nbc washington meteorologist veronica johnson is here this morning and watching our weather in more ways than one, especially with what is happening. >> look at the area all morning long down in the indian ocean. as you know, it is a very, very large area. third world's largest ocean. right now that debris field is closer to australia than it is to africa. i say that because there are strong westerly winds down there. the wind blows from west to east. so i think that with the stronger winds coming up, right now at 25 miles per hour, expected to increase, we'll see that debris field shift closer to australia. but as they go looking for clues, i really think that they're going to be closer to africa than where they are right now. so that is something that they will be watching and taking a look at very closely. let's look at our weather now and see what is happening across the country. hello, last day of winter, that's what i'm seeing. across the country, snow left lingering here around areas of maine and through new hampshire and vermont. 8 to 10 inches expected by the end of today. that

veronica johnson is following this situation. of house these scientists are working. >> sure, they're really not just looking at the surface winds, but the wave heights more importantly what the forecast will be for not just the next 24, but 36 they could catch a break tomorrow. here the winds off the coast of australia, way over here africa. these are the westerly winds on the very southern side of the indians ocean. and that's the strong westerly winds here that it's my belief that has taken that debris field and put it closer to australia. let's look at the wave heights. the wave heights today have been at around ten feet. a look at the forecast, advancing it not just through the weekend, but into the early part of next week, the wave heights are expected to go up to about 16 to 20 feet. of course that could really hinder and slow down the efforts in the indian ocean. here's a look at the wave heights there are areas shaded in orange. that's where they are expected to be the strongest. more importantly ifz an infrared/satellit

storm team4 meteorologist tom kierein begins our coverage, along with meteorologist veronica johnson in the weather center. hi, guys. >> hello. >> when i got up at midnight, it was raining. when i drove in around 1:00 a.m., it was sleeting. when i got here, it was snowing. since about 3:00, 4:00 this morning it's been snowing, much of the region, metro, anyway. >> and on top of that, the temperatures have dropped more than 10 degrees since early this morning, since we're telling folks, a, since it's gotten cold out there now, now is still the time to clean up. this is the type of snow you can push. you don't have to lift it. >> yeah, push-broom, a good idea. storm team4 radar. it's not done yet. there's still quite a band of snow in kentucky and southern west virginia. that's yet to pass south of the metro area. for areas north and west of washington, it's mostly over. just a few lingering bands of light snow in montgomery, howard county, and in frederick county, washington, panhandle of west virginia. so the totals you've had there so far, that's pretty much it. farther to our west,

to get a detailed answer i'm joined by nbc meteorologist veronica johnson. thank you so much for coming in to explain this. >> sure. >> this is not an image i could make sense of myself. what are the conditions and do you expect them hold sng. >> this that area there's a whole lot the clouds and still a lot of rain. at the same time you have the big wave heights that were occurring a few hours ago around 10 feet. now, as i said, underneath the clouds, a lot of rain close to the debris field. here's the coast of australia and here's the coast of africa. in between, huge area of the indian ocean, that clouds are expected to get closer to australia but more away from the debris field. that will give them a window of opportunity tomorrow to get out there, even if that means going around a cluster of storms or heavy rain. they should be able to make their way around that and get close to the debris field and make sense of what's going on there. >> how much do you think the progress that can be made on the search is dependent on the vagueries of weather? >> it's h

first we want to check on your weather with nbc meteorologist veronica johnson.i know this area is of concern to you as you're watching the weather indicators and what it could mean to the shifting water patterns. >> that's right. just to the north of this impact field, there's an old area of low pressure. so the circulation right there where we're searching now has more westerly winds. it is quite possible that off to the west of that area is where whatever that was came in or has been drifting from further off to the west. so the winds down there are very strong. you've got westerlies there on the north side of the i'm fact field more out of the east. again, circulation right there. the other thing is the visibility. that's what they'll really have to contend with, the visibility and wave heights. they're at about ten feet now. expected to increase to 16 to 20 feet for the end of the week and beginning of next week. that would mean low visibility continues. right now it's down below a half mile, thomas. >> real quickly, back here at home domestically, surprise,

and join g ing us is meteorolog veronica johnson. >> well, a lot of folks ask why it is so hard weather-wiset it is a turbulent point on the planet, and it is where the atmosphere try to balance out with big temperature differences, and that creates a lot of wind. in is the area off of the coast of southwest australia right now, and we have two areas that we are monitor thing, and the conditions now in the forecast. we will look at it, easterly winds today, and 20 to the 25 miles per hour, but with the sunrise a little bit less than four hours away actually, they will increase the winds. we have sea swells around 10 feet, and likely to be higher on sunday. and then folks, for monday, tuesday and wednesday of next week, they will face some of the worst conditions probably that they have with the system, and that is because they have a cyclone that is forming just north of australia, and here we go, and you can see the big swirling clouds, and the clouds that are north of the site right now, and the massive swells off of the coast of indonesia, and that is where the cyclone is, and right now,

nbc washington meteorologist veronica johnson is joining me now with more on that story. >> the indianan area where storms can form very quickly and intensify very quickly. and that's exactly what we're seeing with this cyclone. it is now a severe tropical cyclone with its winds at 125 miles per hour. and look at this thing. how big it is. if you look closely, you can even see that there's an eye in it. the winds around that storm are clock wise, but you've got other erratic winds that are just to the west of this system, too. so as this system makes its trek to the south and southwest, that's what it's forecasted to do right now. it is going to be really churning things up. so that's the trek. look at the size of the storm. now, look at the investigation area. it's about the same size. so right now, tropical cyclone jillian is forecasted to move northwest of the investigation site. and dissipate. but what typically happens, alex, is that we see these storms as they dissipate the outer most bands of rain start to break off. and that's what could happen on tuesday and wednesday time per

let me go to meteorologist veronica johnson, and she joins me for that part of the story.the weather could be bad today? >> exactly. they have a lot of cloud cover down there. the other thing, of course, are the wave heights. the waves are about ten feet right now, pushing out of the southwest to the northeast, and they're expected to maybe decrease a bit. but then they'll be back up, i think, by the tail end of the weekend and early part of next week. so they'll have a short window tomorrow, i think, to operate and to get anything really accomplished. the other thing are just the overall winds, and those right now are at about 25 miles per hour. what i've done here is i've taken a look at the forecast for the area. we're talking about this area, of course, of the indian ocean. there's africa. there's australia. it's closest to the australian coast right now. the debris field. as i put this in motion, one of the things that you're going to notice very easily on this is that the winds are going from west to east. we've got two areas of high pressure down here in the souther

for more on that, head to meteorologist veronica johnson. hello again. talking about here? in our terms, i guess, cyclone, we talk in hurricane talk around here. what are we looking at here and how can it move things around out there? >> it would be the equivalent of a category 3 and a lot of wind even with the hurricanes we face. there's indonesia, australia. sizable storm, strong storm. look at the last image. watch it. because you will see more orange, more yellow. that is an indication that this cyclone, severe tropical cyclone julian is still strengthening. in fact, here we are. take a look at the storm. the size of it. circulation of it. this is an area in the indian ocean where the winds quarterback erratic. you take this storm system, you put it just north of the investigation site and facing some not so good conditions by the time they get to midweek. why? it is moving to the south and west and not moving very fast and should stay just to the north and west of the investigation site but it is about as large as the site that they have been going

joining us is nbc washington meteorologist veronica johnson, to talk about the weather's impact and whatuld be facing next. >> yeah, that's right, betty. this, of course, is an area of the ocean that is indeed very extreme. you've got chaos in the air, you've got chaos in the water. take a look at the latest satellite imagery here. this is the debris field we're looking at right now. to the north of there, this mass of white, those are clouds. and you can see which way the movement is, and the motion here on the loop. they're heading down toward the south. toward that debris field. so when the sun comes up at around 6:20, 6:30 on sunday, they're going to be in and out of some clouds and rain. here's the first debris field, about 1,500 miles southwest of perth, australia. now we've got that other one that's 7 4 miles just south of that. the area they're monitoring even larger right now, a lot of what's going to be taking place is contingent on those weather systems. you heard the gentleman say, westerly winds. that's because high pressure is just to the east of that debris. you've got tho
