i'm ali velshi. i'm in orange, texas, about five miles west of the louisiana border amidst the ruins from hurricane laura. this is not over yet. this continues to be a category 1 storm. it is now about two hours due north-northeast of where i am and it is still a category 1 hurricane, still inflicting damage. the damage has been quite serious, however. while this is not the worst of it -- they've got trees down here and buildings damaged, across western louisiana, heading into northern louisiana and the state of texas there is, in fact, a lot of damage. it came onshore last night as a category 4 storm with 150-mile-per-hour winds which would make it the strongest storm -- tied for the strongest storm ever to hit western louisiana. it's now a category 1 storm still, straight due north of where it came onshore. more than 450,000 people at last report in texas and louisiana are without power. these reports come in fairly slowly. we've seen bucket trucks getting out there because the winds on the western

joining us now is "today" co-host al roker, msnbc's ali velshi in beaumont, texas, where a curfew is in place. ali, bring us up to speed on what you are seeing, are people now listening to the evacuation orders that are being issued by officials in both states? >> reporter: some, ayman. texas is not on record as one of the places that takes evacuation orders all that seriously. people like to ride these things out. this is an area that not only gets hurricanes, but has experienced both tropical storm imelda and hurricane harvey, devastating to this particular area, if you recall. the water plant stopped here, flooded a great deal, we're in a low area of beaumont, a little -- about ten feet above sea level now. you see some of the bayous and get the impression of where they are as related to their banks. just to the left, just to give you a sense of how low it is, that's route 10. the direction you're looking at is west. this is east. you can see these are electrical trucks coming in. we have seen nothing but electrical trucks, emergency vehicles, tree trimming trucks getting into pos

ali velshi, thank you very much. and let's bring in "today" show cohost al roker with a look at where the storm is headed next. so al, it's over land. it's weakened. what's the big concern right now? >> well, the big concern, katy, is going to be the winds. and the possibility of tornadoes. as we look right now on the live radar, you can see the system now pushing up to the north. we still have tornado watches for a good portion of louisiana, into mississippi, and central arkansas at this hour. the latest, it is a tropical storm, 65 miles east-northeast of shreveport, with 65-mile-per-hour winds. that still is significant, katy, with northerly winds, a northern movement of 15. it will be weakening, but as you saw the root ball systems where chris jansing was, this system is now moving into a lot of residential neighborhoods. not only do you have flooding but strong winds and tornadoes possible. tomorrow, it still weakens, but still continues with those winds. the flood threat and more tornadoes continues on to the ea

it's reaching 150 mph, joining us from now, ali velshi, working this story, awaiting the arrival of the. ali? >> reporter: hey, ari. to use beat lingo here, the testimompo of the storm has pic up. i'm on the northwest quadrant of the hurricane, which is the best place to be. what happens is, the wind is coming from the north, and it's blowing the water south. which means it's blowing it to the gulf of mexico. we were worried about a storm surge here. they experienced flooding in tropical storm imelda, it flooded during superstorm harvey, and rita, which dumped a lot of wafter here. but we'll be spared the worst of it on this side. but if you're in western louisiana, as opposed to northeastern texas, you're getting a massive storm surge, plus 150-mile-per-hour winds probably within the next hour and a half to two. and that will cause remarkable damage. the winds will be pushing north for the first part of the storm. and the storm will keep on going. it's going to be a tropical storm into arkansas, probably. then this skews all the way north and then east, out through the northeastern sta

joining me now are nbc's al roker and ali velshi in louisiana. ali, we know that parts of louisiana are also under a tornado threat. tell us about what the weather pattern looks like right now and what are you seeing in terms of big picture trends. >> reporter: the two big trends are going to be this vigorous system. the feeder bands extend all the way to alabama. we have tornado watches from louisiana through mississippi and up into arkansas. as it pushes north it will bring more activity. it's 65 east northeast of shreveport. it's moving north at 15. it's going to weaken, but it's still powerful with strong winds. it will bring flooding rain and the threat of tornados. it weakens on friday but moves up into ohio and mississippi river valleys. by saturday it's off the northeast coast and finally clears off. we're worried about the winds as the winds push north. we're seeing power outages in litt little rock. it's going to be bringing down trees and power lines. that's why the outage potential through friday brings it up through the appalachians

back with us is ali velshi in beaumont, texas, where he's going to get the unusual circumstance of winds from the north even though a hurricane is passing from the south to the north, to his east. you could probably be a better job explaining that than i can. >> reporter: hurricane runs counter clockwise and the net effect is the wind that is blowing on beaumont. the track has changed a little bit to the east. we're going to get the counterclockwise winds blowing the water towards the gulf of mexico. i'm at interstate 10 right now. the water will be forced back -- it's a reverse surge. it's like a really low tide in the ocean. you see the force of the wind pushing the rain out. there's rain coming down and that's the detrimental part. the flooding that you're going to see in western louisiana is going to be very different than what we're going to be seeing here in eastern, north eastern texas. we're not far away from where the worst is going to be. however, we're still about two hours away from the inland worst of it where port arthur is just a few miles from where we are, and it's lower
