we're ba vianey arana: welcome, thank you for joining us, i'm meteorologist vianey arana. here at "nbc bay area," we're tracking our "climate in crisis." it's been a wild winter, the sierras saw a record amount of snowfall in 2023, and that created dangerous conditions for resorts, people getting up to tahoe, and of course, residents. let's gain some insight. the latest winter season brought a nice boost we were looking for. when we started january 2024, the snowpack was sitting around 30%, this after a record 2023 year. but after a series of storms, and as a warmer months approach, here's what it looks like a summer unfolds. now, for perspective, the sierra range is more than 400 miles long, its alpine region covers a large part of the state's inland territory, and it's a big player in our water supply. northern sierra, right now, is at 90%, central sierra is at 35%, and southern sierra is at 14%. that puts us at a statewide average of 41%, and a 10% of the april 1st average, when we typically see a peak in the season. now, our changing climate is affecting the timing, lo

so i am here now with meteorologist vianey arana vianey. you've been you've been keeping a close track on all that smoke headed our way. we really have. and you know, when you're getting winds blowing from the north, it pushes a lot of that smoke further south, which is why folks in the south bay, probably today, are finally going to be seeing some of that haze, unfortunately. and i do want to show you this map right here showing the active fire. so no matter where you are in california, sadly stretching down through southern california , we have a form of active wildfire burning. so that definitely impacts the air quality really for the entire state. now, i do want to show you where we're seeing some of that smoke pollution. but if you look at this video here, you'll notice when we start to see some of that smoke drifting. of course, some of the greatest impacts will be in the immediate areas of a fire. and then just based on where the winds are blowing from, is typically in the direction that we see a lot of the heaviest impacts on that l
