this was the scene on the 100 block of vincent street in pittsburg last night. has mac trucks, police, and pacific gas & electric trying to sort out what happened inside his home. officers who got no answer at the door peeked into a back window and saw someone in distress, and then forced their way in. >> clearly they were altered. >> reporter: there was a grown man and three children aged 6 to 16 all inside, suffering the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning. after clearing the house, officers began questioning neighbors, who said they had not seen the family outside in over a week. according to spokesperson steve hill, that is not surprising. >> oftentimes these events are not short-term ones. they don't come on instantly , and second, it unfortunately kill people. they tend to go on for days. >> reporter: this incident is an unfortunate reminder that before cold snap's, it's important to have heating units checked to make sure they are working well, because the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning can be hard to distinguish early on from seasonal ailments. >
