. >> veronica johnson is here to tell us how long the rain will last. >> this is the first wave of this big system that as you know, storm team 4 has been monitoring for the last couple days. what we are getting here with the first round is nothing more than rain. let me zoom into the area. it's just pretty much light showers for the most part throughout gaithersburg. fairfax, manassas and bowie. it's what's coming in over the next couple hours. the rain and intensity is going to step up and pick up. all as we chill down from upper 50s to 60 degrees. we are at 47 degrees in d.c. look at the cooldown. close to the 30s now. folks in hagerstown, 39 degrees in cumberland, maryland. all this as we get ready for round two. we have more rain for the overnight. then we have the snow and ice that is going to step into the area. the snow and ice, already unfolding over the nation's midsection and ohio valley. reducing quite a bit of ice. when i return in a couple minutes, who is under a winter storm watch. later, what we are going to pick up in terms of how much snowfall and how much ice. that's

. >> storm team 4 meteorologist veronica johnson is tracking warmer temperatures and rain coming over the weekend. hey, v.j. >> hey, guys. a lot of folks are going to like the warm up. today was an interesting day. we have winter and we have a little bit of, not winter. temperatures got into the mid-40s today. look at what came through the area later this morning. watch the radar loop here on storm team 4 radar. storm showers came through. it was enough to witen the ground and some of the neighborhood roads up across northern montgomery county, howard county, frederick, baltimore and up to the north and east. yesterday's high temperature was 33 degrees. today, we have gotten into the low and mid-40s in many neighborhoods. that trend now, oh, it's going to feel better. cold, yeah. mild, that's what we are going to see as we climb into and through the weekend. then, it's a big dive again as we head right into 2014. i have the details on that in a couple minutes. >>> a massive ice storm that caused hundreds of thousands of power outages from michigan to maine. thousands are still in the

meteorologist veronica johnson here to break down the timing of it all. vj? >> that's right, guys. it could slow some of us down early tomorrow morning. i've been taking a look at the latest visibilities coming in. they're under two miles now in ocean city. salisbury, right out a mile. everywhere else here throughout our area somewhere between 7 and 10 miles. but as we get into the overnight period, i think there will be some more pockets of fog setting up. and that means possible travel delays for tomorrow morning. here are the areas that i'm looking at. annapolis, waldorf forward fredericksburg, and leonardtown where pockets of fog are getting thick for tomorrow morning. the other big story, the warmup. i'll show you which day is going to feel like early november coming up in just a couple minutes. >> thanks, veronica. >>> a lot of teachers in our area's largest school district say they're overworked and underpaid. news4 got an early look at a survey of 1,400 teachers in fairfax county. when asked what they would do if their salaries didn't go up next year, 42% said they would ke

veronica johnson is tracking it all. that's right. we have a lot of changes that we're going through in the weather. outside today, well, we've got an overcast sky across the area. it stretches far and wide. let's take a look. our temperatures today under the overcast sky. as we look right over the potomac, temperatures today in the 50s across the area. even 60 degrees for you folks around fredricksburg. stafford at 57 today. 57 around waldorf, maryland. but tomorrow temperatures will be going way up. probably get freakishly mild before another cold blast moves in. that's your thursday. all this as we track a big storm that will be setting up a large area of icy conditions through the nation's midsection and then eventually here. i'll tell you which areas and when in a couple of majorities. >>> d.c. police are identifying the man shot and killed by officers in the trinidad neighborhood last night. his name is darius murphy and he's 19 years old. both the officer and murphy went to the hospital where murphy later died. the officer was

. >> veronica johnson is in the weather center. we did warm up a bit though, didn't we? >> we did. it's the trend for the rest of the workweek. for back to work and back to school today, i have been monitoring the cloud cover across the area. a bit of a downer today with all that gray sky across the area. take a look at the live cam and the woodrow wilson bridge. nothing but gray. how much we are socked in. from maryland through d.c. and down through virginia, cloud cover across the area. have to go all the way to virginia to see clear skies. all this with a bit of a light wind out of the northeast across the area. as we take a look at our temperatures right now, some of our warmer spots down to the south. fredericksburg at 49 degrees. cool at 45 right near the water at annapolis, maryland. close to 50 degrees, mild but again, the trend is for the temperatures to go up. as we take a look at the forecast for the evening, we drop to 41 degrees. notice the fog that will be forming. i'll show you those locations that i think might have travel troubles early tomorrow morning with the fo

. >> meteorologist veronica johnson is here to break it down for us. v.j.? >> it moves in for us it's a minor impact. for some, minor impact on area roads. we are going to look at the advisory that is came in today. the counties shaded in purple, winter weather advisory. this area will see some snow tomorrow. it's montgomery county, howard county, northern fauquier to frederick county through page county and warren county. these are the counties, again, in purple, to the north of d.c. some snow. it's 8:00 a.m. saturday to 1:00 a.m. sunday. for these counties behind me in bright pink that border pennsylvania. this is where the snow will come down and accumulate and where there could be issues on area roads by late saturday, early sunday morning. you can see the radar is quiet across the area, scanning the area. nothing falling from the skies but the temperatures will be dropping from 25 degrees from the north. to 25 degrees in manassas and 66. snow develops early between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. rain for many. when i return, i'll give you a time line when the syst

veronica johnson will be in at 4:00 followed by doug at 5:00 and 6:00. continuing to update these numbers. this is an evolving system on monday. here's what storm team 4 is thinking. the d.c. metro could see a dusting to an inch of snow. there is back to the west a dusting to two inches. snow then changes over to freezing rain. minor icing is possible in washington, articling and through fairfax and northern prince georges and southern montgomery county. significant icing is possible into sunday night in areas like loudoun and northern prince willm portions of montgomery and frederick through washington county. this icing could cause power outages and bringing down limbs and trees and like i said, we will be updating this evolving system later today. a good idea not to download the weather ap, but follow the meteorologists on twitter as we head into the weekend. next time you see me, we will look at the next seven days. >> sounds like it's really raining. a heads up with track work on all lines. the arlington station closes tonight at 10 and stays closed

veronica johnson is in the storm center. we are talking about the storm making its way through here. if you are traveling sunday morning, we are starting with snow and ice. it's a very dangerous combination. >> snow that could accumulate before the ice accumulates on top of it. this is a storm system that is one of the worst in quite some time. you can see it unfolding right now. doug mentioned the snow showing up in white around st. louis, missouri and areas of oklahoma. then icy conditions coming into spots like ohio. that's what will be moving this way the second half of the weekend. that ice with the cold air. we are going to have first is rain. you can see the weather front late this evening into areas of western pennsylvania. look at the moisture advancing ahead of it. by tomorrow morning, in fact after 3:00 a.m., we have a chance to see, the best chance of rain around the area. that means a wet morning rush but our heaviest rain comes during the evening rush. maybe a few pesky, showers tomorrow. most of it in the afte

veronica johnson will be in at 4:00, 5:00 and 6:00 continuing to track the system and updating the forecast. a temperature of 44 with mostly cloudy skies and tuesday we are looking at a cloud and sun mix and a temperature of 35. let's take a closer look at the all important forecast. the good news right now, we are not worried about rain or snow. i think the biggest concern will be how chilly it will be. 9:00 new year's eve night, a temperature right around freezing. midnight as we bring in 2014. we are looking at a temperature of about 30. it will be cold and recommend bundling up if you plan on bringing in the new year outside. gloves, hat, scarf and a jacket. 2:00 a.m. as they wrap up will be in the upper 20s. for new year's day, a temperature of 40. not bad, but clouds around. quiet weather pattern this afternoon and it will be nice outside. it looks like our next chance of rain again will come on sunday and the chance of rain on sunday looking likely. today, tomorrow, and saturday, people have off and not a dad day to go skiing. >> if you want to do the returns and the shopping between

. >> veronica johnson has the latest from the storm center. >> i'm tracking it all. we have a couple things that we are going to have to warry about. the temperatures this time tomorrow, you are going to be uncomfortable. the mercury is going to drop. the other thing we are dealing with, folks, a lot of rain moving in. winter type weather for the weekend. that weather, i know, it's early. it includes snow that could accumulate and includes ice that could accumulate. we are looking at freezing rain and sleet around the area. temperatures right now, they are comfortable. mid-60s, most locations. with high that is topped out around 66 and 67 degrees in college park, rockville, maryland, gaithersburg, 65-66. it's more like late october type conditions. it's still going to be mild early tomorrow morning. likely to be able to get by. leave the house with a light jacket tomorrow. the warmest time of the day, in fact, will be early on. then we have showers to deal with, too, for the morning rush. it's going to be nasty and need the umbrella, not just for the morning but thro

we begin with storm team 4 meteorologist veronica johnson. >> bitter cold for sure. we're not just talking subfreezing temperatures, but subfreezing temperatures. we're going way down tonight. take a look across the area right now, getting a little bit of melting throughout the area. we did get sunshine. this system blew in here and out of here very quickly. these are the area where snow did fall. you can see pretty much along just east and back to the west of i-95. big winners to the north and wes west. snow melting has taken place today. i don't think we'll see a lot over the next two days with the cold. at least there's nothing falling right now. quiet on the radar. temperatures currently at 34 degrees, culpepper coming in at 37 degrees right now. with the sunshine helping us out a little bit on area roads, it's the secondary roads that we have to worry about as temperatures drop, look at this, from 13 degrees in frederick to 22 degrees in d.c. folks, that means, again, some serious issues on area roads. icy patches with the refreeze. just when we get a chance to

veronica johnson and i have been looking at totals throughout the afternoon. it's the western suburbs that have seen the most. >> we put together this snowfall map for you showing where some of the highest snowfall totals were today in shades of blue for you. you can pretty much see where the temperature was lower, and that was everywhere west of i-95, freezing and below freezing with snowfall totals coming in around three and four inches. damascus, 3.3, frederick 4, leesburg 3. you get closer to that line, alexandria, only an 1.5. gore, virginia, five inches fell there. the next step, of course, the big melting that took place today. this could be wild before we see melting. metro locations down to 22 degrees. in the suburbs temperatures will be even lower tonight, folks. those locations will be dropping down into the teens. the suburbs, somewhere between about 11 and 15 degrees. that means refreeze, a hard freeze and serious trouble on area roads for tomorrow morning. doug? >> that's right, veronica. this is a storm that affected not only our area, but balti
