victoria murphy, the royal reporter, just outside the lindo wing right now. victoria, it is a girl.sn't this what the british and royal watchers everywhere were hoping for? >> reporter: good morning, it's a girl, how exciting. very quickly, kate was admitted at 6:00 a.m. the baby was born at just half past 8:00 this morning. yes, it is what the british public were hoping for. we were looking forward to a little girl. we have a prince, now we have a princess. now we can all start talking about what he's wearing. >> of course. george always looks adorable but can you give us a sense of how the traditions might be different this time around since it is a girl? >> reporter: i think what's interesting here is that even though this baby is a girl, actually there will be nothing different if she had been a boy and that's very important. the succession was changed so that if kate and william go on to have another baby boy, he will not leapfrog his older sister in the line of succession. she is fourth in line to the throne and she is going to remain fourth in line to the throne regardless of

. >> victoria murphy thank you for joining us from london this morning. dan? >>> from the hospital we go over to buckingham palace where the crowds are starting to gather for another royal tradition, a key element of the postpartum pageantry and our royal contributor is there. tell us what's going to happen next or the sequence of events here. >> reporter: as you say, royal tradition. we've got i'm told about 25 to 30 minutes before they will unveil an easel outside buckingham palace to announce the royal birth officially and we're hoping we might find out what this princess is called. >> it is tradition for the name to be announced at this moment? >> reporter: tradition, yes. it doesn't mean that they definitely will stick to that rule but there's certainly a lot of excitement here at buckingham palace. it coincided with the daily changing of the guard. earlier the guardsmen were playing congratulations to the delight of all the tourists and the well wishers that have gathered here. >> duncan thank you so much. we appreciate you joining us from buckingham pal

joining us now with more abc news royal contributor victoria murphy is in london looking great and ourot of people are commenting about the fact that kate leaving so soon. >> yeah. >> ten hours or so but that's not highly unusual there in the uk. >> in the uk correct, it's a lot more common than it is here. let's look at the numbers. there was one study dong of 11,000 women. they found that 42% actually left the hospital within a day of giving birth. so in the uk it's not as unusual. here it's pretty much a land speed record. >> what is it here? >> you know most women tay in the hospital two nights because that's what most insurance plans cover and they want every minute of that time. they need the rest especially if they have babies or children at home and let's face it. not everyone has a full staff to help her when they get home so for moms that don't they need that time the support the nurses can give the baby and most women go home in 48 hours. >> i don't want to speak too much for ali. hamper our second baby than elliott, our first. is that common. >> every pregnancy, every labor
