you came to mount vernon and worked on this book. i know you worked hard on it a cause years, a culmination in a lot of ways the work you've been doing on 18th century native american history. what you want people to take away from this pairing of george washington and a story of native americans across many decades of the 18th century? why did you write this book? >> thank you, kevin. good evening, everybody. i've actually coming to you from vermont where i live and where it snowed on saturday. >> wow. >> but this probably is not the audience to make this confession do, but i never really was intending to write a book about george washington. i spend my life studying native american history and one of the things that i and people like me have always struggled with is a question of how do you get american indians into american history in a meaningful way? it struck me that george washington was up perfect vehicle to do that. maybe the most famous person in american history, the founding father. if i could show that native americans m

>> at mount vernon they didn't get along it all. mary and martha didn't really like each other. . . . . converg and charming. she has things to say and was a very utilitarian kind of person and i think that she represented many values martha have trouble with like frugality. martha was very lavish and so was george. although she asked for little bits of money from george, she didn't do that and didn't dress up and worship the high life. she didn't enjoy whatever remaining control mary had over her son. >> thank you. it's interesting they are different generations. those generations really really mattered in that period in virginia. okay, so here's a question a bunch of people have asked about why she didn't remarry but do we know about her ever considering remarriage, did she ever have any other suitors? >> there's no evidence of any other suitors whatsoever. the desperate evidence that she did have a reputation. >> go ahead. >> there was some discussion of a doctor that visited a lot. but nobody actually knows. >> someone asked a q

i thought it was maybe, vernon the most important part of the president's speech. right before that he said that our children are being taught in school to hate our country. and that the men and women fought so hard to build and sacrifice not heroes but villains. what was your take? >> first of all, i think this president has a message and went to somewhere this particular park that nobody has done an event like this in recent times that i know of. but he had a message of protecting monuments. protecting history but making sure our children are properly educated on these monuments, the history of these monuments because, in order to maintain and protect and preserve america, we have to be able to think about the past, learn from the past so we can go forward.

it comes out in this little vignette of a congressman's visit to mount vernon. but the bigger story of memorializing george washington at this time is told in a wonderful book about the efforts to bury washington in the capital building. so they make it from gatsby's tavern in alexandria. they arrive in mount vernon on the second of january, the day after new year's. cutler writes to his daughter again, a servant conducted us to madam washington's room, where we were received in a very cordial manner. misses washington appeared as much rejoiced to receiving our visit as if he had been of her nearest connections. we were all federalists, which evidently gave her great pleasure. her remarks were frequently pointed and sometimes very sarcastic on the new order of president'she administration. she spoke of the election of mr. jefferson, who she considered one of the most detestable of mankind as the greatest misfortune our country had ever experienced. her unfriendly feelings toward him were to be expected after the abuse he offered to general washington while livin

that is a quote from vernon jones out of georgia.ely i agree with him completely. he is not the only one. we're seeing other democrats step forward to say this as well. joe biden trying to hold the line on the position until earlier today we absolutely start talking about defunding police and cutting budgets and so forth. this will be a very dividing issue in our election coming up. i think democrats are missing the boat here. the fact there are the occasional excess, which as a civil rights lawyer i fought against the authorities and sued police in some cases does not mean you throw the baby out with the bath water. what you're seeing in states like california and other liberal jurisdictions talking about the defunding police. seeing a lot of moving trucks in streets of san francisco and los angeles. people are concerned about their safety and security. these states don't allow us to have concealed carry on weapons on our person for our security. so ultimately i think this is going to end up with flight from these liberal jurisdicti

he is saying, vernon jones, a democrat out of georgia saying they were tough on black people, incarcerated a lot of black people. he has a joe biden is trying to sweep his legacy there under the rug. how do you think this will play out in the election? >> well, i think he is absolutely correct about that. we are seeing a repeat of the hillary clinton campaign. biden, over the years has had some controversial and racist things to say about communities. the african-american community. kamala harris called them out during one of the democratic debates about his position on bunting. i think he has really been very situational in the position on these criminal justice issues. it is really all about polls. what he thinks he needs to say about getting integrity. it's not about as real viewpoints on issues. we think joe biden would be in favor of defunding the police to guard him or taking away his personal security or taking away the security that guards his

one story, i'll always remember is reverend vernon john's daughter, reverend vernon john proceedededluther king jr. as pastor at baptist church and one of the dr. kinlg's mentors and a great, great civil rights leader. well, his daughter lived -- her name was toni anderson. she passed away about a year ago. she had never met john lewis. and john knew reverend vernon johns. so one day toni came to washington, d.c. and i called john and knowing how busy he was, i didn't expect him to see her right away he said, oh no, bring her over here right now, right now. i took toni to his office and let me tell you, fredericka. i sat down and i listened to them both talk for about an hour. >> wow. >> about the movement, about her father, about his interaction with her father and dr. king and it was just like a wonderful moment that i will always remember. it just -- the time of sensitivity he had and the love he had to want to meet vernon john's daughter. >> wonderful. the compassion that you're describing -- yeah. he was just a compassionate man with a huge heart and really generous. obviously b

let's welcome georgia democrat vernon jones. he is a state representative out of georgia. he is also a member of black voices for trump 2020. your reaction to the president just now? he really dismantled the biden campaign, that biden is being taken over by the hard left. democrat platform the likes we've never seen before. it has now been radicalized. he basically also saying they want to border patrol, abolish i.c.e., really undercut law enforcement and police. what is your reaction to what the president is just saying just now? >> that is why i'm voting for this president because this president is about results. he made campaign promises, he met those promise, he met those commitments. unlike democrats they want to see the economy fail. they want to see our borders overcrowded without any rules or regulations. they want to see the police attacked. they ban to see protests. they want to defund the police departments and police agencies. the president is the only law that we have between the democrats and anarchy.

pete: democrat turned trump supporter vernon jones joins us in atlanta and he joins us now. thank you very much, representative, for being on the program. you are from georgia. you are -- have been around, maybe know the mayor. you let me know. what do you think of this potential pick? >> well, first of all, i would love for joe biden to pick a black female. i don't believe he will. primarily because he thinks the black voters are a captive audience. because is he a democrat, he believes they will vote for him still and if they don't vote for him, well, i guess they ain't black. pete: that's true he said that how much of what he said in the past. the actions he takes. not improved for black americans. how much of that relate is part of the consideration here. first of all joe has a dream president trump has a record. joe has a dream if you elect me i will help black people and change their communities. well, he has been there for 49 years and he hasn't done it.

[laughter] it is just hard to imagine how his voice would echo off of every wall. now that there hasn't been another time in history where one man has been so influential at the beginning of the administration the way madison was the beginning of washington. >> talk about the constitutional convention. there were battles and it took a long time many hours and days of work to put it together. >> it was the same that we all learned in the same history books. of course the big states wanted to be represented proportionate according to population the small state wanted different. madison always out there should be proportional representation across the board. he went to the constitutional convention thinking the great threat to the public were the states because they were so irresponsible under the confederation, repressing religious freedom b

the book that george washington bought leaving the constitutional convention to go back to mount vernon what did he buy for his reading pleasure? >> the "game of thrones" at the time. the hottest thing going. he spends four months in philadelphia they nailed the window shut to keep it secret and in a particularly hot summer. can you imagine now with the heavy clothing in a room with no air for months and there and then at the end he signs a document and advise the books and on its way back to mount vernon. it is an extraordinary thing they were doing they were so fearful of the monarchy be at creating something with an executive to hold his power and it was such a gamble. basically washington believed in the stream. proportionally for washington he picked her a dream. >> so now let's talk about this book. when did you first get the idea for this topic? >> [laughter] part of what we do we do a lot of reporting and writing and then how do we get a handle on this? picc line that sets the stage wondering if i leaned a little too much on that story. that's why said i had to think it through

then mount vernon acquired it. so most historians didn't even know until 2012. and the notations are rare because washington wasn't a scribbler in his book like adams and jefferson. so you could actually see it if you go to mount vernon and i've done an article on this as well so if you are interested in that i could share it because it is a fascinating document. >> we don't have much record of what he thought during the convention because he didn't speak very many times during the constitutional convention, correct? >> he only spoke once at the very end. and he preferred to listen during the actual debates. but it's also important to note two things. one, he was there every day and he voted with the virginia delegation. so people knew how he was voting in his opinion was powerful. second is after the end of each session, a lot of the delegates would go to dinner. they would go listen to music. they would go to the theater. they were divisive focal philadelphia families. so, they were socializing together almost every day. and you can do it tha but they e talkin
