let's bring in vianey. the sierra is not getting a break with the storms. >> the window of opportunity is closed to get up there safely. judging by the latest model run until next thursday. that gives you a closer look. let's talk about the statewide average. 192% is the snow. how much snow can we expect in we will see that snow really start to ramp up. remember, this is just one of two atmospheric rivers. by the time the next atmospheric river rolls through on monday, we could see 1100 inches of snowfall in kirkwood. that will translate to the potential for flooding, but also let's talk about snow weight to water content. here is the graphic. wet snow has a 5 to 1 ratio. that is equal to 18,720 pounds. the trucks are there for perspective. most roofs can hold 20 pounds per square footage. that means we could see a lot of snow loading concerns and structure damage as we inch closer to the first and second atmospheric river. be mindful. gusty winds up to 150 miles per hour to the sierra crest. mike? >>> the

meteorologist vianey arana has been tracking the storm for us. vianey, how is it looking right now?we're starting to see some of those cells get a little stronger and this is where you could see the majority of the system using satellite radar. if i zoom this in using our mobile doppler radar stormranger, you can see some of the heavier rain just off the coast. let's take a closer look to see when this does move in. around campbell, notice at around 6:20 we'll get heavier downpours, 6:05 around boulder creek and alameda around 6:25. the rain you see is going to ramp up some of the rain rates within the next hour or so. what to expect for today, because this system looks like it's moving out rather quickly, the rain totals are down a little bit, which is great because we have the flood concern. the soil is extremely saturated, flood watches are in effect. for monterey county, they are under a flood warning. there is a potential for landslides and also as the winds kick up, around 10:00 a.m. especially, through noon, we could see the potential for downed trees and power outages becaus

vianey arana is tracking it for us. how is it looking? >> we're seeing that the system is starting to move on to, you know, away from the coast and on land. we can see where the biggest impacts of the storm, and yes it's a little bit further south. this is good news for us. unfortunate for southern california, they are going to get the brunt of the atmospheric river. we can't put our guard down because we're going to see the gusty winds move in. you can see santa cruz is about to get some of the rain moved through there. you can see it on satellite and radar. those heavier pockets of rain will intensify in the next two hours as well. catching light to moderate rain through santa rosa, san rafael, fairfield and concord as well, down through the south bay, a little bit starting to come down in san jose, and here's just off the coast, that's going to start to make its move inland. overall, here's what we can expect. the storm is moving in, but the biggest impact i'm going to be seeing from this, aside from the rain from the santa cruz mounta

meteorologist vianey arana has the latest update on the drought monitor. vianey? >>> after a record dry start to 2022, the active weather pattern of 2023 has proven beneficial to the drought monitor. all of that rain and sierra snow. let's take a closer look at the comparison of where we started at the beginning of the water year in september of 2022. 88% of california was still under the extreme category with 46% in the exceptional category. that is the worst of the categories. now today we have removed the red zone in the state of california and a lot of these places are now drought free. we have surpassed our seasonal rainfall. now just two weeks ago almost all of california was under some form of drought. as of this morning, parts of california's coast and even in through the valleys are drought free. plus we still have more rain on the way and a healthy sierra snowpack, 192% of statewide average. this also doesn't count the last storm that we saw. this gets released every thursday so hopefully only more good news to come. >> thanks, vianey. what does this mea

. >>> let's bring in meteorologist vianey arana now. this has been an emergency. you have been watching these maps for years. how is the report? >> october 1st, 2022, according to the national weather service, there have been 29 atmospheric rivers since then. some of them weaker and some of them stronger than others. compare that to today, and you can see, 99% of the bay area is drought-free. so that's really impressive. only 36% of the entire state of california is still under some form of drought. but so far, we have surpassed our seasonal rainfall average quicker than we normally do. >> quite the change, that before and after, in just a matter of months. >> and you know what? we have more rain to come. enjoy the sunshine tomorrow and saturday. if you notice in the green here where the color change is that puts us well above average. looking at the extended outlook it doesn't look like we will end march on an active weather pattern, so that means more rain. but sierra snowpack, this plays a key role in our drought as well. it typically peaks around april 1st. lo

let's bring in our meteorologist, vianey arana, who johns us with a look at what to expect the next few days. >> our window of sunshine is closing in, janelle. we have rain and it looks like more low-elevation snow right now. look at our camera, you can see snow on the peaks of our close bay area regions. we could see it yet again heading into saturday. let's get right to your microclimate radar because take a look at this. we have the cloud covering moving in but you can already see that system setting out in the pacific. this is going to be a colder air system which means it is going to bring a ton of instability that could not only mean snow but also rain and wind and even the chance of an isolated pocket of hail. i do want to give you a closer look at santa rosa because if you live in the north bay you will be first to see the rain early into saturday morning. it is about 55 degrees right now. i talked about the window of opportunity between the dry weather and the rain. notice we stay dry all night. it isn't until tomorrow morning early morning we will start to see the waves of rai

meteorologist vianey arana is tracking what we can expect this morning. right now, vianey, only lingering showers. >> we still have activity but the weather pattern will settle down as we head into the afternoon and into the evening. but i do want to show you, we're seeing pretty good rotation. what happens is as this rotates it actually feeds in the moisture. so we can expect to keep that rain pretty much through the first half of our morning. stormranger right now, mobile doppler radar, scanning the skies in san carlos, san jose, livermore, pretty widespread through fairfield as well. down through the santa cruz mountains. now, if you live south of the golden gate bridge, it will be a lot slower to clear. we have rain activity that's going to linger, especially for the mountains. here is a closer look at what to expect. we will see breezy to windy conditions, but nowhere near as gusty as yesterday. the gusty winds and the wind warnings have expired as the storm begins to move out. looking ahead, we do have a break, but a second storm in our seven-day fo

first, let's start with meteorologist vianey arana, tracking that storm. where are we now?rm activity beginning to develop through parts of the interior. zooming in the radar, you can see it starting to spark up, especially closer toward the sierra. the blue and pink you see is a lot of snow that will continue to come down for the entire weekend, leading into next week. we have a couple of cells moving flew san francisco. notice some pockets of heavy downpours at times through the santa cruz mountains. also expecting to see some rain continue to push through. then it's going to begin to stall out a little bit closer to the south bay, at least for the first half of our friday. notice a lot of the rain starting to push a little further south through hollister, along the grapevine, heading to l.a. it's going to be an absolute mess for at least the next four to five hours. as far as the flood watch, this is in effect for all of the areas highlighted in green. we do still have a wind advisory. rain totals so far have been pretty significant, especially for some of those higher e
