meteorologist vianey arana is here with us now.ng pretty good. >> we're catching a break here in northern california. but that system is heavily impacting parts of central and southern california. this could have some impact on you. guidance locally and for folks headed to southern california. audrey is right. it has been a nice day overall. nice to get some clearing in the skies but still seeing the cloud cover out there. let's take a look at satellite radar. you can see just how far south now that system is currently located. right over the bay area, we have cloud cover. scattered activity into central california. you might see scattered activity over gilroy. if i zoom this back out, you will notice the grapevine especially. look at this. right through the frazier park stretch. a lot of la is under flood watches and warnings right now. probably going to remain that way for the remainder of the day. so be cautious of that. as far as any advisories here, we have a coastal flood advisory for the highlighted areas. this is in effect

let's bring in our vianey arana. what can we expect the rest of tonight and into tomorrow? >> still seeing some of those moderate to heavy at times downpours. my concern into the next couple of hours is because it's already dark, we could see some ponding, especially in the underpasses and the freeways. so please be careful for spinout possibilities there. flood advisories in effect through 9:00 p.m. tonight. right now it's coming down pretty good. what to expect. so we keep that high surf and coastal flood warning all the way through tomorrow. even though the swell is going down now, it picks up again especially between 6:00 and 10:00 during high tide. tonight that flood advisory will remain in place until 9:00 p. it stays moderate to heavy until about 9:00. looking ahead, we are talking about rain chances again for the first week of 2024. coming up, i will have a closer look at potential rain totals and a look at your new year's eve forecast to see how that will be shaping out into the new year. >> vianey, thank you. >>> we're in the midst of a series of weather related i

let's bring in our meteorologist, vianey arana. a lot of issues, changes, and updates as we head into the next several days. >> we have. the high pressure is essentially what's causing the issues when it comes to that air quality because it sort of traps everything at a closer surface level. the light winds aren't helping mix any of that out. air quality from the north bay to san francisco based on the aqi scale is 105 to 110. it's unhealthy for sensitive groups. we're expecting to continue to see that leading into saturday as well as we continue to have this high pressure sitting over the bay area. now, notice north bay, coast and bay, east bay stretching down through santa clara valley, we're going to see that aqi above 100 all the way through saturday. this means the spare the aair alert is extended through saturday. the daytime highs will be in the 70s, which means the overnight lows aren't going to get too cold as far as your sunday forecast goes. this is when we're going to see that rain begin to move in. that's when there's

our meteorologist, vianey arana, is tracking that.'re also tracking the sierra snowpack. >> that's one of the biggest questions from viewers, rain and the storm, does it mean we're getting snow? i'll get to that in a second. we are seeing scattered light activity. we have a decent amount of light to moderate rainfall in mountain view and san jose, saratoga, and of course there goes the wintery mix. this is a subtropical system, so it is a little warmer, which means we haven't seen as much snow. if i take this through december 20th, notice 3 to 4 inches, so not much in the way of snow. and our peaks right now definitely haven't seen anything compared to what we saw last year around this time. so the north is about 31%, central 28%. what does this mean statewide? just to give you an idea for comparison purposes, today we're at about 25% of statewide, last year at this time we were at 182% of that sierra snowpack statewide because we had a series of really cold systems that pushed through, bringing record snowfall to the sierra. you can

let's bring in i'm meteorologist, vianey arana . you warned us about the waves yesterday . >> the influence with the swell and approaching storm will continue to increase the intensity. even though we have seen the waves back off, they are still intense. here's what to expect headed into friday and here's a closer look, you will notice the purple and the light pink color, 20 to 25 feet likely into the 30 foot mark. the dangerous surfer back up after the high tide on friday but even so because the approaching storm, we do have another lineup of 15 to 20 foot plus waves headed into saturday and the reason for that is because of the incoming system and also we have the storm system lightening up in the pacific headed into next week so there will be a coastal flood advisory in effect in addition to the high surf warning at the flood advisory accent until 2:00 pm on saturday for the entire coastline. we will talk more about the potential for flooding and when the high wind advisory kicks in , coming up. >>> messy moments along the coastl

let's bring in meteorologist vianey arana. she has been keeping an eye on the storm.nd we are talking high surf at least another 24 hours. >> absolutely. with this approaching system now, that is going to help boost that swell. and we can expect to see another morning into high tide with those 20 to 30-foot waves for friday morning. so be mindful of this. this system making its approach. the cold front will sweep in starting tomorrow. really picking up into the afternoon. along with it, we are monitoring the wind as well. right now, we have scattered activity just off the coast. the heavier rain moves in late tomorrow night. but because of this, we still have a coastal flood advisory. now this will be in effect until 2:00 p.m. on saturday. that means any of these low lying areas near the coast, saturday, we expect the waves to kind of back off just a bit. still above that 15-foot mark. can quickly sweep you right back into that water. be mindful. localized flooding may be possible especially for the low lying trails. we will talk timing and intensity of the next storm

meteorologist vianey arana is here. >> it stands for conference of parties and 28 is its 28th year.cially ending 2023 as one of the hottest ever recorded, just to give you an idea. scientists say temperatures will continue on the rise. nearly 200 nations have agreed to transition away from fossil fuel. let's talk about what was going on. they were many questions because the ceo is with an oil company. they would do so in a just, orderly and equitable matter. they are not being forced. the goal is to get to zero by 2050. this is the first time a global climate deal has called to curb the use of fossil fuel which is a win. its impact will depend in large part if the country takes the necessary steps to implement it. language used within the agreement has critics saying it is not enough. it still gives fossil fuels on space to keep working. scientific research says the use of fossil fuels is a major contributor to our warming planet. i spoke to a nonprofit that advocates for a clean energy future and what are his key points. >> the outcome from cop 28 is completely historic and not far

meteorologist vianey arana is joining us. she's keeping track of how it's looking out there. >> it's a rough commute. any time we see any rain, but when the rain really starts to pick up, that's when it can get really dangerous because it's dark out. we talked about the lightning and you saw images over san francisco. you can see we've still got some lightning strikes off the coast and that is going to be a possibility through this afternoon. right now we've got rain moving through san jose, notice santa cruz, we just had a decent amount of rain push through san francisco. this is going to continue pretty much through the 10:00 hour. we'll catch a break and then we did see another band pick up in the model that did show some heavier rain at around 1:00. i want to show you, this is the last 24 hours. this is sunday's rain. it doesn't include the rain we're seeing now or the rain we're going to see in the upcoming days. but notice on sunday we did get a couple hundredths of an inch, some of the heavier pockets were in santa ros

now to our meteorologist, vianey arana keeping track of the waves and the storm.s there any more coming this weekend? >> we are just getting started. the instability in the atmosphere is enough to set us up for a rainy farewell to 2023 with a break in between before 2024. let's get right to that microclimate forecast because it is still coming down heavy and a lot of spot and if you will be out driving tonight please be careful. it is very dark. we have a lot of ponding water out there. you can see far how it extends to california. this is moving east and will continue to do that. we have light activity to san francisco. we do have heavier areas especially through livermore, san jose is pretty moderate if i extend this into richmond, notice concorde also seeing rain and enter oakland as well. extending is further south we do still have a flood advisory that was set to expire as of 12:15, but it looks like now the national weather service has decided that we are in the clear as far as flood concerns for now with the rain rates, however, the swell is expected to rem

our meteorologist vianey arana joins us now with five keynotes .about the connection between historic heat and climate change. >> anytime we have seen this headline, which has been a big one, you're probably thinking why it matters, can we see this again, what are the impacts? there's a really great study. let's talk about the first topic which is the record itself. as the planet warms it's everything from extreme storms to wildfires, flooding. as we have seen, drought conditions. during the hottest month on record of july 2023 81% of people in the planet experienced heat made more likely by human caused climate change. people around the world including europe, china, northern africa and the u.s. to name a few. it's definitely been a rough 2023 when it comes to those. >> what's the financial impact of those weather events? >> probably one of the most costly aspects around the world. the average time between billion-dollar weather and climate disasters has dropped since 1980. it basically means we are seeing those costly weather events or often. in

meteorologist vianey arana has a look at that this morning. >> we saw a decent band move through thiss with those cells. we've got plenty of instability and we're keeping the possibility of thunderstorm activity through the afternoon. we've got scattered activity through the north bay, san francisco, scattered through san jose, some of the heavier pockets trekking east. there is still a flood advisory. i want to remind weeks it's until 8:45 for highlighted areas, which includes santa rosa, napa, parts of san francisco, stretching through mill valley, also parts of oakland. we're talking about the possibility of urban and small stream flooding and ponding water on the roadways. expect to keep this on and off again pattern through the afternoon. it is humid. daytime highs are expected to climb into the 60s because this is a subtropical moisture tap. through the afternoon, san jose 66 degrees, some of the highest rain totals will be for the higher elevations, also coastal mountains 1 to 2 inches could be a possibility. >> thank you. we'll have another local news update in 30 minutes. see
