. >> we want to bring in meteorologist vianey arana now. vianey, talk to us about the air quality. how is it shaping up this labor day? >> those calmer winds over the past couple of days definitely helped in the fight for that fire. but of course when the winds picked up from the north, it pushed down the smoke into our region as the winds were coming up from the north. this is a look at the greater tahoe area. you can see a little bit of haze there. they're still dealing with unhealthy air quality themselves. we've got a little bit of blue peeking through. any time a spare the air alert is issued, it is when that air quality index gets above the 101 mark when it comes to the scale right up here. so notice, yes, it's still going to be unhealthy until we see more containment of that fire, but over the next couple of days we are expecting for the air quality to get a little bit better. this is the forecast and the outlook for today. so moderate for the north bay, coast and bay and south bay. you can see some pockets of blue, but there could be periods of time where we get some pocket

emergency room visits in those states are also 3.5 times as high. >>> meteorologist vianey arana in right. the vianey, how is it shaping up for us today? >> it's going to be a really dry, hot day for the interior valleys which is going to bring concern for an elevated fire danger. and the spare the air alert was extended through today from the bay area quality management district. 76 degrees right now. still have some lingering fog and clouds around san francisco. 61 degrees right now. so let's take a look at how the rest of our day is going to shape up. spare the air alert, valleys are going to be in the 90s and triple digits. and we're talking about fire danger in inland areas, especially through this afternoon. there's an air quality advisory for the north bay and the south bay. you can see so far the aqi index scale shows it is moderate. but when you look at santa clara valley, still unhealthy above that 100 mark, especially for sensitive groups for today we had a little bit of that smoke mixing in but also this high pressure plays a role in this as well. we're already at 88 degrees i

meteorologist vianey arana joins us with a look at your microclimate forecast. yesterday turned out to be quite lovely. >> it really was. it was nice. it wasn't too hot and we are going to see a little bit more of a warming temperature trend heading into the weekend. look at the sky over san francisco. >> wow. >> looks at the fog. that's live right now. i will step out of the way to enjoy the view of the rolling fog. 56 degrees right now and we are expecting another lovely day. it might be hazy at times, though. san jose, 85 degrees right now. we're going to get plenty of sunshine through the interior valleys. if you live around the coastline or the bay we'll stay in the 50s, not going to get too warm but in the interior valleys we're at 57 degrees right now. take a look at what happens around your lunch hour. bumping up to 87, 89 degrees and we are expecting to see some 90s in today's forecast. we're going to have high pressure roll if and talk about what that means for your forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> all right. see you soon. thanks. >>> the recall

vianey arana has been keeping her eye on air quality so far. how is it looking for us today? >> you know, the thing is that because it's so hot, that's also playing a component, so we had a shift in the winds. they definitely called down which is sort of what helped. the tahoe basin air quality here. a spare the air alert is issued. when the aqi goes above 101. north bay coast, south bay, according to the air quality management district. here are your numbers. moderate for the most part, but if you look at the east bay, santa clara valley, above the 101 mark which is why we are under a spare the air alert. there could be moments where we see areas of clearing and then we see other areas with haze. around the coastline it's going to be a mix of cloud cover and haze. keep that in mind through the afternoon because the high pressure is expected to linger not just for today, but the entire week which is going to keep conditions hot and dry. even though it's not windy there will be elevated fire danger expected to remain. hopefully we'll get ber clearing with the air quality into

want to go to vianey arana has been tracking those conditions there and the air conditions here in the bay area. how are things looking so far, vianey? >> we get that drifting smoke, of course, but pair that with the high pressure and you get a combination of really just gunk in the air, a ton of pollutants which is why the spare the air alert is in effect. we're talking 90s, triple digits, but let's go over some of that air quality. so first let's head over to the tahoe basin and see how it's doing up there. of course, this is what we're seeing some of the worst air quality. just a reminder, a spare the air alert is issued when the aqi, air quality index, hits above 101. according to the bay area air quality management district that's what we're seeing in some spots. take a look at the tahoe basin, unhealthy air continues. it's going to take a while but the winds have significantly calmed down which has certainly helped in the fight against that fire there. now as far as here locally we're going to continue to see some of the smoke push into our region, moving south into the bay area.

. >>> let's get a check of that air quality in the forecast with our vianey arana. >> we are under aimate weather alert because of the spare the air alert that is in effect for today through tomorrow. we're dealing with some hotter temperatures but also really dry conditions. a couple things to keep in mind. if you live in the valleys expect to see mid and upper 90s, 97, 98, triple digits some parts through the interior. now the hottest day is you expected to be today through tomorrow so two days of really hot temperatures and then even more near the bay we'll see hazy skies. what we're seeing is a little bit of cloud cover around the coast, pair that with smoky conditions and we are expecting to keep at least for the next two days unfortunately some of the unhealthy air quality. current temperatures right now as you head out the door in the 50s, but take a look at this afternoon. so we're going to see a temperature change right now it's not very drastic. we're a couple degrees cooler in san francisco because of the marine layer but by this afternoon, here's a look at your daytime hi

, 9/11, 20 years later and then on nbc bay area watch "today in the bay" with kira klapper and vianey arana. that starts at 8:00 a.m. >>> 4:38 right now and an up expected twist. we'll take you to the dixie fire burning right now and we know that it continues to grow there in lassen county. there are more evacuation orders for folks who are living near hoover flat reservoir. the flames burned another 15,000 or so acres yesterday and the area is now up to nearly 1500 square miles. the fire is about 60% contained at this point. we want to go to meteorologist kari hall as we were driving into the station, i know scott saw some lightning i saw lightning in the south bay. last year when this happened we were like this is a cool light show but now we know how serious it is. >> absolutely. and so when you see those lightening strikes you think where did that hit and could it have basically hit some dry vegetation and some of the hills that we have. that's what we've been watching for here. as we get a look at storm ranger and some of the areas that are dealing with some of the lightning strikes, s
