we're ba vianey arana: welcome, thank you for joining us, i'm meteorologist vianey arana. here at "nbc bay area," we're tracking our "climate in crisis." it's been a wild winter, the sierras saw a record amount of snowfall in 2023, and that created dangerous conditions for resorts, people getting up to tahoe, and of course, residents. let's gain some insight. the latest winter season brought a nice boost we were looking for. when we started january 2024, the snowpack was sitting around 30%, this after a record 2023 year. but after a series of storms, and as a warmer months approach, here's what it looks like a summer unfolds. now, for perspective, the sierra range is more than 400 miles long, its alpine region covers a large part of the state's inland territory, and it's a big player in our water supply. northern sierra, right now, is at 90%, central sierra is at 35%, and southern sierra is at 14%. that puts us at a statewide average of 41%, and a 10% of the april 1st average, when we typically see a peak in the season. now, our changing climate is affecting the timing, lo

so i am here now with meteorologist vianey arana vianey. you've been you've been keeping a close track on all that smoke headed our way. we really have. and you know, when you're getting winds blowing from the north, it pushes a lot of that smoke further south, which is why folks in the south bay, probably today, are finally going to be seeing some of that haze, unfortunately. and i do want to show you this map right here showing the active fire. so no matter where you are in california, sadly stretching down through southern california , we have a form of active wildfire burning. so that definitely impacts the air quality really for the entire state. now, i do want to show you where we're seeing some of that smoke pollution. but if you look at this video here, you'll notice when we start to see some of that smoke drifting. of course, some of the greatest impacts will be in the immediate areas of a fire. and then just based on where the winds are blowing from, is typically in the direction that we see a lot of the heaviest impacts on that l

meteorologist vianey arana tracking the warm up for us.in the bay's bob redell is live in the east bay. bob, you're talking about how crews are preparing for that high fire danger. correct. we are here in livermore. good morning to chris and laura, which doesn't get very hot today. and you'll recall we had a very wet rainy season which produced a lot of vegetation that is now drying out and extremely flammable in these hot temps. as you can see behind me, this just this past saturday, there was a 44 acre wildfire that burned in this field behind me just north of 580 here at the altamont in livermore, which prompted a quick response from firefighters. this is not far from where the 14 000 acre corral fire burned a week and a half ago, and tracee yesterday, another fire broke out in the east san jose foothills and burned through a garage with a number of cars inside. one person was taken to the hospital and unfortunately, these fire conditions are going to be worse today. the national weather service is vienna is going to talk about has issu

meteorologist vianey arana is in for kerry and leads our coverage. so what are we looking at?urse we also mentioned the elevated fire danger. so i want to give you a quick breakdown of what we mean when we're talking about the components that bring on that higher risk when it comes to hot weather, dry wind versus the timing of the heat brings accelerated drying. if you look at the blue temperature trend line there, that's the 2024 trend. if you look at the red line, notice we're right below that red and kind of orangey glow. that's going to bring a moderated risk for today when it comes to those fuels. we're looking at things like grasses, trees, brushes and for today grasses. as far as the moisture content is going to be low, which brings an elevated danger. so anything around your area you see that dry brush please keep this in mind. it's always important to maintain it, especially as you see these humidity levels really go down. i think that the highest risk will be for the north bay, and especially also the inland east bay as well. look at concord 21, clear lake 15, and th
