vernon: a number of reasons. one is, i think we put much more emphasis on science, math and how important that is, the stem discipline, when in a democracy i think it is critical that in fact people are educated as citizens which is what we do as historians. what used to be known as civics in high school that people do just do not understand particularly laws that have come about since 1955. why they're necessary and how they are enacted. host: peyton mccrary mentioned this 1966 case, the spring court upheld the voting rights act. was this the first challenge -- the supreme court upheld the voting rights act. how have the cases evolved over the years? peyton: south carolina challenge it. it's relevant to what has been happening lately because the court did uphold the law. they were saying they were being treated unfairly, particular in the -- i like to use the quote that chief justice warned use that said "history called up south carolina and the other states that have joined in ashley cit -- actually cited some

there were more black people in mount vernon than portsmith. when i realized she went to portsmith i was like why portsmi portsmith? then i realized she could not geographic -- go to new york and perhaps the same was true of boston. she didn't know where she was going and it is likely the free black people didn't tell her for fear of problems and she would tell the plan. she doesn't know where he is going until she disembarks. once she gets to new hampshire, she finds a free black community who harbors her and gives her housing, food and helps her find work and really keeps her safe. every time one of washington's agents or family members came after her they always sheltered, harbored and hid her. i think the other part of what this book does is show the importance of the free black community in the end of the early 18th and 19th century. >> a few years ago i read a wonderful children's book to my daughter about judge. were you part of that project? >> no, i know the author. if it was dianne turner she has written a children's book. i wasn't a

we know that he was from mount vernon. he had a plantation. but i wasn't aware before i came and worked at the historical society that he brought his slaves up here. pennsylvania had a law if your slaves were in pennsylvania, because pennsylvania was a free state, that after six months your slaves would automatically be emancipated. george washington would rotate the slaves back to washington every six months to avoid the law. it wasn't illegal what they did, but they did that to avoid their slaves being emancipated. when they found the remains of the president's house, you had two groups. you had one group that wanted it to just be george washington lived here, isn't that wonderful. and then you have another group that says we really want to tell the story of the enslaved people who lived here as well. it was very contentious a few years ago. they came up with a compromise. as a tour guide, i'm really happy and as a historian i'm happy because that site tells both stories. it tells the story of that being our first white house, if you will, b
