joining us is veronica escobar. thank you for being here. is there any reason this morning for any of us to think that this time will be different, this time congress would do something to stop the epidemic of mass shootings and gun violence? >> good morning. i first want to say, my heart goes out to everyone in boulder and in colorado because this is not the first horrible, violent attack on their community. and so they've lived through a lot. you know, in the congress, the house of representatives last week, for the second time, we passed two important initial pieces on gun violence prevention. the problem is in the senate. even with the slim majority, because of the filibuster, it's going to be very, very difficult to get anything done. the filibuster to many of us is a tool, an instrument for government gridlock. and we need action and we need it right away. >> so what are you calling for

democratic congresswoman veronica escobar of texas.esswoman, you live in a city on the border, the largest binational community in the western hemisphere if i'm not mistaken. between el paso and juarez. let's start with this. my understanding is that through a combination of a variety of policies the trump administration had effectively shut the southern border to any asylum seekers through both covid protocols and then this remain in mexico program, which they kept expanding, which essentially sort of took the border and pushed it back into mexico. and it said you have to stop here before you even get to the border, before you can make an asylum claim. and between those two things, like before the biden administration came in they had essentially locked down the border even though they never announced it as such. is that an accurate characterization? >> hi, chris. so great to be on your show. yes, it is an accurate characterization. not only was the border effectively shut down in many respects to unlawful entry, but it was also shut

over twitter from some of the responses, there wasn't a lot of media present, but we heard from veronica escobar that as she toured the facility she felt the biden administration had improved some of the facilities that these children were in but said it is still an unacceptable and heartbreaking situation. that comes on top of two separate lawmaker trips. we saw congressman joakim castro bring a group of democratic lawmakers to tour things there. he essentially blamed it onto the trump administration, the former trump administration for what the biden administration has now inlettered in this administration for how they are handling asylum seekers and the migrant children. and ted cruz and john cornyn go to a separate cbp facility. there are reportedly overwhelming numbers of migrant children being held at the facility. the republicans are putting all of the onus onto the democrats and the biden administration for the situation they say they are witnessing firsthand. we heard a little bit from congressman joakim castro talking about the discrepancies between these kinds of facilities. >> the cb
