vernon was born in 1971 to his mom barbara alston and vernon alston sr. he was born in a town in italy where his dad, vernon srntion ss stationed in the u.s. air force. he spent the first ten years of his life knitly before his father was transferred to dover air force in dover, delaware. there he attended a grade school on the air force base and graduated from dover high school. he went on to attend howard university here in washington, d.c., and graduated from here about 20 years ago in 1995. vernon was still a student at howard university when he answered the call of duty, following in the stoopfollowingf his dad and grandfather who had been a world war ii veteran. in 98 191991 diswroin joined tht reserve. after graduating from college in 1995, vernon joined the district of columbia's army national guard and he served as a member of the army national guard for another ten years. i'm sure our presiding officer spends time with his troops in his home state. we have army guard and air guard in delaware. we have thousands of men and women who serve our cou

before dawn on february 22, 797, the slave chef made his break for freedom from mount vernon. interestingly enough, hercules chose josh washington's 65th birthday as the day of his escape, perhaps hoping that the festivities going on around the president's celebration would massing his disappearance or perhaps thinking anyone who saw him out on the open roads would assume the well known chef was simply out to procure an item for washington's party. regardless of the reasoning, hercules' plan was successingful. he simply vanished with no one the wiser. there has not been found any evidence of a manhunt or even an acknowledgment of hercules' departure for at least four days. a february 25th, 1797 weekly farm report discovered recently by mount vernon historian mary b. thompson simply says herb lease ab sonned four days ago. maybe he was going out to get something to bake that birthday cake. [laughter] so this is what life was really like when people were trying to write a book saying that george washington's slaves were happy to be there and glad to be baking him a birthday cake

the shooting happened on mount vernon avenue... just after 8 p-m. one of the victims... a doctor at danville regional medical center... remains hospitalized tonight. the other man was treated and released. w-s-l-s ten's colter anstaett has been following this case... and has more on the investigation. on cam police say both shootings happened within a block of where i'm standing now at the intersection of mt. vernon avenue and virginia avenue. police say the first shooting happened at about 7:08 p.m. last night in the 200 block of mt. vernon avenue as a result of what they are calling an attempted robbery. vo year old dr. randolph neal was shot several times. on cam after that, police say the suspect or suspects ran down the 100 block of virginia vo that's where police saya homeowner whop lives on virginia avenue came out of their home to see what all the comotion was about and at that point one of the suspects noticed the homeowner come out of their home, fired a shot at that homeowner and the homeowner was consequently hit. both the homeowner and dr. neal were taken to
