at that point the vehicle downwards down the atlantic 20, stopping at multiple points taking aim at otherwise random people along the road. eyewitnesses described the gunman taking aim, one individual saying that the gunman took aim at her own vehicle with four children. i want to let you hear from one of those eyewitnesses as this unfolded here. ultimately as you said it was ten miles away before they got to the point here at this movie theater in which there were hundreds of people leaving the scene as t

joining us now from odessa, texas, msnbc correspondent vaughn hillyard for us. talk about how the community is reacting after the tragic shooting. >> yeah, good morning. you know, the fact is that most of the names are actually not been identified by authorities at this time. you have seven deaths, 22 injured and across this community there's still a lot of question marks. so over the course of two hours, havoc was wreaked here from beginning off of that i-20 where that initial stop by those two deputies took place. to ultimately this movie theater/bowling alley complex where everything came to an end. you drive around town there's still 15 active crime scenes at play including this one here at this movie theater. we do know two of the names of those that were deceased at this time. that was rodolfo arco, 56-year-old father of three. a truck driver. as well as mary granados. she was a letter carrier here. the u.s. postal service put out a statement last night saying their deepest regards to her family. but there's also a lot of questions as to where does this st

our road warriors vaughn hillyard and beth fouhy live at the convention in manchester, new hampshire. vaughn, we'll start with you. because we're trying to get that sort of, you know, seeing which way the wind is blowing, who had the most juju if you will, who did the best for the crowd? >> well, number one, we should say that the convention officially just ended, richard. it has been more than a 12 hour day around these parts of manchester, new hampshire. you said who had the most juju among the 19 candidates. well, they each had ten minutes, but we should note elizabeth warren's started with an ovation from the crowd first two minutes. they had those clapping sticks that made noise. felt like old school convention here. elizabeth warren, you know, she is obviously the neighbor from next door from manchester -- or from massachusetts, excuse me. but this is a state elizabeth warren particularly is looking to take on bernie sanders who back in 2016 beat hillary clinton by a substantial amount here in that primary. elizabeth warren was well received and clearly has momentum on her side.

nbc news road warrior vaughn hillyard spending time in the hawkeye state joins me now from des moinesunderstand it you were at that huge steak fry this weekend there, the iowa steak fry. our latest nbc news wall street journal poll found just 9% of democratic primary voters nationwide have made up their minds who they're going to vote for. who made an impression there in iowa this weekend? >> reporter: and i think, craig, that's very reflective here in iowa as well. "the des moines register" released a poll here this weekend that showed elizabeth warren jumping up seven points since june, putting her at 22%, joe biden at 20%. we're calling it a statistical tie with the margin of error. but at the same time the polling tells us it points to soft support for these candidates, attesting for 9% of the country's democrats saying they've made up their minds. among the warren supporters, 12% are firmly backing her in the iowa caucus february 3rd. her support is soft and all of these candidates. it's an open game here. while you have seen the likes of beto o'rourke who had a rise in the sprin

joining me now vaughn hillyard. mike, you're with joe biden.e biden has done this dance twice before in new hampshire. this is his hird time. what's in store? >> well, he's just taken the stage in a venue right behind me here for his first of two events today. one of the reasons i love covering new hampshire politics here is you tend to see some volatility in the electorate here. one of the early states where the biden campaign is tempering expectations, it is here in new hampshire. one reason for that is that volatility. exit polls have shown that voters wait until the last minute to make up their mind. but often we also see neighboring state candidates doing exceptionally well. bernie sanders beat hillary clinton in 2016. john kerry from massachusetts won here in 2004, and so we see in those polls, elizabeth warren, bernie sanders doing well. how do they counter act that? it starts with resources. it deals with relationships, they have deep relationships, especially with unions here. the firefighters union putting their first paid advertising

vaughn hillyard is joining us from london dairy, new hampshire. you were in d.c.ay, new hampshire today, the life of a road warrior. we understand your sources are talking to you about senator harris's campaign in new hampshire. >> reporter: five months out from the new hampshire primary it's fall season here, and this is really when it ramps up. kamala harris's team is talking through the summer, hallie, saying, hey, after labor day is really when this campaign is going to kick into gear. you've got the debate next week. but i was talking with a campaign aide. and looking at new hampshire, if you look at the ground staff of these operations, they have just over 20 campaign staffers. compare that to elizabeth warren and pete buttigieg who have about 55 each, the disparity is large here. and kamala harris has been to new hampshire just four times since launching her presidential bid. by far the fewest number of visits, fewest number of stops among the top tiers of candidates. but the campaign aide says, look, as a presidential campaign you have to choose where your

nbc's vaughn hillyard joins us with more. did anyone stand out to you last night? it seems like all of the candidates are pretty much on the same page when it comes to this issue. it must be dealt with. >> yeah. it was something to watch the number of candidates that released plans ahead of last night's town hall there. most of these plans outlined major climate action that would require congressional action. most of these plans costing the federal government from $1.5 trillion to $3 trillion. kamala harris proposing a public/private partnership. what you heard was each of the ten candidates having to address the serious issue of climate change over the course of 30 minutes. going through these, there are questions pertaining to particularly those on both coasts. you have the democrats that are essentially targeting the east coast saying, look at the rising sea levels. look at the hurricanes. to those in the midwest look at the floods, the droughts. to those in the west coast, look at the number of wildfires that have been taking place. i want to play a little bit

let's go to vaughn hillyard joining us live from odessa, texas. you've been watching this unfold. there have been a few more people who have passed away because of injuries. what can we expect from the police update? >> that police update is coming at the top of the hour. over the course of this morning, there's still a lot of question marks. we now know according to odessa police department that there are now seven victims. seven deaths in this shooting. the eighth one being the gunman. those were two more deaths than what we originally thought overnight. that would leave to our understanding about five still in critical condition. there would be 19 injured overall. we know that one of those deaths includes an odessa high school student. we're awaiting a name. we're awaiting an understanding more about who those seven victims are at this time. we do know that one of those injured was a 17 month old. a 17 month old. she was transported yesterday to lubbock, medical center. her family posted online overnight that shrapnel from a bullet entered not only through her chest but through
