and then retiring early to become a gentleman farmer, his plantation at mount vernon. and, of course, a deep connection as a farmer to the cycles of the weather, the land, the quality of the soil, the rotation of crops. it's fascinating to read his intimate study of these things. and then, of course, moving on to the american revolution and the post-war period and the transformations that we see in his views after independence and the struggle both, during both administrations, his two terms, to keep this new, young country together as the european powers at the various or borders were struggling to tear it apart. and then, of course, back to the land again in retirement as farmer washington. so what i'd like to do is take you through some slides tonight, show you some of the maps that have been incorporated into the book, and i think the maps give us a couple of things. one, they place us at the scene of the most dramatic events of washington's life and give us a view. we're really looking over his shoulder because these are the maps that he used, that he owned or dre

one of the things i did was to call mount vernon, talk to the labor in there.lot of material ended up at the bus and atheneum. and what happened i think was that, you know, as one scholar has pointed out very interestingly in the wake of the civil war, virginia's first families were on hard times. and so, the yellow outlets, for example call it handed down through succession of nephews and kept in the family of fun as possible. but in 1876, at the centennial exposition in philadelphia there is a big auction and a lot of washington's possessions went there. and so they have been scattered, but there are groupings that are being kept together. this map now resides at the huntington library, santa barbara, california. so it's a bit of a treasure hunt to pull them all together. >> do you recall any of the maps for any maps from the dismal swamp area because he was -- >> yeah, he was an investor in the dismal swamp company, which i guess would be north carolina today. i did see them -- you know, again, there are certain strands of the story but i just didn't have th

vernon and of course deep connection to the quality of the soil, the rotation of crops. it's fascinating to read his intimate study of these things. .. >> who in the book less than hastings we have been able to do with the art director and the designer creating beautiful objects we can show close up some of the maps. even adds her 10 by 13 format splashed over two pages it is hard to see the details. there's a lot of detail looking where washington was born and grew up and of course, this is the country he returned to after his great victory at yorktown and comes full circle from the manuscript of 17,511th edition 1753. right at the beginning of washington's military career. at this moment where joshua fry who drew the map is a riding out to meet washington on the frontier. so there is a collision of maps and life in. but here is a detailed view that gives a view of one of the most important forces in the life of the washington that is called the northern neck proprietary. a piece of land granted by the king to a single man lowered fairfax more than 5 million acres about

everyone knew the terms of the will, and every slave at mount vernon knew whether he or she was one of washington's slaves or one of the dower slaves. and what it meant was that evert time 125 slaves looked at martha washington, they said the second that that lady is dead, i'm a freeid person. martha was so unnerved by the situation and really felt that her life was in danger that she consulted george's nephew who was an associate justice of the supreme court, and he said, you're right to be afraid. yo and he said, just go ahead and s free those slaves now which is exactly what she did which was a very smart thing to do. so a year after george. washington died but a yeareor before martha died, those slaves were freed. okay. i'm just touching the, you know, the surface of a very rich and eventful history, but no speech on washington last as long as the rev ruse their -- revolutionary war, and i'm sure you are all brimming with questions. earlier today i held an event in my district in vernon hills to highlight yet one small very small section in this legislation, one that will have a devastating impact on businesses. the new 1099 rules. this provision will unfairly burden small businesses with mounds of paperwork and compliance fees and will certainly hinder the economy at the worst possible time. fortunately i believe that most in this body see the wisdom in correcting this terrible legislative mistake. i am proud to be a co-sponsor of this bill, to repeal these unworkable and unnecessary and unproductive 1099 rules. i look forward to working with both republicans and democrats to keep this legislation simple and to pass it as soon as possible. now when we look at health care there are certainly some good as expects of this law. the coverage of pre-existing conditions, for one that should be strongly considered. going forward there is also keeping children on your insurance until they're 26. but there's a lot, plenty, that needs to be corrected. and we need to put a better system in place. i firm pli believe that affordab
