meteorologist veronica johnson is in the storm center tracking the radar. hey, vj. amps little busy this afternoon a few severe thunderstorm warnings already and a slight chance that we could see another warning or two issued. here's what's going on. i'm monitoring a couple areas now the one warned earlier, prince william county, as far as fauquier county as well, up to the north and east, around delaware, there could be another batch moving in. this storm around fairfax just went up. and another one around warren. but this is the area through warrenton right now with some lightning on it. i think if there's any other area that gets warned on soon it maybe culpepper county. i'm going to keep a close eye on this area as these storms press to the south and west, very slowly again, 10 to 15 miles an hour, on toward locust -- dale and ashburn area. if you are going to be traveling, the weather will have a moderate impact on area roads for the evening, overnight. we get better by early tomorrow morning. we will have your beach forecast coming up. >> thanks, vj. >>> now t

veronica johnson will be in the ocean city area for the next couple of days and looking at the beacherosion and the potomac and down towards georgetown we could see significant coastal flooding there. winds to 40 miles per hour and that could take down some trees and three to six inches more on top of what we've seen over the last 24 hours and here is that forecast for you. three to six inches plus and it's close to the chesapeake and d.c., down toward fredericksburg and still significant amount. two to three inches as we move on through the day on saturday and then we turn to joaquin which right now is a category 1 hurricane with 85 mile an hour wind and a healthy-looking storm and not moving much. the late of the advisory has it moving to the west at 8 and it's expected to move toward the north and just be off the coast of jacksonville with a strong category 3 storm with winds of 18 miles per hour and notice the latest track as of 5:00. it brings it right on top of d.c. do not look at this track and why do i say that? well, this will change over the next couple of days. you saw yes

. >> chief meteorologist doug kammerer and veronica johnson are tracking the radar and hot temperatures out there right now. >> most ofdpz those storms conte to be just off to the west. we talked about this yesterday, that most of them would stay back toward the blue ridge, exactly what we are seeing. >> talk about slow moving, 10 miles an hour, a chance of hail for these, they continue to lift and some heavy rain as well. >> some heavy rain, lightning, get it. storm team4 radar tracking these storms for you. one thing -- these are called pulse thunderstorms. what's going to happen here, you are going to see these pulse up real quick and pulse right back down. when they come down, they actually dissolve and lose intensity, actually put out a bit of a boundary here, that is what we are seeing, these little outflow boundaries. with that, we could see showers pop up just about any were we have got one popping again over manassas. this is the area of the strongest storms around madison county, back down toward the men is nan dough wa county area, new storm in culpeper, the warrenton area, t

meteorologist veronica johnson is here with a look at the labor day forecast. >>> good morning. the storms we kcome through ares of know behind the system is major cooldown. it's not lasting that long. the northern states 73 expected onl labor day. 72 in bismarck. a stack of 72 and 79 from seattle to eugene. throughout the week even in the northwest the cooling will be short term. the temperatures are going to be up into the mid 80s so rising by five or six degrees. down toward sacramento talking 104 to 106 in red bluff. through the week the heat peaking. while california doesn't get much of a cool down on top of that you're seeing dry conditions as well. here is a look at satellite and radar. you can see how quiet it is there. hurricane linda is expected to curve toward baja toward the end of the week. good news there. that's a look in redding and 97. a little bit of heat for california on labor day weekend. >> thank you so much. >>> straight ahead meet the man who hasn't showered in 12 years. >>> plus iraq is getting serious in the fight against isis using u.s.-built f-16 figh

meteorologist veronica johnson is here with a look at the labor day forecast. a lot of people wanting to get outside, do some barbecuing today. is that on did tap? >> that is on tap. two areas of the country you're going to have to keep your eye on today. that is the southeast. showers and thunderstorms firing up. this is a look a the national satellite and radar. as we focus in on that part of the country down through the southeast ound tampa, more showers and thunde torms. this will be the big zone for thunderstorms. from areas of northern michigan right down toward northerecn missouri, yesterday those areas had not only hail but also some flash flooding in spots and even some high winds. for today our temperatures start out in the mid-60s to low 70s. at area of high pressure now building. so while we've had the comfortable weather across the northeast, now it's that southwesterly flow. temperatures will move from yesterday in the mid and upper 80s, today to the low 90s in areas of the northeast. for boston, new york ci, right do ir into washington, d.c., sev

our family represented, veronica johnson, pat muse, and veronica provided the amazing weather. it was just stunning out there. >> oh, my gosh. and the people were amazing that came up to talk with us. >> they were prepared with umbrellas, but not for rain. for sun. >> it was a hot day. i don't think we're done with the 80s yet, but boy, we're cool today. showers in the forecast for the next couple of hours. keep that in mind if you're heading to the game, nats taking on the o's, the battle of the beltway. there might be a delay. temperatures of course in the 60s, coming on down. bring the sweatshirts and a ponc poncho. we're down to 64 degrees by last out. by then we'll start to see the rain tapering off, should be ending by 9 or 10:00. the areas that have been the driest, eastern parts of maryland, around southeast maryland, around waldorf, leonardtown. it's been dry for a good chunk of today. we've seen that rain edge eastward. we're wet from the beltway to i-66, up i-95, as well as around route 1 down south. road impacts for the evening. again, traffic could be a little slow

if you're away from your tv, track those showers with the nbc washington app just like veronica johnson does. isn't that right, veronica? >> absolutely. >> and a lot of people do, too. it's a great way to keep up with the forecast and with the latest rain that's coming closer to us. could have some flooding in the shenandoah valley and out of the mountains later tonight. but right now, a few scattered sprinkles south of the metro area. and right now, dry for now. but that heavier rain moves in later tonight. we'll be in the 70s with those showers coming through. maybe some flashes of lightning. then the downpours taper off and maybe during the day on wednesday, just a small chance of a shower. blustery winds, big story tomorrow. high 70s. much cooler tomorrow, chance of a shower on thursday as well. >>> two people from our area are now considered geniuses. the two each received the so-called genius grant today. they are awarded to art leaders and scientists. it gives the winners $625,000 over the next five years. congratulations to both coates and cohen this morning. >>> from taking as

veronica johnson just telling me how she uses pickle juice for her chicken nuggets. i have no idea how that actually works out, but that's what she's telling me right now. i'm calling you out. 83 degrees the current temperature and plenty of sunshine across the region. what are we going to see as we move on through the night tonight. >> 81 in gaithersburg and 81 in martinsburg, and 80 and dropping to 76 by 9:00 and if you'll be out at some of the football games and maybe -- veronica posted that on her website, she says if you want to check out her facebook page. no rain to talk about and you know we've been on the dry side. it's that dominant area of high pressure. look down to the south and we have a storm down to the south, but it can't move out. it can't get in here and that area of high pressure has been sitting here for days and it is going to be moving though, and this weekend we'll see that change and first off, temperatures dropping into the mid-50s for the most part and mid-50s in the city and saturday afternoon, warming quickly. a high of 85 in gaithersburg

. >>> meteorologist veronica johnson has been working all afternoon on the papal forecast. v.j., what is the latest? >> we are going back and forth on this, but for right now, for today, we're going for a much cooler weather over our area on tuesday and much of next week. by how many degrees? ten degrees cooler than today when the pope visits on tuesday. the other thing is that there is a chance for some rain showers around the area especially early in the day. by 2:00 any rain chances or drizzle chances with the east wind will start to wane. so we get into the afternoon and a chance for some sunshine and yes, we're still talking about some warm conditions relatively show because a couple of days next week we could see temperatures lower than the 78 degrees that we're forecasting during the pope's visit. 2:00, 4:00, 6:00 and back down to the mid-70s by then. so i'm talking about a cool pattern for next week and we'll give you the hard temperatures with the seven-day forecast coming up. >>> we have breaking news from the live desk and university boulevard near langley park b

chief meteorologist doug kammerer and meteorologist veronica johnson are in the storm center.g, what's happening out there right now? >> right now tracking just a few showers. some of us saw rain over the weekend and others did not see much at all. today just a few light showers, but tomorrow. >> tomorrow we get a lot of rain and we want a busy week. this is the kind of week where folks need to stay tuned to the forecast and we'll have something of everything this week and the potential is there for some very heavy rain starting with the day tomorrow and just shower activity and storm team 4 radar picking up on these showers over the fredericksburg area right in through here coming in through the pot sylvania county and he's are for the most part light showers and right along 15 as you come right down from leesburg right on down toward the south. we want to continue to see a few of these showers and there is a ton of moisture just down to the south and toward the carolinas and more moisture down toward tennessee. i do expect to see some heavy rain and i'll show you when that h

. >> doug kammerer and veronica johnson kicking off our coverage in the storm center. we mentioned that state of america and we are watching the latest track of joaquin does move closer to the region, but we first have to deal with friday and saturday and that's when we get the heavy rain. >> that's the second one and the third whammy potentially and it's a track that can change and i'll show that track in just a moment. >> we're taking a look at the radar across the region and it's seeing the rain toward the south and what will happen over the next few days. notice nothing going on around our region and this moisture just off the coast will be brought right back in with a very strong northeasterly flow and that's what we've been talking about for days now and we'll get the nor'easter first and it's on friday. we see a strong northeasterly wind and that brings in the rain and that brings in those winds upward of 30 to 40 piles per hour and coastal flooding along the potomac and flooding around the rest of the region and we saw a lot last night and tonight's headlines,

meteorologist veronica johnson joins us now. >> that's right. what does that mean, jonathan?r heat and some summer storms. take a look. the latest satellite and radar showing clouds and where it's raining. things may be quieting down over the south, they're still firing in the midwest across wisconsin and minnesota. that is where there will be a risk of severe weather with hail, high winds and even the possibility of river flooding right along the weather front driving eastward. that will be the main focus for the next 24, 48 hours. here is a look at the weather today. nice for the eastern third of the country. the north central stormy. temperatures topping out in the mid 80s in d.c., atlanta. even in new york. it's been awfully pleasant. midsection part of the country will be warming up to around 96. 100 degrees. san an tone, 97 with oklahoma city, more storms chicago to st. louis. even the east this time, labor day itself will start warming up. best location, of course, always the beach. >> pity neither of us will be there. meteorologist veronica johnson, thank for joining

chief meteorologist doug kammerer leads our coverage alongside veronica johnson in the storm center. >> another hot day across our region, currently sitting at 95 degrees at the airport, three days in a row close to 95. really hot. and have showers and thunderstorms on the radar, but not the coverage we had yesterday or the intensity with these storms. the heaviest storms in through portions of southern maryland. you notice the radar mostly on the clear side, what we have been talking about the last couple of days. most of us would stay dry, but seeing shower activity now in and around the d.c. metro area, especially southern maryland. zoom in on charles county. notice the lightning here around the charles -- the charles county/st. mary's county line, around mechanicsville. extreme prince george's county, calvert county and up toward the north, around the clinton area, we have seen a lot of showers around the oxon hill region toward clinton and upper marlboro, another shower just to the north and east of marlboro. now, i want to show you what's causing this, a little boundary helped

we want to check in for the holiday forecast with veronica johnson. how is it looking?ing to build. there's a chance for some showers and thunderstorms. miami, florida, all the way northward to the western gulf coast today. you're looking at a live radar and satellite review. not much going on across the country, so we're doing okay this holiday. meanwhile, chicago, down towards st. louis on labor day, some storms building, and behind that front that's producing those storms, temperatures are cooling down. they're coming way down. 68 in minneapolis, minnesota. 40s right now. temperatures on the rise, but still a little cooler than average across the northern most states today. 75 in d.c., 74 in new york. but temperatures, we're talking about heat for the next couple days in the east. 91 degrees in new york city. temperatures also rising down toward the south. if you're looking for temperatures to cool and stay down, that's mid-september, thomas, when a pattern change over the east will start taking place and folks can start enjoying more fall-like temperatures. >> we lo

meteorologist veronica johnson is joining me with all of the weather headlines. eronica. >> hello, hello. a little bit of everything for you. we've got rip currents in the east. we've got storms in the midwest. and we've got some heat building back to parts of the country. take a look at this picture. this is out of nags head, north carolina, the atlantic beaches, areas like north toward delaware. we've had some moderate rip currents. yesterday, today. that will be the case also tomorrow on labor day. so if you're headed to the beach, heads up for the atlantic area. meanwhile, another zone we're watching right here, minnesota. down toward iowa. minneapolis, minnesota, omaha, all seeing some very strong and severe thunderstorms today. they'll have everything from hail to high winds there. possibly even some river flooding. and the risk of that will hopefully diminish this evening. but the focus then for the east is back on to the heat. while we're enjoying some relatively comfortable conditions today after last week's heat, things are going way back up again from 8
