but here's the question. 9 million iphones are predicted to come to verizon. they handle that kind of network load? will they start dropping calls more? >> are you saying switch your service now or are you saying to people, wait and see? >> reporter: there are people who have to be first, who have to be the early adopters, and they're willing to take that risk. but i say, wait and see how verizon handles the load. >> practically, for me, what are the comparative advantages? >> reporter: if downloading big files or watching video on the phone is important, then at&t has the edge. >> so, you're saying, don't forget there are still trade-offs -- >> there are other things that are in play. if you travel a lot, in asia or europe, the verizon iphone may -- doesn't perform as well. but on the flip side, there's been a new trend called tethering. well, with verizon, they are going to let you create a wi-fi hot spot off the phone and power up to five different devices. with at&t, it's much more limited. >> i just want to say, becky, i will be calling you to tether me.

it is now official the word came from verizon that they will carry the iphone. while the excitement has been building for quite some time. there's still many questions and concerns for customers. ktvu jade hernandez joins us with more. >> the manager of this verizon store will allow him to tell family and friends, yes, you can finally get an iphone with verizon service. >> early next month, iphone iv will be part of the portfolio of product the. >> reporter: beginning f ebruary 10th verizon customers will be able to p reorder online for an iphone iv. the iphone prices are $ 199- point for a 16-gig, and $ 299 with the bigger the big -- bigger-gig. one of the complaints from at&t was dropped calls. but keep in mind, this iphone cannot run voice and data simultaneously as it does on the at&t and verizon is pushing the 4-g network. we spoke to residents all over the bay area this morning. >> i always complain dropped so many calls. i would love to do that. >> i'm happy that at&t has some competition, i suppose. my experience is over the past two years that an iphone

analysts expect apple will sell up to 13 million iphones through verizon. add in at&t sales and you get 22 million iphones sold in the united states this year-- a 50% jump over last year. and analysts estimate apple will get $400 for each phone sold by either carrier. but verizon should also do well, says telecomm analyst john hodulik, since an iphone user pays an additional $35 a month for a data plan. >> a smartphone customer is a better customer than a traditional customer. an iphone customer is a better customer than a traditional smartphone customer. >> reporter: but hodulik expects at&t to fight back with more incentives, more marketing and more aggressive efforts to keep customers now that it is losing its exclusive right to sell iphone service. hodulik's firm has done business with att in the past year. >> i wouldn't call it a new war or anything, but i would think the level of competitive intensity is going to go up as a result of the loss of exclusivity, as every other carrier tries to defend their market share. so that is likely cause margins to
