on saturday afternoon, three friends were walking down the street in burlington, vermont. these are three guys who have known each other since they were kids. they're all 20 years old now. they all went to the same quaker school together growing up. now they're 20 years old, college aged, and all in great schools. one goes to trinity school in connecticut, one goes to brown university in rhode island, one goes to halverferred college in pennsylvania. they were in vermont for thanksgiving weekend because the kid who goes to brown, his family lives in burlington where he spent a lot of time growing up. his uncle and his mom's mom. his mom's brother and his mom's mom, his uncle and his grandmother, live next door to each other in burlington, quite near the university of vermont. again, he spent tons of time there growing up and apparently both for this thanksgiving and for the previous few thanksgivings he and his friends are gone there to spend thanksgiving with him and his extended family. this is the young man at brown, a picture of him with his mom in the center there, an

again, police in burlington, vermont, are still trying to figure out a motive for this. they're looking at the possibility that this was a hate crime. here now is an attorney that is representing some of the family members that say the details surrounding this shooting really believes them to believe that this in fact was a hate crime. >> the suspect walked up to them and shot them. they weren't robbed. they weren't mugged. it was a targeted shooting and a targeted crime. and they were wearing the kkeffiyeh. it's a very well-known symbol. it's a very well-known cloth that is very symbolic of the palestinian cause, the palestinian culture and history. so the fact that they were wearing this and fell victim to a shooter leads us to believe that that played a role, their identity played a role in them being targeted. >> all right. so the chief of police out in burlington said that he believes no one can really look at this incident without thinking this was a hate-motivated crime. alex, one final note out here. the fbi said they are aware of this incident, and they are prep

all of them had been visiting vermont over the thanksgiving holiday when burlington police say a manescribed only as a white man approached them and then fired his handgun injuring all three of them. again, that is the only suspect information that's been shared by burlington police who say they're not quite ready to establish this yet as a hate crime. though this is certainly something they are taking a very close look at, given at least two of these young men were wearing the traditional scarves, a symbol of solidarity with palestinian at the time of the shooting yesterday which happened to take place close to the university of vermont. but that's not where these students attended. let me bring you up to speed on the identifies of three young men according to what we have heard from the institute for middle eastern understanding which is in close contact with the families of tahseen ahmad, who is the gentleman that you saw on the left of that photo, kinnan abdalhamid who is young man at the center hugging both of his friends and on the right you'll see hisham awartani. we understan

you know, when i talk to vermonters about this and i say, do you think that if a justice of the vermont supreme court or a justice of the united states supreme court should be required to let you know, and the public know, if they got private jet travel to a location to get on a private yacht to take a private vacation, they have an obligation to disclose that. and vermonters look at me in dismay and they say, peter, are you serious? they can do that? this is not about disclosure, this is about astonishment that someone in a position of authority that every vermonter knows is getting the offer of a free air travel, or a free yacht trip in the indonesian islands, it has nothing to do as persons, it has to do with who they are because of their responsibility and role as a united states supreme court justice. so this question of gifts and the bare minimum of having to disclose it, how is it even a question? and you know, i served in the house, as you know, mr. president, and in 2011, i and several of my colleagues wrote a letter inquiring about these gifts and why is it that they didn't ha
