i'm ali velshi.just watched as the motorcade carrying late president jimmy carter travel from americus, georgia, through his hometown of plains to nearby boyhood home of archery. the motorcade is making its journey to atlanta where carter will lie in repose at the carter presidential center until tuesday morning before his body makes its way to washington, d.c. next week. and we will follow these movements throughout the day. but we begin this hour with the latest from capitol hill where republicans have now officially taken control of both the house and the senate as the 119th congress gavelled into session yesterday. republicans got off to a much smoother start this time around than they did two years ago when the house was brought to a standstill for days because of a bitter and protracted battle for the speakership. kevin mccarthy ultimately won that election after 15 rounds of voting, but he would be booted from the chair just 269 days later. the third shortest tenure in speakership history. his

and velshi starts now. good morning. saturday, january the 11th. it's a tough morning. we're going to continue with the catastrophic wildfires in california. they've incinerated now about 58mi!s of the greater los angeles area. officials say, based on infrared imaging, at least 12,000 structures have been destroyed. and when i say destroyed, you have to see some of these images. these are not partially destroyed. this looks like a war zone. more than 180,000 people have been displaced from their homes through mandatory evacuations. many are voluntarily evacuating because these fires are in some places where you can't get out of easily. if a mandatory evacuation were to take place, single roads to major highways. at least 11 people have died. officials were just beginning to access certain areas for welfare checks to see if people were there to check on missing persons reports on thursday, and they warned that the death toll could grow. evacuation orders for the largest fire, the one you've probably seen the most images of the palisades fire have expanded. that fire is s

we're going to bring you the very latest, including a report on the ground on another hour of velshi, which begins right now. hey. good morning. sunday, january the 12th. we begin this morning in southern california, where firefighters gained crucial ground against deadly wildfires overnight. but more wind is coming and the fires continue to blaze through densely populated urban areas in and around los angeles. at this hour, we are expecting a news conference from los angeles mayor karen bass. any minute now. we're going to bring you that when it happens. but here's where things stand right now. officials say more than 12,000 structures have been destroyed or damaged since the fires began on tuesday. thousands more remain under threat. 16 people are believed to have died due to fire related causes. these are already on track to become one of the natural, the costliest natural disasters in u.s. history. the two largest fires known as the palisades. that's the one at the bottom of your screen to the left, and the eaton fire on the top of your screen to the right, have consumed nearly 38
