. >> i am vicki liviakis. the unions representing workers say they will call for a strike for the second time this year if a deal is not reached by midnight tonight. kron four's philippe djegal is live at caltrans headquarters in oakland where negotiations resumed this morning and have continued throughout the day. philippe. >> reporter: it is a waiting game today. the chief negotiator says that there has been an agreement on several key issues but still no deal has been announced. the bart team loved the scene and a half said that they are or to wait until the unions are born to review the latest proposals. were they returned. the around 7:30 tonight. however, they did return and they did not address the media you take that however you would like. they are still optimistic that a deal will be reached but the clock is ticking. >> i think that we put out a good proposal. we feel good about where we are. bart still has questions to prevent a strike. >> we are still talking into and what we need to do and cautiou

and i'm vicki liviakis the weekend before a possible bart strike. that's if union members and management don't come to an agreement. kron 4's jeff bush is live at the cal trans building where negotiations are going on right now. jeff any progress? >> reporter: many people say that they are trying to put together a deal. however, there have been 150 bart buses on reserves. at nine different stations in the bay area will check back in 30 minutes to give you the latest updates. jeff bush, kron 4 news. >> there are a lot of people who told us, that bart's negotiations. and threats of a strike, have just gone on too long. and it's stressful that a deal still is not done. this drama actually started last april, when bart and its unions started working on a new contract. by late june, the negotiations had reached the breaking point. kron-4's charles clifford shows us what happened next. >> reporter: after failing to reach a compromise, bart's union workers walked off the job at 12:01 am on the morning of july 1st, shutting down the entire system. the strik

vicki, why has there been so much controversy about common core?think as you can tell from teachers not so much controversy. they're very aware of it, very positive about it and understand the challenges of implementing it. i think some of the controversy comes more from people who don't know about it yet, haven't heard about it and once they understand what these standards will do for students, that sort of worry about it dissipates. >> well, one of the big surprise, i think, is that how overwhelming some of the numbers were. your poll found that 74% of teachers said common core would require them to change their teaching practices, doesn't seem to worry them because only 8% are against it. at our education nation teacher town hall, a high school teacher addressed this problem. take a listen. >> we believe that our students should have standards, and the common core could work, but what we need are adequate resources, meaningful professional development and curriculum that's aloined to the common core. >> and that is the problem, isn't it, margery

nbc bay area's vicky nguyen broke the story and joins us with details. >> reporter: the d. a. says two inspectors in his bureau is looking into claims that samtrans inflated expenses and mishandled public money. samtrans oversees caltrain, samtrans buses and transportation authority. the district has a $500 million budget. the d.a. says the inquiry began after whistleblowers came forward to point out what they believed were illegal accounting practices. they said they were instructed to flaraudulentry report expens the district never had to ask for more taxpayer money. they said the district routinely paid for expenses out of improper accounts. these are claims samtrans denies. he says his inspectors are currently waiting for the results of samtrans'latest audit. >> what you have to have is an audit. you have to have the records to look at that. and an independent audit. in this case, that -- i'm not making any secret about it -- we're waiting for it. there's such an audit being done. it's supposed to be out within the next couple months and we want to see the independent audi
