i wrote the book mainly because coming home from vietnam and meeting other vietnam vets, basically the conversations evolved around combat and what not, which is natural for a war. but since i did not experiencing that, i wanted people to know what it was like just for a regular guy to be in a hostile environment, fear for his life and put up with the daily atrocities of a government that wouldn't give you ammo to defend yourself. that when they finally did give it to you when you went on guard duty, you were not allowed to lock and load a round which means you pull the trigger, nothing happens. and if you did see something, you couldn't just shoot at it. you had to first getter mission. and -- get permission. and it's just a heck of a way, you know, to run an army. before vietnam i was at fort sill, oklahoma. i became a battery clerk, company clerk if it were the infantry. then after about 13 months, got a phone call with the next levy for vietnam, and the last name they read off was papp, john d.. and that was me. and as much as i didn't want to go, i obviously ended up in vietnam. p
