under way for a missing malaysian airline plane which is reported to have crashed into the sea off vietnam. the aircraft lost radio contact some two hours after taking off. >> relatives have been waiting at beijing airport where it was due to land. it was carrying 232 passengers and 12 crew. the boeing left kuala lumpur at 12.41am. it was expected to arrive in beijing at around 6:30am, around 9.5 hours ago. the vietnamese state media report that the plane could have gone down near the south china sea, near vietnam's sworn coast. the acting transport minister gave this update. >> we have been working closely with our neighbours, especially with china, vietnam, philippines and indonesia, where we have requested assistance. first on information or whereabouts the plane may be, and secondly there is a need for search and rescue which we cannot - i've been told that cooperation from the military side is very forthcoming. we are doing everything we can to ensure that every possible angle in this situation is addressed. the second point i wanted to raise is to avoid speculation. there's two issue

the plane has crashed off the coast of the vietnam. let's go to rob mcbride at the airport in beijing. what can you tell us right now? >> it is a very agonising weight for relatives, friends of passengers aboard the aircraft, waiting for confirmation that the aircraft has, indeed, crashed in the sea. what we are hearing from malaysian airline officials in beijing, and from malaysia itself is that they cannot confirm there has been a crash. they have heard the same reports that we have, quoted on reuters newsagency. that a senior vietnamese naval official said there has been a crash. the agency is trying to get this corroborated. this has been reported. they are trying to get a corroboration. until they do get that confirmation, it is very difficult for the airline to confirm that. their official position is that this airline is officially missing. it's been some 12 hours since the last contact with the aircraft, a good six or seven hours since passengers should have been arriving in the hall at beijing international airport. relatives

they report the plane crashed off the south of vietnam.alaysia's transport minister says there's no evidence of wreckage. tom costello is following the developments for us since the story broke. tom, with a welcome. let's talk about this plane, it's a huge plane, the boeing 777 but it has a good safety track record, doesn't it? >> a very good record. the pilot is experienced with 18,000 flying hours. the 777 is a workhorse for long haul flights. this plane is a 200 series. it's an earlier model, but the plane is only 11 1/2 years old. they have a rolls-royce engine. left kuala lumpur at 12:30 a.m. the red eye into beijing. air traffic controllers lost contact in or near vietnamese air space supposed to arrive at 6:30 a.m. and it never did. the plane is presumed to have crashed into the ocean. this would be only the second crash involving the 777. last july, an asiana flight crashed. they believe pilot error was to blame on that crash. this was early similar to the air france crash in 2009 killing all 228 people on board. investigators beli

there's not a single special operations unit that still use k-9s from the end of vietnam until post 911. with fewer exceptions, military police and k-9 handlers augment different units for certain capacities, there was no self-sufficient entities in terms of k-9 programs. k-9 programs are no different from a police unit, military branch and it is not a light switch type of application, you can't turn it off and 20 years later get the k-9s back on, flip the light switch on and there's a cohesive unit that works the same before you turned on. no different from a special operations unit but you can't disband special operations after a military conflict is over and ten years later something happens and let's just get the guys back going to. it doesn't work that way. after 9/11 it became very apparent with all the work we were doing in afghanistan and iraq, military working dogs were something that were of enormous value. at first they started using military police dogs with their handlers and trying to incorporate them in that capacity but they were limited in terms of the ability of the do

i believe we can continue the great society while we fight in vietnam. military chiefs were asking for more money. yet president johnson rejected a tax increase. we asked his economic adviser, james duesenberry, why. we had, after all, just gone through a big program of tax reduction, so that turning around did not appeal to him. but i think a more significant matter was that it brought the issue of the vietnam war into a very sharp political focus. william mcchesney martin, then chairman of the federal reserve, had very good contacts with the pentagon and with the defense producers. and through the federal reserve system, those directors and branches all around the country, the information was pouring in, showing that the economy was heating up. to martin, inflation was more than a distant threat. it was a present reality. the federal reserve board decided to fight it. in december 1965, they raised the discount rate. johnson hit the ceiling. he announced publicly he would call bill martin, the chairman of the federal reserve, down to the ranch for a ton

we've been watching president obama awarding 24 medals to world war ii veterans, korea, and vietnam. we're going to have a profile of one of those individuals, one of the three living recipients at the ceremony today later in the show. let us turn now to the world lead. it is now 12 days since malaysia airlines flights 370 vanished with 239 people on board. while we're all waiting for that a-ha moment, malaysian authorities say they have found nothing yet to indicate that this was a premeditated act. they even took a flight simulator from the captain's house. so far no e-mails to indicate that this was a planned event. investigators reviewed conversations with the cockpit and no data there. someone likely reprogrammed the plane's cockpit computer to veer off course. how do investigators know that? "the new york times" reports that flight 370 reported the change through the aircraft communications addressing and reporting system, which you probably know now as acars. let's bring in our aviation correspondent rene marsh. what are you hearing? >> well, jake, there is so much confusion o

a malaysia airlines boeing 777-200 is missing over vietnam. kron four's mike pelton is in the newsroom with the latests. mike? >> marty, this plane-- carrying 239 people, was headed from kuala lumpur to beijing. it took off around 12-30 this morning. it then lost contact around 2-40 local time with air traffic control. search and rescue crews from several countries are searching to locate the plane. >> here is a map of where the plane reportedly crashed. vietnamese reports say signals have been detected about 140 miles southwest of vietnam's southernmost coastal province of ca mau. a vietnam official has since denied this report. a crash scene has still not been identified. the plane was expected to land in beijing at 6:30 this morning. china's state run news agency reported the plane was lost in airspace controll by vietnam, and never made any contact with chinese air traffic control. >> we are looking at all possibilities. it is too early to make their remarks. >> i just like to say that our thoughts and prayers are with the aggrieved famili
