vic? >> reporter: well, as amy hollyfield said, the protesters are planning a series of rallies tonight. one of them is expected to be right here in front of the police department. the other at the plaza in front of oakland city hall. the mayor just finished a news conference with the police chief and basically the mayor had nothing but praise, as did chief wendt, for the officers last night for showing what they called tremendous restraint in the face of a lot of taunts. and of course, being the target of projectiles like rocks, bricks, things like that. the chief said at its height there was some 1,500 to 2,000 protesters at various locations and some of his officers suffered injuries. the most serious, he said, was a concussion which required treatment at a hospital. some 43 demonstrators were arrested, some for looting stores. ten of them, ten of those stores hit along one block right next to or near the police department. the chief said the late response of the officers to the looting

. >> abc 7 news reporter vic lee joins us with more on that. >> reporter: well, as you can see behind me, there is more traffic here on montgomery and market. we are also told that there are more riders at the montgomery b.a.r.t. station. what we have not seen is the crunch of riders there and that may be because a lot of people left early, as soon as the parade left their vantage point. b.a.r.t. was gearing up today to carry hundreds of thousands of people. they also ran their rush hour service all day using all available trains. they also had 100 extra workers at b.a.r.t. stations to help riders. now, other transport agencies also tried to meet the parade's demand. muni added six metro shuttles. the ferries at larkspur were leaving as soon as they were filled. but now it looks like a perfect storm for some problems this evening. you know, the ceremonies ending so late, certainly does not help things. there is critical mass here in the city tonight, that usually starts at about 6:00. that means a lot of bicyclists on the streets of san francisco. it's also halloween. that means a lot

let's begin with abc 7 news reporter vic lee, who talked with city leaders about what it will take to prevent another night of vandalism in oakland. >> reporter: the mayor and police chief held a news conference, briefed reporters this afternoon here at the hall of justice, and they praise their officers for showing such restraint last night. the chief did admit he could not have prevented the protesters from taking over interstate 580 because the crowd was just too large, even if he had gotten mutual aid early. he also said that the late response, if i may, the late response to the looting was because his officers were everywhere. they were spread thin and they just couldn't be at this particular location. but the chief said he was pleased with the strategy last night, because the demonstration was mostly peaceful. the rally in front of city hall was loud, boisterous and peaceful. when protesters began marching, a few smashed windows and sprayed graffiti on buildings. some marchers stopped others from vandalizing. their numbers grew as they got closer to interstate 580. they blocked

abc 7 news reporter vic lee joins us now. >> reporter: police need help from the public. the suspects are still out there somewhere. you know that about 60% of all robberies in san francisco involve cell phones but rarely do these robberies end up deadly. homicide inspectors and patrol officers combed the neighborhood looking for more evidence that could lead to arrests. numerous homes on this street have security cameras which could identify the killers. michael marquez was shot to death shortly after midnight here on henry street in the dubose triangle. >> he was with his girlfriend and a group of people. they just had pizza. and he dropped his girlfriend off and was on his way home to my house. >> reporter: marquez had been staying with maria twyman's family. he never made it back as he and two friends walked down henry street, five people jumped out of a car and robbed them at gunpoint. they shot marquez, then took his smartphone and backpack. as word of the deadly robbery got out in this quiet tree-lined street, neighbors responded with alarm. >> shocking. really, th

abc 7 news reporter vic lee is in the newsroom with a follow-up to a story we first reported on mondaye up most of the robberies in san francisco, but rarely do they end up this violent. police need the public's help. the parents want the public's help in finding the killers. >> killed, murdered is not something i like to put around my brother. it's more that he's not with me anymore. >> reporter: carrena is michael's sister. michael was shot to death as he and two friends walked down a quiet street in the triangle early monday morning. five people jumped out of a car and robbed them at gun point. they shot marquez and took his smartphone and backpack. his parents were told at the hospital he had passed. >> it's so hurtful. so painful. my wife and i just have been crying a lot. and i feel like there is no tears left in me. >> he was a very loving person. a person that would do anything for his family and friends first over himself. >> reporter: a police source tells us marquez may have been shot because he resisted his attackers' demands. his caring persona may explain why he did that.

abc 7 news reporter vic lee is live near the scene with the latest. >> reporter: as you said, this is willow road and middlefield road t shooting happened right over there past the yellow police tape. the tarp-covered body is still on the street. details are slim but this is what police are telling us. let's go directly to sky 7 hd. at about 12:30, menlo park police responded to a call of a suspicious person in the area when officers arrived, they found a burglary in progress. the suspect ran according to police, officers chased them. a taser was fired. the police say a suspect pulled out a gun. that's when officers shot him. we don't know if the suspect actually fired his weapon. police say they did recover his gun. one officer was sent to the hospital. he apparently injured his foot or leg during the foot chase. police have yet to identify the suspect but investigators are still on the scene. i believe they are trying to notify next of kin. that is the very latest here from menlo park. of course, we will bring you more information as we get it. vic lee, abc 7 news. >> thank you for

. >> abc 7 news reporter vic lee joins us in alameda with the details. >> reporter: the chp held a post mortem if you will on wednesday night's sideshow which happened at the port of oakland. they say they issued 23 citations, confiscated guns, impounded cars, and they say they've got the goods. hard evidence to make arrests. these are some of the dozen or so cars impounded by the chp from the big sideshow. this one towed to a pick and pull, was destroyed by fire. >> a stolen vehicle in the crowd was lit on fire while officers were moving into the crowd. >> reporter: the chp believes there may have been firearms inside which fueled the flames. officers singled out the driver. as you can see from sky 7 hd, it was a huge crowd of some 200 people here at the port of oakland. cars were doing doughnuts and other dangerous stunts with spectators just a few feet away. there was also a huge chp presence mobilized initially for another night of protests against the grand jury decision in ferguson. officers received a tip that a sideshow would occur later in the night. when it happened, the chp s

abc 7 news reporter vic lee is in the newsroom with the story tonight. >> they started selecting the at the federal building in san francisco. the two veteran officers are accused of corruption under the color of authority. the reported abuses happened between 2009 and 2011. in february, a federal grand jury indicted the two of criminal conspiracies that included stealing money, drugs and other items from suspects. a former officer ronaldo vargas seen in this security video pleaded guilty to similar charges and has promised to testify against his former colleagues. the department fired vargas for unrelated violations of department policy. the three-year federal investigation started when public defender released security video showing undercover police from southern station in residential hotels. three officers were indicted for violating suspect's rights under the color of law. the investigation extended to separate allegations that mission station officers were violating suspects' civil rights, resulting in the indictments. the public defender says the case is important and the pub
