vicky nguyen has more on the lawsuit and one victim's advice. >> i'm ronnie deutch, whether it's $1 or $1,000. >> reporter: the tax lady's ads caught the eye of jennifer giranamo. she said three years of bad accounting left her $30,000 in tax debt. >> the irs is calling and mailing me letter after letter. and they were going to attack my bank accounts, my property, anything they could. they could even go after my clients for money. >> reporter: so she called ronny deutsche. >> they told me that they could get penalties and interest taken off, that they could lessen my tax bill and get me into an agreement i could afford. what the reality of it was was that they didn't help me. that my case sat there for months and months. >> reporter: jennifer says she paid about $2,000 for services that amounted to nothing. turns out she's far from alone. we found dozens of similar complaints online at rip-off report and complaints board with some people reporting they had lost up to $5,000 through deutsche's services. >> ronnie and her tax attorneys have been fighting the irs. >> reporter: now attorn

nbc bay area's vicky nguyen looks at the gang suspect's ties. we begin at highland hospital where the officer is in critical condition. george, any new updates? >> reporter: he lost a significant amount of blood when he was shot. a doctor here describes the situation as you heard, touch and go. the officer is in critical but stable condition. all this as the search is on for this gunman who took off in a stolen mazda. >> reporter: police markers pinpoint where the shootout happened. oakland police say the man shot at two fremont police officers. the bullets hit one of the officers in the leg and pelvis. it's unclear if the suspect was hit by any gunfire. investigators tell us he then ran into the parking lot of this corner market where he first tried to steal an acura by shooting a driver's side window, then ended up carjacking the driver of this mazda. police released this still photo. one neighbor saw and heard everything. we've disguised her voice and are not showing her face to protect her. >> we heard a shooting. and we heard a broken windo

our vicky nguyen joins us live with more. vicky. >> lisa, it is the first time we're seeing personal family photos of mehserle and the first time his father has spoken about his son. he told us with a quiet resolve he believes his son was wrongly convicted. he says he thought they were going to bring him home, and now they're doing everything they can to convince the judge to free their son. >> thanks for coming out. >> reporter: todd mehserle hugged supporters. he stood outside san jose city hall holding signs to show they haven't forgotten the former b.a.r.t. officer. >> there's a lot of people that know my son and they know exactly who he is as a person, as a human being and the facts speak for themselves. that's why we say he's wrongly convicted. >> reporter: mehserle's family launched this website just a couple days ago, asking for donations and letters of support. they've also posted personal photos of him as a young basketball player, a family man and a graduate of the police academy. >> always tried to be a law-abidin

our vicky nguyen spoke to them. what an emotional and what a significant moment for them. >> and very nice of them to share with us in their home, pat and jim dewitt say their son looked energetic and upbeat. maybe a little on the thin side. but they say hearing him speak tonight reassured them their son is coming home, proud of the mission he accomplished. between juggling phone calls -- >> hey, mom. >> yes, i know. >> reporter: the dewitts watched their son on "nbc nightly news," joining him half a world away in a moment of history. a war that lit up tvs seven years ago in a live broadcast from dewitt's convoy. >> yes, we were the last combat unit in iraq. we were the ones that finished that combat mission, and we did it -- we did a really good job. >> this is the most of what he thinks of everything. >> reporter: he answered the call of duty. >> he at 16 on september 11th said, i'm going to have to go. you know, and he did. when various family members would say, why can't you talk him out of it, why should i? you

our vicky nguyen is live in downtown san jose with details of that plan and why the next 24 hours are critical. vicky. >> reporter: well, lisa, the city of san jose is set to vote tomorrow to approve a plan that would free up funds for 99 first-time homebuyers here in san jose. the buyers would be buying in designated building like the 88 here, high-density buildings. the idea, the more people who own homes, the more money they spend. more businesses, more jobs and a bigger tax break that would increase city services for everyone. >> this is still one of the most expensive housing markets in the country. they could get up to 20% of the sales price from the state. >> reporter: you heard correctly. first-time homebuyers can get a loan for up to 20% of the price of their home. and they won't to have pay it back for 30 years. and even then they'll only be charged 3% interest. homes at the 88 and the works are part of the first phase. once the state budget is approved, 360 and two others are next. >> people will stay here. people won't have to move out of town just because they can't affor
