to meteorologist vianey arana who has been tracking those conditions. sometimes you think all that snow is great for the skiers. whoa, a little bit too much. >>> you have to wait for the conditions to improve. you saw the wind, that camera did a nice job of showcasing how dangerous it can get up there. we have a high wind warning. this is in effect and i want to turn your attention to the color hue colors, the 50-mile-an-hour winds and we have plenty of that across the sierra. that will remain in place until pretty much this afternoon. we could see this be extended. if you are looking for a travel window, today will not be your day to head up to the sierra potentially leading into maybe early tomorrow you might get a better chance, but even then a lot of ice on the roads and i do also want to show you the winter storm warning in effect and to give you an idea this is the start of what we will be seeing the next several days. i took this all the way through january 6th when it comes to our next series of storms that will move in. if you notice kingvale,

we will start with meteorologist, vianey arana. she has a timeline on the next few storms. >> it's a few for sure. that's going to guide us all the way into 2023. today's storm isn't going to be as heavy with rain as we saw a tuesday, but it's just enough to be moderate at times. san francisco, 49 degrees right now. in san josÉ, it's about 50. we are getting breaks from the rain right now. look at our mobile doppler radar storm ranger, and it's pushing into san josÉ that is taking a break, and san mateo and san francisco, and as we continue to see the scattered showers activity, we are expecting that to be more widespread between the hours of 3:00 p.m. tonight into early tomorrow, friday morning. the heavy rain, the area of concern will move in friday into early saturday morning, and that's the new year's eve start to your day. we will see localized flooding, and let's get a look at where today in the bay's bob redell is. he's live in fremont. officials are urging the public as we get more wet weather in the coming days. >> reporte

meteorologist vianey arana is in for kari this week. when does the rain come back? >>> our little break from the rain is right now into tonight. the rain does make its way back in tonight, but the storm is going to be a little different compared to yesterday's. i also want to point out that our temperatures are currently running a few degrees colder compared to yesterday. we woke up with mostly 40s, low 50s. we have a couple 30s on the map now in napa. 38 degrees. livermore, 39. behind that system we're seeing the colder temperatures and we are expecting to see, of course, some of the early morning fog. we'll see some clearing of the fog and moving ahead expect to see the temperatures warm up into the 50s. then we'll start to see more above average temperatures for this time of year. low visibility down into livermore and look at morgan hill, down to less than a mile visibility. the weekend ahead, it's new year's eve. mike? >>> vianey, we're looking at, like you said, much better conditions for driving right now this morning. right now live it up. it's the green sen

right now we want to turn to meteorologist vianey arana. of course you have been tracking this. >>> as of friday into saturday, over 60% of the u.s. was in some form of winter storm warning or advisory, and now as the bomb cyclone makes its exit what we will see behind it really cold temperatures, that lake wind-effect snow will continue. let's look at satellite radar. we are seeing, of course, the impacts as well in through parts of st. louis. take a look at chicago. you might have seen all the videos come out of seattle as well. as far as the bay area goes, we are also monitoring our own system which is the reason we are under a microclimate weather alert. you can seep the development sweep in. one of the big e impacts is the fog. you can see down to a quarter of a mile visibility. less than two miles in concord. but heading into tonight and into tuesday morning, a closer look at what i will be guiding you through. rain and wind with the possibility of seeing as much as 5 inches for some of the mountain areas, and it will get very gusty,

meteorologist vianey arana joins us now. vianey, talk about this storm. they're calling it like the arctic bomb or arctic cyclone. that's even worse, even bigger. >> i know. it's basically a very rapidly intensifying storm, so it quickly develops, dropping atmospheric pressure, over 24 millibars in just 24 hours. that rapid intensification is what brings on those gusty winds, that blowing snow and a lot of it. you can see the location now. now starting to trek its move east, more into further north canada. but we'll still see some of those impacts through areas like chicago, toronto, and also into parts of the east coast as well. the national weather service as of this morning say that over 60% of the u.s. population was under some form of winter weather advisory. what does that mean? that include anywhere from that cold arctic air blast, those strong gusty winds and that lake-effect snow, which have brought on some power outages. significant icing, and of course those impacts of travel from the midwest to the northeast. as we head toward saturday's trave

turning to meteorologist vianey arana.oming storm we're expected to get. >> lots of rain, lots of wind, lots of sierra snow and a lot of advisories. right now the impact for your commute right now is going to be the fog. temperatures in the 40s so no freeze warnings or anything like that in effect. you can see that atmospheric river setting up nicely. it will make its move in to the north bay starting at around 7:00 tonight, right around dinner and then widespread overnight. just to give you an idea we're not just tracking one storm, we're talking about a series of potentially five storms to end the week leading into the first week of january as well. the impacts will kick up. overnight a wind advisory goes into effect. in addition to that we're talking about flood watches that are in place especially for the ben lomond area. 3 to 7 inches in total all week, maybe even higher for the santa cruz mountains. there's a high wind warning. we are keeping that active weather pattern into the start of 2023. how are we looking on t

tracking it all has been meteorologist vianey arana.e a look at some of the totals of rain. >>> although it was pretty quick moving, it dumped a lot of rain especially for the mountain areas. and the concern when it dumps a lot of rain on mountains is the potential for run-off, debris flow, and of course the burn scars. right now when you look at the map notice 6 inches in mt. tam. that's where we saw some of the highest totals. anywhere from about an inch to 2 inches, concord a little over an inch, napa and san jose where you probably noticed it was more south bay focused nearly an inch and a half. our current is 145% of the average. this is not taking into account the snow we got from the storm yesterday and the additional snow. this will look even better by the time the weekend storm is over heading into the first week of january and, of course, we'll bring that you update as soon as we have that. as far as your lake tahoe forecast, there is an active winter storm warning in effect so travel up there is still not recommended though t

we can expect more issues this week. >> let's check in with meteorologist vianey arana.n tracking another round of rain. >> and that explains a lot of the impact. there were wind advisories in effect, flood watches in effect and look at how much rain we got in some of the videos. in santa cruz we got a little over 4 inches, nearly 5 inches of rain for the highest peaks. 6 inches of rain. meanwhile in the rest of the bay area some spots including oakland got 3 inches of rain. it did pack a punch. and so did the wind. contra costa, 76 miles per hour. look at that, 60 miles per hour. the wind advisories were allowed to expire as of 9:00 a.m. yesterday but we'll see the wind pick up again tonight. not as gusty. the incoming storm tonight, we're expecting from a quarter of an inch to just under half. a lot less rain out of this system but it could still be messy. we have a lot of ponding water. >> we also have road work to be done and drains to be cleared. we're looking at flashing lights and input an arrow so folks can take a look. headlights are blurring out our short. nort

let's bring in forecasters, vianey arana and cinthia pimentel.laladies. >> not a great day to be out on the water. there's a gale warning in place. we're going to be seeing that choppy water and scanning all of it is the mobile doppler radar symptom ranger on top of san bruno mountain. the camera's shaky because it's windy up there, cinthia. we've been looking at this storm system, now you can see a lot of sierra snow but also a lot of pockets of rain out there. >> with storm ranger, this is a function on the nbc bay area app. you can track the rain. it gives you really good warnings of when the rain will hit where you live. >> it does a nice job. it's completely free. download that. we'll be tracking where the rain will hit. you can expect widespread rain. right now we're getting a breakthrough livermore and castro valley. san jose getting a slight breakthrough the majority of downtown. we're also talking about the wind, though. >> yeah, the wind gusts could be anywhere from 35 to 50 miles an hour on the mountain tops. we're going to be tracking

but first meteorologist vianey arana is tracking the storm's path. is this a slow-moving storm or are we talking with a wide-range storm in size? >> it was widespread across the bay area but a quick-moving storm. we got roof rain in a short period of time. the good news is we've already seen the majority of the heaviest portion of the rain and now it's going to continue to clear out. 59 degrees right now. we're going to be in the 50s. it's going to remain cloudy and clear. let's talk about satellite radar. notice, north bay getting a lot of clear, they're going to get a break from the rain. more focused now toward the south bay, the santa cruz mountains and through central california and l.a., now officially on deck. if you had any plans to travel down to southern california over the next 24 hours, that's definitely going to be a big impact. i mentioned that the bulk of the rain has already managed to push through, and we've already seen a decent amount of rainfall, especially for some of the mountain areas. i'll have a closer look at updated rain to

. >>> meteorologist vianey arana is here with more on the jolt it sent through the bay area overnight. you and i, neither of us felt it. as we mentioned, marcus washington our co-worker did. so did our boss. >> although it was considered mostly a smaller earthquake, there is a reason why a lot of people felt it. now, this was along the hayward fault, which is considered one of the most active and potentially one of the most dangerous faults across the bay area. it was a magnitude 3.6 with a depth of about 4 miles. considered a shallow earthquake. shallow earthquakes are anywhere from 0 to 70 miles deep. the reason why the hayward fault is considered potentially one of the most dangerous is because it runs through the heart of oakland at almost 45 miles along extending all the way down through milpitas. so it's a heavy populated area, and for that reason, we have to keep a close eye on it. now, this was a strike fault and it was a right lateral fault, similar to the san andreas fault. keep in mind, these are all interconnected with the san andreas fault line. the last major earthquake

but first, meteorologist vianey arana is tracking the storm's path.of the storm? >>> it will depend on where you live. we're in the thick of it now. in the north bay you saw heavier pockets. in the south bay and santa cruz we have about an hour and a half to go before we see that bull's eye about 8:30 to 10:00. you can see the satellite radar showing the atmospheric river. now this is a very fast moving system so by the afternoon we're going to see the majority of this rain cleared out to the south. a zoom-in of mobile doppler radar, zooming in through san jose about to get a line of heavy pockets gusty with rain at times. we have rain at times but a lot of it is going to be in san francisco and the south bay. a change in the weather pattern. it is saying this is one of the most active endings to december that they've seen since 2005. >> we always feel like it's the worst. >>> right on the lens north 280. through san jose, the volume of traffic not so bad today. conditions are the caution point and more rain coming in as the volume starts to build. th

meteorologist vianey arana is here with more on the jolts it sent through the bay area this morning. important that we keep a close eye on this. so notice this red line that you see here, it just kind of depicts where that fault line lies. now, the reason it could potentially be one of the most dangerous faults according to seismologists is because it runs directly through a heavy populated area. we're talking oakland, fremont, hayward, all the way down through milpitas. so when it comes to location, it's definitely running right through major cities where there are over 2 million people. now, as far as the magnitude, it was a 3.6 registered by the usgs with a depth of about 4 miles. that is considered a shallow earthquake. shallow earthquakes anywhere from 0 to 70 miles. as far as the history and where it was felt when it comes to the hayward fault, it was felt as far as up to some parts of santa rosa into the majority of the east bay and some parts through the south bay. the hayward fault is considered to be one of the most active and the most dangerous. and here's a closer look at

meteorologist vianey arana is here to tell us about it. this is incredible there is more research being done now to figure out what happened. >> that's what happens. the research is continuous and the eruption that we saw from the mostly submerged of course volcano is one of the most powerful we've seen. launching as much as 4 million metric tons of water vapor into space. i want to show you this image taken a day after the eruption. january 16th. it erupted on january 15th. these aren't clouds. this is smoke that was captured from the eruption and a couple quick facts. tunga island is 5,000 miles away from san francisco that gets you thinking about the tsunami advisor and the eruption causes it and unfortunately, it was a deadly tsunami. the advisory was triggered along the california coast and if you wonder what the difference is between a tsunami and tsunami by a volcano, more common. it happens when that large volcano event does a vertical push of sea water so you can see it illustrated here and water going up. as the wave spreads into

meteorologist vianey arana is with me now who is also a nasa solar system ambassador. it's great to talk to you about this. i'm wondering, what are scientists trying to get out of this mission? what are they trying to learn? >> most folks know that nasa has 24 satellites and instruments already in orbit studying how the earth works as a system and this satellite, specifically, will help researchers measure the height of water and its movement. that includes earth's lakes, rivers and reservoirs which will help us understand the effects of climate change and the effects it's a having on our freshwater bodies. the reason this is important, according to nasa, our seas have observed more than 90% of the excess heat trapped in our atmosphere. researchers think that a lot of heat and the extra carbon dioxide is observed in oceans. it will be a key in figuring out whether there is a limit to the ocean's ability to absorb the heat's emission. >> satellite has a lot to do. i'm wondering what features does the satellite actually have to get all this information? >> there is somet
