meteorologist vianey arana has been tracking the storm for us. vianey, how is it looking right now?we're starting to see some of those cells get a little stronger and this is where you could see the majority of the system using satellite radar. if i zoom this in using our mobile doppler radar stormranger, you can see some of the heavier rain just off the coast. let's take a closer look to see when this does move in. around campbell, notice at around 6:20 we'll get heavier downpours, 6:05 around boulder creek and alameda around 6:25. the rain you see is going to ramp up some of the rain rates within the next hour or so. what to expect for today, because this system looks like it's moving out rather quickly, the rain totals are down a little bit, which is great because we have the flood concern. the soil is extremely saturated, flood watches are in effect. for monterey county, they are under a flood warning. there is a potential for landslides and also as the winds kick up, around 10:00 a.m. especially, through noon, we could see the potential for downed trees and power outages becaus

. >>> let's bring in meteorologist vianey arana now. this has been an emergency. you have been watching these maps for years. how is the report? >> october 1st, 2022, according to the national weather service, there have been 29 atmospheric rivers since then. some of them weaker and some of them stronger than others. compare that to today, and you can see, 99% of the bay area is drought-free. so that's really impressive. only 36% of the entire state of california is still under some form of drought. but so far, we have surpassed our seasonal rainfall average quicker than we normally do. >> quite the change, that before and after, in just a matter of months. >> and you know what? we have more rain to come. enjoy the sunshine tomorrow and saturday. if you notice in the green here where the color change is that puts us well above average. looking at the extended outlook it doesn't look like we will end march on an active weather pattern, so that means more rain. but sierra snowpack, this plays a key role in our drought as well. it typically peaks around april 1st. lo

let's check in with meteorologist vianey arana. >> we are going to be seeing rain and also wind. the wind will be my biggest concern as we are expecting to see gusty conditions, upwards of 60 plus miles per hour. i want to show you where the majority of the system is. notice, here we are, northern california, and you can see down through southern california, they still have a bit of that moisture tapped. it looks like we will not be the ones getting the impact of that atmospheric river. l.a. will be dealing with flooding concerns through the the afternoon, and high rain rates per hour. as far as we go, we're going to sort of get more of the storm low pressure system that's still going to bring rain but the wind will start to howl and kick up into the afternoon. you can see where some of the rain is already starting to move in, monterey, we do have light rain that's beginning to move into santa rosa, san rafael, light rain into san francisco. it's beginning to now make its approach into san jose, and the santa cruz mountains will be on deck. rain totals, let's take a closer look.

we want to bring in meteorologist vianey arana for a look at those current wind speeds in the bay area, our most recent update. pg&e said gusts yesterday reached close to 100 miles per hour. >> they did. that's above hurricane-force winds. >> it was wild, right? >> it was. >> now we're seeing calm. >> there's difference. >> after the storm. >> we still have a couple spots like up in the higher peaks around diablo. look at peak winds we had yesterday. you mentioned the 100-plus. sfo over 70 miles per hour. let's get to the microclimate forecast because we are expecting to see a much calmer weather pattern. this will be helpful for us because we don't want to see the wind gusts. notice the system is now out of the area. we're seeing clear conditions and calmer accompanying that and dry weather and sunshine. this will be helpful for us because we've seen so much rain. we're due for a break. we still have that humidity and the mugginess because of that subtropical moisture tap. it was a warmer system, but if you notice, we're still in the 50s, but it will feel cooler and more comfortable.

meteorologist vianey arana is in for kari this morning. can see from the screen that the rain is still hovering around. >> we have the system working its way out but still bringing down rain. you can see it on stormranger. i'm going to zoom this in closer to the north bay where you can see areas that are finally catching a break. that includes santa rosa, novato. but if you're driving through richmond, fairfield, concord, san francisco, even down through the south bay, you are going to get caught up in some light to moderate, even heavy downpours through the santa cruz mountains where you can see oranges and yellows. because we are still seeing rain, there could still be the potential of flooding for some creeks. however, i did look at the latest forecast for the san francisquito creek that we were monitoring closely. it does look like at last check it was at 10 feet and it will begin to cree seed around 11:00 a.m. if the system tries to stall out, that could once again become a problem. we're not fully in the clear just yet. the wind spee

meteorologist vianey arana is tracking what we can expect this morning. right now, vianey, only lingering showers. >> we still have activity but the weather pattern will settle down as we head into the afternoon and into the evening. but i do want to show you, we're seeing pretty good rotation. what happens is as this rotates it actually feeds in the moisture. so we can expect to keep that rain pretty much through the first half of our morning. stormranger right now, mobile doppler radar, scanning the skies in san carlos, san jose, livermore, pretty widespread through fairfield as well. down through the santa cruz mountains. now, if you live south of the golden gate bridge, it will be a lot slower to clear. we have rain activity that's going to linger, especially for the mountains. here is a closer look at what to expect. we will see breezy to windy conditions, but nowhere near as gusty as yesterday. the gusty winds and the wind warnings have expired as the storm begins to move out. looking ahead, we do have a break, but a second storm in our seven-day for

meteorologist vianey arana has the latest update on the drought monitor. vianey? >>> after a record dry start to 2022, the active weather pattern of 2023 has proven beneficial to the drought monitor. all of that rain and sierra snow. let's take a closer look at the comparison of where we started at the beginning of the water year in september of 2022. 88% of california was still under the extreme category with 46% in the exceptional category. that is the worst of the categories. now today we have removed the red zone in the state of california and a lot of these places are now drought free. we have surpassed our seasonal rainfall. now just two weeks ago almost all of california was under some form of drought. as of this morning, parts of california's coast and even in through the valleys are drought free. plus we still have more rain on the way and a healthy sierra snowpack, 192% of statewide average. this also doesn't count the last storm that we saw. this gets released every thursday so hopefully only more good news to come. >> thanks, vianey. what does this mea
