vicky nguyen is here now with the results. vicky? >> reporter: janelle, lawmakers on the senate appropriations committee wanted to know where they were falling short. tonight we hear from the author of the senate report who says what our investigation found was spot-on. >> the overall takeaway is that it is true that dtsc has had some major problems. >> reporter: john hill is an investigator for the senate office of oversight and outcomes. >> it is important for there to be outside scrutiny. >> reporter: last july, three state senators ordered an investigation into allegations raised in golden wasteland, an expansive report by nonprofit consumer watch dogs. it alleged dtsc is failing to protect people and the environment from harmful toxins. >> it occurred to me that they lost their mission. >> reporter: spurred by our report and breaking story concerns, the investigative unit requested a series of public records, including 13 years of data showing where shipments of hazardous waste were headed. it turns out it was a mystery to dtsc.

. >> reporter: good morning, vicky. there have been a lot of victims of assault and robbery this year alone in downtown san jose. you may recall a few months ago, we reported about the takedown of a crew that police dubbed spangish language for snot nosed kid. the suspects were between the ages of 11 and 17. they would walk up to unsuspecting people in the downtown area and in the words of police, deliver a knockout punch. the suspects would then rob the victim. police arrested nine of the gang, but the violent assaults continued. and the mo was the same, people were being sucker punched as they walked through the downtown. the midnight shift began keeping a more vigilant eye own were able to catch the suspects after one of those violent robberies. this crew called itself the squad. it was four males, both adults and juveniles and for weeks, they wreaked havoc on innocent bystanders. >> come from behind or the side, just vicious, vicious blows. and once they're down on the ground, the assault continues. one individual i

there's more, right, vickie? >> the navy wrapped up its testing yesterday. we know that elevated levels of radiation were detected in two residential units and one storage shed. we first told you last month that crews found activities in buildings 1303, unit f. that was an unoccupied unit. but today we have learned that elevated levels of radiation were found in a home where someone lived. take a look at this photo. this was part of a presentation by the navy and was provided to us by a resident on treasure island. the photos show that crews found radioactivity in someone's living room. the navy and treasure island association insist the levels do not pose a concern. this comes after our report last year finding the navy found elevated levels. a meeting is scheduled tonight at 6:30 on treasure island for residents to ask questions. for the past week we've been asking the navy and tita for the locations of these additional sites. the navy said it will try to let us know by the end of the week. we will of course be following these developments on treasure isla
