our deputy political editor vicky young reports.all been told to stay at home, but dominic cummings didn't. he, in fact, travelled to his parents' home in durham. before setting off, he was seen rushing out of downing street after discovering his wife had covid. weeks later, in the rose garden at downing street, he was forced to explain. i was worried that if my wife and i were both seriously ill, possibly hospitalised, there was nobody in london that we could reasonably ask to look after our child and expose themselves to covid. but today he revealed another version of events. my wife called saying, "there's a gang of people outside saying they're going to break into the house and kill everybody inside." so it was actually repeated security threats which prompted the move to durham. but when the story erupted, mr cummings decided not to mention that. now, at this point i madejust a terrible, terrible, terrible mistake, which i'm extremely sorry about. so i ended up giving the whole rose garden thing where what i said was true, but

vicky said she was in sacramento taking care of her mother on the morning of the shooting. she had last spoken with him tuesday night. and the next morning when she didn't hear from him she got worried after hearing of the violence. the family raced to the agonizing wait that all of these families endured. around 6:00 that'vening, they received the news that they feared. >> just not knowing if he was safe or if he was dead was just the hardest, hardest wait you could ever possibly imagine. i feel for all the families along with me and their families. i just -- my heart goes out to all of them because we all went through it. >> vicky and lars were planning to retire and had plans to go to hawaii in just two weeks from now. his son remembers him as an incredibly skilled worker who gave incredible guidance in life. >> truly so heart-breaking. and the vta families also in mourning. employees still trying to adjust to life and work in the wake of this tragedy. nbc bay area scott budman is live at san jose with an effort to try to begin and deal with this healing process. scott?

. >> i'm vicki liviakis said i'm grant lotus. this is happening near south main street and castle hill road. >> here's a picture of the scene. you see all that smoke all the damage. fire officials say they are mopping up the fire right now. so they have made good progress getting a handle on this thing. fire officials add that everyone who lives at the facility. the senior facility has been accounted for and they're now being transported to a safe location. there were a few small fires at homes and apartments nearby due to wind blowing embers. however, all of those smaller fires have since been extinguished. you see another picture here from further away. again, that large plume of smoke that was seen throughout much of the east bay this fire starting this afternoon. some people even reported to kron 4 that they were hearing explosions in the area. unclear at this time. if those explosions were related to the fires. first responders are asking people to stay away from that area of south main street in castle hill road. >> as well
