veronica johnson joins us for the forecast. >> yeah, i heard erica say earlier when we were waiting for a shot that she was getting cold. that's all it takes is standing outside for more than a couple minutes with the temperatures in the 30s. while we are at 37 degrees, there's a lot of locations looking at cooler conditions. 36 currently in gaitersberg, and holding at 30 in manassas. 10 to 18 degrees lower than yesterday. it has been more than a week since we have seen our numbers so low. satellite and radar, no rain to talk about, but the clouds have moved back into the area, and well off to the west. there are a few sprinkles right now in west virginia, but mostly cloudy for the bulk of the day. the temperatures range from 41 to 43. 46 degrees expected in fredericksburg, virginia. so by the time we get into the overnight period, i think the clouds may be producing a few sprinkles around this area, 8:00, 9:00, 10:00, but will not amount to anything that we have to worry about. the cold that is coming, some folks may want to worry or plan ahead. we will talk about what will be coming t

our meteorologist veronica johnson is here to tell us about the winter heading our way. we've enjoyed nice weather but today a little cooler than it has been. right? >>> today cooler because of the wind, but i think, before we complain about this morning's chilly wind, know that tomorrow morning this time, guys, there's going to be some 20 to 25 degrees lower, the temperatures. so let's not complain. we're going to start out in the 20s tomorrow. 44 is where we are right now. we've got a west wind at 15 miles per hour. the system long gone that brought the rain, but still some snow wrapping behind to areas of west virginia. it's still snowing there. we got a chance to clear out. you can see there. but the clouds still coming through the area. today we're talking about chilly sunshine. all in all, though, for us, we're not going to have any major weather systems. the next couple of days, we'll get up to a high of 45 degrees today. a couple of weak systems, you can see, will bring some cloud cover to the area thursday and friday. your high for thursday, 48, for friday, 55.

our meteorologist veronica johnson's in with more. veronica, good morning. >> good morning.at's right. you have to be committed, and that's one thing for sure we are. we're committed to this weekend's weather because it's going to be awfully nice for getting outdoors, maybe doing some of your last raking of those leaves that have been around your house that you keep looking at and going, okay, i'm eventually going to get to that. before the cold sets in, you'll want to get to it. it was cold enough to the upper reaches of the atmosphere yesterday to squeeze out with just enough vigor that little disturbance that came through to squeeze out a little bit of snow. 12:30 to 4:00 yesterday, the counties just north of us. frederick county, loudoun county, and washington county had a little bit of some snow. enough to notice and take some pictures and get folks talking. across the area now, we are dry and quiet. look at ohio just west of cleveland, east of cincinnati, ohio. there is some showers out there. that's what's going to be headed this way late tonight. that weather system,

meteorologist veronica johnson is going to join us in just a moment to tell us about this real winter that is settling in. good morning to you. >> welcome to news 4 today on this thursday, december 29th. we begin with breaking news out of silver spring where university boulevard is shut down right now because of a deadly car accident.. it happened after 3:00 this morning at the intersection of university and herring drive. only one car was involved in the accident. we're told three women were in the car. two of them have died. we have a crew on the scene and we'll bring you a live report, coming up later. >>> all lanes of rothville pike are open at this hour after a deadly accident shut down the busy roadway for hours. the accident happened during rush hour just short of the beltway. police say a pickup truck heading south jumped the median and headed right at the bus. the bus driver swerved to avoid it. the accident left the bus driver trapped. rescue crews had to use pry bars to free her. she was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. passengers watched helplessly as the whol

. >> veronica johnson is in the weather center with details. veronica? >> a big drop from not only where we were yesterday at this time, but a big difference from where we were shortly after midnight. temperatures didn't start dropping until the early, early morning hours. in the 60s late last night, early this morning. 64 in manassas and culpeper. now, 15 to 20 degrees cooler. on top of that, we have cloud cover and light shower that is are falling across southern portions of the viewing area. 44 with 45% humidity. a lot of moisture in the air. if you are not getting the rain, it feels humid out there. fredericksburg getting the rain. most of the area is dry. quantico, virginia, richmond area, all that through the northern neck where the rain is making its way from southwest, east and northeastward sliding through. evening showers are going to be around for awhile. in the 40s now. 46 in fredericksburg. not much of a temperature range throughout the area. boy oh boy, it is going to dip down tonight. the showers sticking around until 9:00 and 11:00 p.m. w

storm 4 meteorologist veronica johnson has more on the weather from the storm center. hi, veronica. >> that's right, we are. a little rain out there to go along with the mild temperatures today. it was kind of spring-like. i don't know, that may be pushing it. the numbers were way up today. here is a look at the temperatures today. d.c., foggy bottom, the high 63 degrees. falls church, 64. up to 66 in culpeper. 68 today in fredericksburg. those kind of temperatures are more like late november and early november around here. we dropped five degrees. we are at 58 degrees. well above the average, still. we are going to stay high for much of the evening and overnight. the rain that's out there is moving out of here in the next two to three hours. some very light showers around bowie and waldorf around areas around waldorf. the rain moving out of here. the clouds, that's not going to move out of here. those are sticking around. mostly cloudy at 11:00 p.m. the temperature at 11:00 p.m., 53 degrees. that's a very mild evening. a mild overnight coming our way. light showers out

. >> storm 4 meteorologist veronica johnson has the details. so veronica, it's been chilly today. what's coming up? >> it's been pretty chilly today, but did you like the sunshine? guys, a lot of tweets i've been reading today. folks saying they love today. the fact i can get by without a coat. that is nice because it's winter, right? it's winter. you're going out to get the tree. well, you expect to be all bundled up. we're doing just fine today. we talked about those winds out on the west coast, the santa ana winds. i saw an official report overnight. a wind gust of 167 miles per hour. those winds out west, at least for today, really calming down as you've heard. let's talk about what's happening with that weather system. it's making its way eastward. for us, though, today awfully, awfully quiet. you can see some high clouds. we remain in the clear here. that means that we've got a clear night coming our way. 54 degrees is where we are right now after a great friday evening. it's going to be chilly here. temperatures will be dropping from the 50s down to the 40s. we're at 54 deg

veronica johnson has the first word on the weather. >> it is gloomy right now for most of the afternoon we have been looking at the forecast. some of the latest guidance and seeing what the chances are of getting snow here. it's looking good for late wednesday night and thursday morning in some neighborhoods. today no cold for us. 57 degrees. in fact this 57-degree temperature we have been fluctuating near there since 2:00 a.m. this morning. we have been umbrella ready all day. take a look here on storm 4 doppler. you can see the rain moving through from southwest to northeast. occasionallyhere has been moderate rain. but for right now we have mainly light showers across the area. heavier ray down to the south around fredericksburg, virginia. that is what will be moving northeastward this evening. we are talking about a wet evening and a soggy day tomorrow. when the cold air moves in wednesday night some snow and right now there is a winter storm watch up for those counties shaded in light blue west of winchester and stanton. petersburg 2 to 3 inches could fall and 6 inches on the weste

>> well, meteorologist veronica johnson is joining us live from storm center 4. she's going to tell us what's out there for us. i have a feeling it's nothing. >> nothing like that. wind around here is very, very light. in fact, that's going to allow us to have a very clear and cold night with the temperatures really radiating back out into space. we were talking the santa ana winds. i wanted to lay out on the west coast for you to show you how much real estate is covered by the powerful winds. california, nevada, utah, colorado, new mexico and arizona. these are some of the highest wind gusts i have seen reported today. they are around that area with fierce winds. whittaker peak summit, 97-mile-per-hour gust reported earlier today. those are the strong offshore winds. a huge area of high pressure in the pacific northwest. for us, again, a light wind out of the northwest at 8 miles per hour. we have had seasonably cool conditions today. we have had sunshine around. the high temperature, still on par with where we were yesterday, around 50 degrees or so. satellite

storm 4 meteorologist here, veronica johnson. terrific day today. just got an e-mail from a viewer named mickey. she says, can you keep the sunshine coming? we are going to keep the sunshine around for part of the weekend. 54 degrees right now. a clear sky. a very nice evening because the wind is just so still. don't have any windchill temperatures to talk about. down tonight to 40 degrees. tomorrow morning, on the cold side. anywhere between 25 and 35 degrees in d.c. sun's up tomorrow at 7:09. a cold start to the day, but then we bounce back. we'll hit a high tomorrow of about 50 to 51 degrees. 48 for you folks up north. great for saturday. some clouds will start rolling in on sunday. right now it looks as though it will be partly cloudy for the big game. 1:00 kickoff. 50 to 53 degrees. again, partly cloudy with a light wind around the area. most of us can hang around in our sweats, right? great weekend. early part of next week, warmth again. 58 on monday. 60 on tuesday. there's that rain for tuesday. it sticks around yet another day on wednesday.

veronica johnson is live in arlington this morning to talk about the share the warmth coat drive. hi. >> reporter: that's right. i have been out here all morning long. folks have been dropping off their gently worn coats. we have gotten so many of them and hope to get more of them today, and as long as the coat drive is going on, we will be collecting up to december 23rd at most locations. and this is one big effort going on in the community, barbara, because as you know, there are so many people in need, and so many people that don't have a good coat to get through the cold. a lot of times, they could be people living down the street from you and in some instances, kids. we have the nurses of georgetown hospital, and the salvation army, and of course, right there, at nbc 4, we have a big phone bank that is set up, so you know, if you have a question about this, and you are unsure, maybe you want to give to the salvation army in a different way, go ahead and call in and we will get all of your questions answers. standing here and also waiting out in the cold is terry cole, vice pr
