vc -- how little diversity there is in the vc community.t else can be done to ensure that we get over this disgusting hurdle that is going on in the industry? martin: we need to start with us. we need to act on what we can really control. for us, it means making sure we open up and look at the broader range of candidates. if we only look at our personal network, which because we are more male around the table, it may be more male-oriented as well. i think that's a critical piece. we've been doing that for the past -- from the beginning of the firm, but we really emphasized that in the past five years, passed 10 years -- past 10 years, but we need to do more. more systematically, one of the issues related to that is, if you look at -- women with a computer science degree, the percentage has decreased since the 1980's. that is something that needs to be addressed as well, well before people decide to go with a vc. that's an issue with the pipeline. caroline: we hope more entrepreneurs come through as well. martin will be sticking with me. blo

women have come forward about sexual harassment from vc's. losses have been filed.t is your take on the bro culture problem in silicon valley? >> i don't mean to trivialize it, it is a problem, and i think it is probably, actually understated and underreported. it's probably way worse than we've seen so far. to be blunt about it, i think in a lot of cases the investors in some of these venture firms are simply ignoring it and maybe paying lip service to it, but ignoring it, and funding some of the enterprises anyway. it is widely understood that some of these issues were things that had been said in the background, and yet new funds were raised, and on and on. until the capital being committed by these lp's to the venture funds start to take it seriously and invest in more directly in women running the funds, and maybe gender specific funds, or people of color funds, you will continue to see lipservice paid. when push comes to shove, the money is flowing into these anyway. even when they have heard about some of these things. emily: we have seen a lot of long-winded

and we developed the vc the two dotted lines, i guess there in your chart, the lower line is a historic average level of army modernization across that entire post-world war ii period. the highlight is the average level of army modernization during periods when on those actually modernizing. iin the cycles when earning was seeking to replenish or regenerate its technology, you had a higher level up at around 35 billion, and and historical average being about 30 billion. that's in constant fy '17 dollars. then you see where we are today which is about $5 billion below the historical average for army modernization, about $10 billion below the level during periods when earning was actually engaging in aggressive modernization. so that suggests that if the army is seeking to modernize this technology today, it is going to probably require additional funding to actually make that happen. let's talk about this issue of the priorities, and in order to get funding for army modernization you got to be able to go to the congress and also to leadership of dod and say this is why we need this fundi
