vianey has a look at forecast for us today.lity still the big concern for us in the bay area with the fires burning around. >> indeed. one thing we always like to mention this is a changing situation. there could be a new fire that stoortsz change in the direction of the wind. right now where we're expecting to see some of the worst air quality is going to be in the santa clara valley. that's the reason why they decided to go ahead and extend the spare the air alert. 65 degrees, the bay area air quality management district i mean. san jose live look. livermore 68 degrees. we're starting out kind of mild, i want to say warm. to start out in the 70s even though yesterday was the unofficial end to summer, doesn't feel that way. 24-hour temperature change, five degrees warmer in livermore compared to the past 24 hours. concord four degrees warmer and through santa rosa and napa as well. as far as your hour-by-hour outlook, we will get a couple morning low clouds pass through. any time we see cloud cover mixed with the smoke it does

the vianey, how is it shaping up for us today?it's going to be a really dry, hot day for the interior valleys which is going to bring concern for an elevated fire danger. and the spare the air alert was extended through today from the bay area quality management district. 76 degrees right now. still have some lingering fog and clouds around san francisco. 61 degrees right now. so let's take a look at how the rest of our day is going to shape up. spare the air alert, valleys are going to be in the 90s and triple digits. and we're talking about fire danger in inland areas, especially through this afternoon. there's an air quality advisory for the north bay and the south bay. you can see so far the aqi index scale shows it is moderate. but when you look at santa clara valley, still unhealthy above that 100 mark, especially for sensitive groups for today we had a little bit of that smoke mixing in but also this high pressure plays a role in this as well. we're already at 88 degrees in fairfield and in through livermore. 86 degrees and

. >> we want to bring in meteorologist vianey arana now. vianey, talk to us about the air quality. how is it shaping up this labor day? >> those calmer winds over the past couple of days definitely helped in the fight for that fire. but of course when the winds picked up from the north, it pushed down the smoke into our region as the winds were coming up from the north. this is a look at the greater tahoe area. you can see a little bit of haze there. they're still dealing with unhealthy air quality themselves. we've got a little bit of blue peeking through. any time a spare the air alert is issued, it is when that air quality index gets above the 101 mark when it comes to the scale right up here. so notice, yes, it's still going to be unhealthy until we see more containment of that fire, but over the next couple of days we are expecting for the air quality to get a little bit better. this is the forecast and the outlook for today. so moderate for the north bay, coast and bay and south bay. you can see some pockets of blue, but there could be periods of time where we get some pocket

vianey arana joins us with your microclimate forecast.are under a microclimate weather alert. >> we are indeed because unfortunately of that air quality that is expected to be unhealthy for today and tomorrow, so i want to guide you through how to plan your afternoon because i know it's a long weekend for a lot of people and i'm sure a lot of you want to spend time outdoors but you have to be mindful because take a look at the forecast for today. unhealthy when it comes to the air quality. north bay to santa clara valley including the coast and bay so what we're seeing around the coastline, cloudy conditions and cool, a mix of that smoke in there and that's what creates sort of that haze, but especially part of one of the sensitive groups limit outdoor activities and it's going to be pretty wham. we have high pressure building and that's going to bring us mid to upper 90s especially for those interior valleys. it's going to be warmer around the bay. we are expecting dry conditions. heading into monday labor day i'll have a closer look at

how are things looking so far, vianey? >> we get that drifting smoke, of course, but pair that with the high pressure and you get a combination of really just gunk in the air, a ton of pollutants which is why the spare the air alert is in effect. we're talking 90s, triple digits, but let's go over some of that air quality. so first let's head over to the tahoe basin and see how it's doing up there. of course, this is what we're seeing some of the worst air quality. just a reminder, a spare the air alert is issued when the aqi, air quality index, hits above 101. according to the bay area air quality management district that's what we're seeing in some spots. take a look at the tahoe basin, unhealthy air continues. it's going to take a while but the winds have significantly calmed down which has certainly helped in the fight against that fire there. now as far as here locally we're going to continue to see some of the smoke push into our region, moving south into the bay area. especially for those folks who live in the north

vianey, you're tracking hurricane larry and where it's headed. >> yeah. know the thing is we are actively in hurricane season, so this is kind of what's going on right now when it comes to hurricane larry. the biggest threat to the east coast, expected to be a major hurricane with the threat of coastal flooding, gusty conditions. two ends of the spectrum, dealing with the potential of more serious flooding we're dealing with extreme dry conditions and extreme drought locally. we're going to monitor that closely as it continues to make its trek through the east coast. we'll keep an eye on that for sure. now as far as your traffic conditions go, bringing its back a little closer to home, there is a crash reported by the chp along story road. one lane closed. keep that in mind traveling through the south bay. back to you. >>> marking 20 years since 9/11. how one east bay town plans to honor the lives of people lost on that fateful day you. >> taking action. the steps speaker of the house nancy pelosi is taking to the controversial abortion ban in texas. >>>

meteorologist vianey arana has been keeping an eye on it. >> we had some drifting smoke that may bring on some haze to portions of inland areas. live look in san francisco. you can see that marine layer. nice layer of fog there, and overall we're expecting moderate air conditions and the bay air quality not expected to go to unhealthy air quality but just enough to bump up those numbers into the 50s and 60s based on the air quality outlook. not just for today but heading into the weekend as well because of that drifting smoke. especially for areas in the north bay, the coast, the south bay looking good right now. but santa clara valley, seeing that drifting smoke pushing northward from the central coast of california. and as we head into the weekend we're expecting to get a little bit of a cooler trend which is good news because we, of course, saw 90s for the official start of fall. in san jose, comfortable overall. light variable winds, 74 degrees. into the afternoon between 2:00 and 3:00, mid and upper 80s for the forecast. i'll go into more detail on how the rest of the bay area is

following a, 9/11, 20 years later and then on nbc bay area watch "today in the bay" with kira klapper and vianey arana. that starts at 8:00 a.m. >>> 4:38 right now and an up expected twist. we'll take you to the dixie fire burning right now and we know that it continues to grow there in lassen county. there are more evacuation orders for folks who are living near hoover flat reservoir. the flames burned another 15,000 or so acres yesterday and the area is now up to nearly 1500 square miles. the fire is about 60% contained at this point. we want to go to meteorologist kari hall as we were driving into the station, i know scott saw some lightning i saw lightning in the south bay. last year when this happened we were like this is a cool light show but now we know how serious it is. >> absolutely. and so when you see those lightening strikes you think where did that hit and could it have basically hit some dry vegetation and some of the hills that we have. that's what we've been watching for here. as we get a look at storm ranger and some of the areas that are dealing with some of the lightning stri

vianey, how is our gameday forecast and our weather in the bay area? >> it's looking good for today. perfect football weather. not too hot, not too cold. we're in the 70s. beautiful view, so let's get to the forecast. as you mentioned, they just opened the gates. we're in the 70s. around 5:20, in the low 70s. by halftime, dipping down to the mid and upper 60s, but by the end of the game, low 60s. i hope everybody came prepared. if you're wondering about the air quality, there is an air quality advisory in effect through tomorrow, but the good news is right now, air quality is looking good. we have the green sensors here down through santa clara county, which is of course, where the stadium is located. throughout the entire bay area. so what are we expecting heading into the week ahead? we are monitoring an unsettled weather pattern that's going to dip down, tomorrow, bringing us rain chances for the north and also those cooler temperatures are expected to remain, topping out only in the 70s for tomorrow, up through napa. 72, san jose. 73, concord. 77.

. >>> vianey arana joining us now. is that smoke the smoke that we are getting over parts of the bay area or is it from north? i guess it could be from anywhere. >> essentially we are seeing it from the central/southern california. some of is from the sequoia. we have the fires in northern california and it changes on the direction of the wind which is why the bay area air quality management district extended the air quality advisory through monday because of that drifting smoke. of course, we will see cooler weather this weekend. san jose right now you can see a live look. we are cloudy and san francisco seeing a nice marine layer, so foggy in some portions of the coast, including near the golden gate bridge. we will see that again tomorrow morning as well. let's talk about that air quality advisory. because of that wildfire smoke so far we are seeing moderate to good air quality from the north bay down to santa clarita valley. however, because of the periods of smoke at times that's why that was extended into monday
