i'm veronica johnson. welcome to "news 4 this week." things have warmed up over the last couple of days, and it's helped tremendously with melting. but as the pavement starts to resurface, we're finding a whole new issue. boom! potholes. news 4 has a look at one of the problem spots in arlington. >> reporter: well, as we get into the freeze-thaw cycle, we're not only worried about this being on the ground. now we're worried about this. the actual road coming apart with potholes. that's what's happening right here on williamsburg boulevard. with every hit -- >> it's just really loud. like the whole house is shaking. >> reporter: christina thomas and her boys are feeling it. >> it's a little bit, yeah, there you go. you can hear it. >> reporter: her house is right next to these newly formed potholes at the bottom of the hill. as the temperatures go up and down, the road gives a little bit. drivers noticing the new craters. >> i didn't like them. >> reporter: and then there are the other challenges right now. lanes disappearing. bike lanes

there's a lot of snow left, veronica johnson. i know you're outside right now talking about the chance for melting over the next couple days. >> it's amazing when you look around and you see a sea of white and you know it goes deep. where are we going to put all this snow? we will get some help with mother nature with the melting and a couple other key factors, the sun, the wind, fog, moisture, even a chance for a little bit of rain coming our way this week. all part of that along with, of course, alongside the road as the snow gets dirtier, it does allow for more melting. it's the absorption as opposed to the reflection that the sun typically does when it's so white and clean. but at 40 degrees for three days straight, you can melt about 2 to 3 inches of snow per day. we're really going to get a chance to eat away at all the snow that's on the ground and right near area roads, neighborhoods included. i talked to maryland highway administration. they said that they use salt above 25 degrees. temperatures will be above 25 degrees.

let's start with meteorologist veronica johnson. veronica, talk about totals. how much are we talking about? two feet? yes, we are in some areas talking about two feet. a lot of locations, most locations we'll see over a foot and we'll break it down for you in just a couple of minutes as to how quickly we'll get that foot. your commuter forecast out of the door and it's a dry start for us and 24 degrees, the temperature with an overcast sky and you can see by tomorrow afternoon we've got snow that will be falling. so this time tomorrow, yes, already a few inches of snowfall. roads will become snow covered and yes, slick just like everything. we'll show you the snow line up toward hagerstown and this is at 3:00 p.m. once the snow moves in it will be coming down very quickly. the snowfall rates will be very high friday in through early saturday morning and we could have snowfall rates of 1 to three inches of an hour and folks are asking could we have thundersnow? the answer is yes, we could possibly see that especially with the higher amounts coming through up un

angles for you as we ramp up for whatever the weather throws our way and with doug kammerer and veronica johnson. what's happening right now, guys? >> we're watching a system coming through and we've been talking about a system and i don't want you to think it's been taking us by surprise and the system making its way right now by our area and seeing the snow coming on in here and it's just a little too dry and the atmosphere too dry and this is what's moving our way. you can see the snow trying to break out and it will take time in order to do that as well as you have to moisten the atmosphere and you may see areas of snow around 6:00, 7:00 and this is how you can tell it's dry and it's almost a circle here and it extends up and more snow up here and not reaching the ground just yet and as the snow moves in we'll start to see this come down and around the metro area we'll see snow and that's when we have a winter weather advisory and it doesn't go into effect until 6:00 tonight and the winter weather advisory, how much? it's a half an inch to an inch, but because it's been so cold that inch cou

doug kammerer and veronica johnson are looking how cold it will get. their forecast is straight ahead at 5:00. >>> we showed you live pictures of this fire in an apartment complex in adelphi as it was happening a couple weeks ago. our chopper flying over as two people had to be rescued. tonight we know now the fire was an accident. fire investigators say an aerosol can came in contact with an open flame on a kitchen stove. the apartment quickly became engulfed. all of the residents in the building were displaced and two people inside the apartment were seriously burned. the husband has been released from the hospital but his wife is still there recovering. >>> a baby decided to come a month early and was born in the aftermath of the blizzard. so his mom had no choice but to deliver her son herself. she was headed to the hospital on a snowy highway north of philadelphia on sunday. she was just 15 minutes away but that was 15 minutes too long for little brantley. well, brantley watis born at 4 pounds, 8 ounces. both he and his mom are doing just fine now

right now veronica johnson outside. v.j., the wind in a situation like this makes a difference. >> reporter: we were buttoned up, scarves, hat on. i lost the hat for right now. i'm still going with the gloves. it is cold, just not quite as windy. our windchills this morning, take a look at them, they were down below zero briefly around 5:004:00, 5:00, 6:00 a.m. the windchills are in the low 30s because we barely have any wind left hanging on. the wind is pretty calm. this evening, a calm wind, settles down to the upper 20s by 8:00, 9:00. as doug mentioned, a cold start before we see those temperatures rebound. doug, of course, you'll have more on that coming up a little later. >> yeah, that's right. we're talking about coming up at 5:25, not just one, but two areas around us that saw snow od

veronica johnson, v.j., you were outside last hour, how have things changed. >> the snow in this one pocket has slowed down just a bit and those areas that you just showed on the map, bright white where we're seeing the moderate and each heavy snow come into the area and that will allow us overnight to really ramp up as we'll go from this much snow to that much snow. look at the difference between 7:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. from 2 to 5 inches across the area by 7:00 p.m. and by 11:00 p.m. we're talking about a foot in some locations and two feet of snow overnight while you're sleeping. we get so much because of the snowfall rates and two to three inches per hour and there could be some thundersnow and by late in the day this is 11:00 p.m. tomorrow. over 30 inches in many locations. this is really going to ramp up in a hurry which is why we're saying it's a good reason to clear the snow over every couple of hours so that you're not lifting all that heavy snow all at once. pack snow even three to five inches is five pounds per square foot and the other thing we're seeing out on area road

once again that wind is going to be a factor right on through the rest of the evening hours and veronica johnson the storm team 4 weather deck and v.j., you combine this wind with those temperatures and those windchills are brutal. >> that they are. they're brutal right now and we're expecting them to be even lower by early tomorrow morning and it's hard to believe. we're in the single digits and a few locations have dropped below zero already and hagerstown, martinsburg and minus 2, minus 1 and single digits in d.c. and we're holding in the teens and by early tomorrow morning sub-zero windchill readings and that will mean for some extremely harsh conditions and 15 your temperature and 8:00 a.m. and the wind will be staying throughout the day tomorrow and high temperature of 25 degrees and we'll go from windchill temperature, 0 to 5 in the early morning and feeling as good as teens by the afternoon. that is it. it gets a little better, though, doug by mid-week. >> it will feel a little bit better and the winds will begin to calm, but we'll still be quite cold as we move on through the next coupl
