cbs' omar villafranca reports tonight from the scene of the ia massacre. >> reporter: this is the man police say shot and killed a nine-year-old boy and three adults in a shooting rampage just five miles from disneyland. >> we have shots fired. >> reporter: detectives say 44- year-old aminadab gaxiola gonzalez started shooting, targeting people he knew, trying to slow down first responders from saving victims he chained targeting people he knew, trying to slow down fir the gates to the business with bicycle locks. business w police rushed to the scene, breaking through the locks. >> in the meantime, horrific rampage was going on in offices, and people were dying or were being shot. >> reporter: inside, two women and a man, all dead. outside, the nine-year-old boy who was killed found in the arms of a woman believed to be his mother. >> it is believed that there was one of the women victims who was one of the women victims embracing that child, apparently after he was shot. >> reporter: tonight, that woman also shot in critical condition, as is gaxiola gonzalez. police say they arrived

norah. >> o'donnell: all right, omar villafranca, thank you. and we should note that just a few miles away in minneapolis, more dramatic testimony today as a key defense witness insisted that derek chauvin was not to blame for george floyd's death. instead, the expert raised a number of other possibilities, including carbon monoxide poisoning. cbs' jamie yuccas was inside the courtroom. >> reporter: maryland's former chief medical examiner dr. david fowler backed the defense's argument that george floyd's death was not a homicide. >> all of his injuries were in areas where the knee was not. >> reporter: fowler said floyd's heart suddenly stopped, due to hypertension and heart disease. he also testified that many factors contributed to floyd's death, including drugs. and fowler pushed this theory: >> there is exposure to a vehicle exhaust, so potentially carbon monoxide poisoning. >> reporter: the prosecution swung back. >> do you agree with me that there was no finding of carbon monoxide poisoning per the autopsy review? >> i do. autopsy >> rep

norah. >> o'donnell: omar villafranca, thank you. tonight a shocking number from the crisis at the southern border. cbs news has learned 150,000 migrants were likely apprehended in march, that is 50% more than in february. among those allowed to stay, hundreds that have been dumped in a small desert down in arizona hours from the nearest shelter. cbs' lilia luciano follows their journey. >> reporter: in the tiny town of ajo in the middle of the arizona desert, border patrol comes by every day and drops off dozens of asylum seekers after they have been processed. they're left to find their way. >> this isn't a local decision. >> reporter: aaron cooper says the town doesn't have the resources needed so the county has to drive asylum seekers two and a half hours to the nearest shelter in tucson. >> so when we went from one drop a day to two drops a day, we had volunteer burnout and it turned from i'm willing to pitch in for a few hours to this is a full- time job. >> reporter: the volunteers also give them food and a covid test. in the

cbs' omar villafranca is leading us off in brooklyn center outside of minneapolis. good evening, omar. >> reporter: a big crowd of protestors are blocking the street in front of the brooklyn center police department. officers in full riot gear standing behind barricades they have support getting ready for another long night. this police body cam shows footage shows the final moments of 20-year-old daunte wright's life. officers attempted to handcuff wright when he struggles to get back in hihis car. another officer comes to help. but it was a gun not a taser that she fired. >> taser taser taser! oh, ( bleep )! i just shot him! yes! >> reporter: wright managed to speed off, traveling a few blocks before crashing into another car. authorities tried to revive him but he died at the scene. police chief tim gannon described the shooting as an accidental discharge. >> it is my belief that the officer had the intention to deploy their taser but instead shot mr. wright with a single bullet. >> reporter: the officer described as very senior has been placed on administrative
