siege after the two armies at vicksburg go into siege operations. and really nothing has happened. there's not movement of money armies. it's a slow slog, sort of world war one ish kind of battle. and on a riverboat apparently yes grant got pretty well drunk. other than that we don't have a lot of real strong evidence that this was the case grant his credit recognized he had a problem with drink and he took steps to try to mitigate it. one his chief of staff, who will eventually be a general in the war john rawlins, was his name. a friend of grant's back to to illinois and to all the demands of chief of staff. the commander in army, one of rawlins job was to monitor in the camps and around the vicksburg time. rawlins sent a letter saying that if there is another incident like this, he, rawlins will resign. and so grant understood, there was a seriousness to his drink. there's there's one intriguing letter he writes to his wife, which he says, thank mrs. so-and-so for sending the bottle of bourbon. he was specific. he bourbon. you'll be happy to know

and we just began transporting people to the hospitaljust on the north side of vicksburg, people withverything and assisted in the search and rescue effort because the nearest hospital was about 40 miles away from rolling fork. and we just had to get people to help down there, to that hospital. it was just utter devastation, definitely similar to what we saw in kentucky a couple of years ago, the december 10 and 11 outbreak where mayfield and other communities in kentucky sustained serious devastation. and i understand you helped get some people — two people — to hospital who had sustained quite serious injuries. how is that search and rescue operation going now? i can see it's quite light, bright, even sunny where you are now. so is the weather, has it calmed down? is it helping that? yeah. the weather is calm certainly now. today, it is a little bit windy. just a classic post—frontal environment. a lot of times after these supercells move through on the back side of the outbreaks, you have crystal—clear skies like this. it's very dry. sometimes, it's cold as well afterwards. so, def

the nearest one i believe was vicksburg. there could be something a little bit closer that i didn't know about. but i saw a very large response of ambulances and police officers coming out of the city of vicksburg, which is about 45 miles south of this town. um i ate it and, you know, kind of just keeping people try. i was able to get them to my car. get them out of the rain, as many as i could. i did not have to transport anybody because i was part of something over all hard at work trying to unburied that you know the uninterested we could find people trapped in their homes by honestly definitely have a whole lot of time. but there are other there were other goods merit in in the town, using their trucks and pieces of debris like wood to use as a back rest for people that had neck and back injuries, and they were being transported to nearby towns. i believe in vicksburg, i was actually behind one there was a gentleman holding one of the people in the back of the truck as they were. holy transporting them to fix book. i jus

with aaron riggs, b who's a professional storm chase that he's joining us from this vicksburg in mississippi . thank you so much. and for being with us, as you heard a correspondent, their unclear whether it was one tornado or several of them that cause the destruction, the widespread destruction that we've seen in mississippi. the national weather service has been talking about the possibility that the devastation was caused by what it says was a skipping tornado. what is that, and how different is it from a normal tornado and how dangerous is it? yeah, it's actually what that is is that the storm is what we call it cyclic super cells . so as one tornado was broken out. another one immediately touches down right after it. so the cyclic super cells can oftentimes we can think that it's only one single tornado tracking over a very long distance. but as the damage surveys are conducted, they can see those missing points between tornadoes and determine if it was one long tornado or multiple large tornadoes. produced by the same storm, which is equally as impressive with the parameter space that

we're joined on the line now by storm chaser erin rigby in vicksburg, mississippi, just south of rollingork. thanks for being here with us. i understand you arrived at the town literally, literally right after the tornado touched down. it must have been absolutely terrifying. tell me about what you saw. absolutely this tornado was one of those tornadoes that went 0 to 100. very very quickly. it started out just outside of town and probably about a mile southwest of the town before it was impacted as justice cylinder cone tornado, and it quickly grew with every lightning flash into a huge at least quarter mile wide wedge tornado and i actually didn't realize how close we were to the town and the path of the tornado was taking until it was too late when across the road in front of us. that's when i could see all the debris being lost it up into the air by all of the power flashes and the lightning. and i arrived on scene literally as the tornado had just exit town. and there was there was just a constant scream for help while it was pouring down the rain, thunder and lightning still around

joining me now from vicksburg, mississippi, is sherry mckinney. is the national spokesperson for the american red cross. appreciate you being with us at this difficult time. thank you for having us and in the wake of this deadly tornado talk to us about just how bad the situation is on the ground in that area and what help is needed right now. right earlier. today, i was in rolling fork, mississippi, which is the area where the tornado first touched down and you can literally see where you go from beautiful, lush trees. two sticks that just sticks straight up, and it looks like to fix all over the area and homes just obliterated in. there is nothing left to rolling fork. there is nothing um, homes will have to be completely rebuilt. we know that there are more than 2000 homes that are either majorly damaged or destroyed. um so our work is cut out for us from this point forward for recovery for all of these folks in mississippi. so what exactly is the american red cross doing on the ground there at this moment? right now. we have brought in about 2

so a lot of emergency services had to come from vicksburg about 45 miles away. so now it's getting a lot more organized. and they you know things are looking up here for the time being. and you've chased some storms in the past. how does this compare with what you've seen in the past? and based on the accounts you've heard from other people? what was it like being in the middle of this as it was going on? this was definitely one of the fastest developing tornadoes that i had ever documented. i've seen tornadoes to this caliber before, but they had usually are being the ongoing and on the ground for so long. this started out when we saw the initial touchdown as a small cylinder cone tornado, and within five minutes it had grown until at least a quarter mile wide wedge , very violent tornado as it unfortunately entered the town, and this was by far the most raw search and rescue that i have ever been a part of, you know a lot of times. it's a you know, a couple of quick checks here and there. hey, are you okay? yeah. okay onto the next house. this one. this was th

i get t two text messages back o back for my sister and my daughter in vicksburg and they both said itrunning towards the back of the building saying that my mother is on the phone and she said there's a tornado down and at that point, most of us were towards the back of the building. and the lights flickered. and i just hollered cooler and my husband opened the cooler door and started shoving us in so just a minute. about a minute. >> robin: , is it true that right before you closed the cooler door, when you look out, he was able to already see that the roof was off of the restaurant, that he could see the sky? >> yes. when he got us all in and he got in, he lost control of the door. the wind hooked the door and somehow he was able to get the door back. and just before it shook, he looked up and he said, i see the sky. and so that let us know that this was way worse than anything we could have imagined. and the roof was gone. >> robin: oh, barbara, i know that you were one of those that was inside the cooler at the time. just give us a sense of what it was like inside as we know what
