. >> a senior investigative reporter vicky nguyen learned thousands of drivers are being fined for something they didn't do. >> reporter: good morning. our investigation began with a tip from a father and son who both received tickets for using the fast track express lanes in the east bay, both had her tickets overturned because they weren't at fault. and there was photo evidence. in one case the cameras read the license plate incorrectly, in the other the car was next to the express lane not in it. while we learned they are far from alone. since january of 2017 the agency in charge of sending out express lane violations has sent out more than 58,000 bills that were wrong. that adds up to $1.4 million in fines that were later dismissed. a spokesman for the bay area toll authority says the technology is getting better, which should cut down on the error, but you should check your fast track statement to make sure you are not being charged for using the express lanes when you are not and if you are billed by mistake file an appeal. to find out by fast track lanes have the highest rate of fault
