when we come back, we go to vienna austria on the nuclear negotiations with iran. us. ♪ [music break] amy: this is democracy now!, democracynow.org, the war and peace report. i'm amy goodman. we turn now to what could be the final step in a historic deal between iran and six world powers that would limit tehran's nuclear ability for more than a decade in exchange for sanctions relief. negotiations over iran's nuclear program entered their 17th and possibly last day in vienna today, as interim agreement is set to expire at 6:00 p.m. et tonight. secretary of state john kerry told reporters he is confident a deal is within reach, but negotiators in vienna are still smoothing over key details including what limits to set on iran's nuclear research, the pace of sanctions relief, and whether to lift a united nations arms embargo on iran. if a deal is brokered, congress will have 60 days to review it keeping u.s. sanctions in place in the meantime. an extra 22 days are set aside for voting, a possible presidential veto, and then another vote to see if opponents can muster

right now let's get to that breaking news in vienna austria.t official that nuclear talks with iran are being extended through monday now. nbc's chief foreign affairs correspondent andrea mitchell joins me by phone from vienna. andrea we just spoke 30 or 45 minutes ago. what happened? >> reporter: they clearly are not getting together in reaching an agreement. there was an interim agreement that was going to expire on friday night, the agreement that capped iran's nuclear activity and temporarily gave them some sanction relief. it's been in place since december of a year ago, so at this point the only option was to extend it. the question was how long they would extend it 24 48 hours. the fact they're extending it until monday is not very promising because it means things don't get done until the very last minute and it means they can go right through sunday night until monday and monday night vienna time if they want to. this keeps everything in place. iran can't say it's going to break out. the u.s. can't say it's going to stop the sanction r

it comes on the 17th straight day of negotiations in vienna austria, and with the latest extension of the temporary deal with iran set to expire tonight. nbc's chiefal ali ruzi joins me from austria. what are you hearing about this final draft agreement? what might it look like? >> reporter: i think that's where they seem to be having some problems because that is very important, because once they draw up that agreement, once everything is put on paper and they sign it as a legally binding document regardless of what happens in congress or what hard liners want to cover the deal here the negotiations are being defined by that document so they want to be very careful what goes down in that. one of the issues is eyeif iran's activities will be taken out of that. another sticky point in that draft agreement will be u.n. sanctions ballistic missile program and a wider arms embargo. iran wants that lifted they say it has nothing to do with the nuclear program, but the west feels that may fuel the conflict a little further in the region and they're reluctant to take that out. we heard they
