our climate in crisis special intjo vianey arana: thank you for joining us, i'm meteorologist vianey ana. monday is the start of earth week, and here at nbc bay area, we're tracking our "climate in crisis." it's been a wild winter. the sierras saw a record amount of snowfall that created dangerous conditions for resorts, people getting up to tahoe, and of course, residents. let's gain some insight. the latest winter season brought a nice boost we were looking for. when we started in january 2023, the snowpack was sitting around 30%, but after a series of storms, this is what it looks like as spring unfolds. now, for perspective, the sierra range is more than 400 miles long. its alpine region covers a large part of the state's inland territory. and currently, northern sierra is at 125%.

so let's go ahead and bring in our meteorologist vianey arana live on location this afternoon for us. hi, diana. what's going on out there? hey, audrey. you know, it's a good day when they send the meteorologists outside to talk about the weather. you said it. it's a little bit cooler. we've got a light breeze going on. and if you look at the clouds, they're definitely in sight. we had that marine layer showing up around the coastline. so temperature wise, we're doing great. now i'll let you know why i'm here in a second. but first let's take a look at your microclimate forecast so you can take a closer idea of the temperatures heading into tonight and of course heading into tomorrow. so notice by about 10:00, overnight lows are going to fall into those 50s for san francisco. 55, san jose 57. as you wake up into tomorrow, similar conditions, but eventually into the afternoon. we will stay in that cooling pattern. we're talking mid 60s either around the coastline or in through inland areas. the good news, though, is that cooling pattern will eventually warm up a cold front is going to

meteorologist vianey arana joins us on how the loophole is making more waste. >> i think when people were looking for plastic bags, they were hoping to produce the amount of plastic. what ended up happening is we made more durable plastic. we weren't looking for durable plastic, we were looking for less. the plan to reduce waste and get use of single-use plastic bags has a loophole getting in the way of a green future. there was a section that allowed grocery stores and retailers to charge a dime for a plastic bag. stores then created thicker and heavier plastic bags intended for customers to reuse. many don't think of the bags as reusable so it's creating more waste. i spoke with the director for a company that advocates for environmental solutions. here is what they found. >> it has circumvented the intent by mass producing thicker plastic bags they claim are exempt from the law because they can technically meet the law's requirements for a reusable bag. because of that, there are plastic bags that really don't look like reusable bags. they look like they're designed to be single u
