verizon, if you think about what the a a well strategy is, content and platform, verizon a more same thing on larger scale, nfl content and premium type content on one side, and distribution and video content delivery networks on the other side, so our strategies are actually similar. verizon is a big believer in content. we are a big believer in content, so i think there is a bright, bright future here were business, of the aol which is content and platforms, and it mirrors the verizon businesses, so we are excited. cory: i would not have thought of the nfl and huffington post business, whichas being good businesses, i see your point, with them together. they have an idea of an ad they want, to want to know --e the ad is going to go, where the ad is going to go, with last quarter's results, do you think that spurred this deal and the timing of this deal? tim: the deal, we were already working on it, and i think the results we showed in q1 were really strong, and verizon, i think, new where we were. i do not think this deal was predicated on individual day of trading or results. it w

we start with verizon.country's largest wireless carrier has now found ways to expand its footprint into video and online ads. verizon has agreed to buy a love for $4.4 billion. is getting the company that owns "the humphrey can post -- the huffington post." the $3 billion legal pot business in the u.s. still cannot find a place to stash its cash. at last count, small banks and credit unions are doing business with the marijuana trade. it is legal in 23 states. this is more than year after treasuries told banks that they can open accounts without fear of legal or regulatory problems. thanks say they won't provide services to companies that engage in activities that are legal under federal law. 23 states have now okayed the sale of pot. call it a hangover from the soaring popularity of bourbon. there is a shortage of barrels used to age booze. barrel makers cannot find enough white out because the industry has not recovered from the housing price. bourbon sales up 35% in the past five years. those are some o

what does verizon want for all of this money?verizon wants is access to aol's adept technology. they are really good in the mobile video space. that is where all of the growth is in terms of advertising. that is an arena in which verizon wants to get into. in regards to how much money they paid, while $4.4 billion sounds like a lot it is only a drop in the bucket for verizon. this is a company that made 130 billion dollars last year. it is the largest wireless network in the united states. it has the cash to spend on aol. laura: what is it mean for the american consumer who does not have $130 billion, and is just paying bills to verizon? >> it is early in the game. the deal still has to close. if you look at the language verizon is using, it wants to be a one-stop shop for customers. the customer would use their wireless internet, mobile phone services, and they would get content from aol. aol owns "the huffington post" techcrunch, and other media. verizon hopes they will get access to all of that content and that is what they wi

verizon down by a tad. more on what this deal means for investor and the media landscape. >> as you mentioned, it is not your parents's aol that we remembered that did represent the internet back in the early to mid-90s with the wild garden and the enormous market value that let it go into a quiet time-warner. a disaster for all the companies involved. not aol shareholders. back on that fateful day in early 2000 it was. aol goes on to be spun off by time-warner in 2009. as i said it's not that company any longer. the focus of the company while it has a lot of content sites including the "huffington post" and tmz shifted to ad technology. selling and delivering ads into digital mobile devices. that's the key and the company has been one of the key players in doing that. that seems to be the main reason why verizon is interested. they were talking about a joint venture and i'm told by people familiar with the situation and the talks went on and off and came back to this idea of aol getting bigger scale. hence

and, verizon gets none of that. now with aol they will capture a huge volume of advertising that not just on their mobiles but on sprint's and t-mobile's as well. >> this is obviously a smart deal for verizon. >> very smart. liz: was this, sort of, aol was looking for some lifeline to come over the cliff to help them? >> tim armstrong is an ad salesman. he was in charge of advertising at google before he came to aol. this is the first guy verizon ever had that understands the real value of advertising in mobile. he had no place to go. he had grown aol about as far as it was going to go. when it was spun out from time warner it was 3.4 billion market cap as an independent public company. $4 billion is knot much of a premium. his company's market cap was $4 billion a couple months ago. so verizon's is getting a relative bargain. liz: very much so. >> the big thing they have got, a, advertising as a dual revenue he will stream, and b, tim armstrong. he is really mr. advertising. david: dennis it will still be a tough s

what are verizon doing? they're buying apparently according to insiders because of programmatic ad platforms, which basically means ad sales will get a big boost over at verizon, where at the moment they're only 1% of sales. aol apparently is around about 2% of the $51 billion u.s. ad market. so, it could really give a big boost to verizon, which actually has got some bad news as well. verizon communications and sprint have got combined $158 million. this is because the fcc has said they've been cramming which is basically unauthorized charges on customers' bills, including one-time fees of 99 cents to $4.99. now they've got to give back that money. verizon's agreeing to give back $70 million in refunds and sprint is giving back at least $50 million in refunds. tom wheeler from the fcc said for too long customers have been charged on their phone bills for things they did not buy, luke. >> and talking about the media here, facebook interestingly enough, steve, is starting to publish articles directly from new
