virgin islands. we appreciate the update. >>> and joining us is the director of the national hurricane center ken graham. thanks for joining us. first of all, what's the impact that dorian is having on communities in the caribbean that are clearly still struggling to recover from hurricane maria? >> i will tell you, wolf, they're getting all sorts of rainfall. they're getting the wind. and that's always a dangerous combination. right here, satellite and radar, looking right next to each other here. you can see the eye moving north of the islands but we have to remember, that some of these bands can linger on a little bit later. even if this eye moves northward, look at the rain bands coming out of. there you can still get some rainfall overnight and dangerous situation for the island, and we have to keep an eye on it throughout the entire night. >> after passing through the caribbean, hurricane dorian is expected to strengthen, correct me if i'm wrong, as it approaches the united states mainland. how

she is on st thomas in the us virgin islands and works for the virgin islands olympic committee.ryone there was they were told it was going to be a tropical storm and not a hurricane, so residents prepare differently. well, you tie down different things, you put different things on your windows. i think a lot more people would have covered their windows, my mother would have been one of those people. a lot of people took their boats out of the water this morning. the 5:00am update is when we found out we were on hurricane watch. i know you have been through a number of hurricanes — how bad is this? not bad at all, compared to those. with those we had no power for days and days, and for hurricane marilyn, a year. we have some down power lines, so no electricity to parts of the island now, i know stjohn just got power back earlier this evening. we expect our power to be on by tomorrow, and there are some trees down, a bit of flooding, but comparatively nothing compared to category 5s and 3s hurricanes that you just mentioned. we have seen some of the images you sent us on our scree

virgin islands. the u.s. virgin islands are seeing the worst of this. we're showing the videos you've taken. describe what you've been seeing and hearing. >> basically, the storm has pretty much moved to the north of us at this point and it has calmed quite a bit. the early part was probably the worst part and did it hit more of the western part and the southern part of st. thomas. overall, it was nothing compared to what we experienced about two years ago. >> you can see in the videos, we had a drought for a while. a lot of the mud is washing off. i think we were pretty well prepared for it. overall, we're going to recover from this pretty quickly. >> what about the damage that you're seeing to homes and to infrastructure, for example? >> reporter: well, mostly there's some down power lines, a few downed telephone lines. overall, the level of damage that you're seeing, at least central on the island, is not as bad as it might be on the western end. a little more remote. it would be a little more difficult to get to. there are a lot of trees in the road

virgin islands. so glad to have you, captain. dorian barrelled right into the u.s. virgin islands. what are you hearing about the conditions there? >> yeah, thanks for having me on. the -- fortunate i think comparatively for the most recently we compare ourselves to irma and maria. certainly were spared a blow from that. but our preparations for -- with -- for the storm didn't really change. we were still ready to take the impact on and we're set to go tomorrow to try to re-open the ports and waterways over there. >> you're in san juan now, correct? >> yes, sir. >> what are you seeing? >> we were fortunately spared, as you saw the track of the storm, it really minimal impacts here in the san juan metro area. certainly impacts to the east of puerto rico over into st. thomas, st. john and st. croix as well. >> how did the u.s. coast guard go about preparing for dorian? >> so, here in san juan we have seven fast response cutters and another coastal patrol boat. we sent them down ahead of time to curacoa to stage up, to respond back to dorian in puerto rico and the virgin islands. in a

virgin islands were hit hard. the center of the storm not making landfall in puerto rico as you get in closer here. the hurricane winds extend outward only 15 miles. they didn't even come close. in fact the hurricane winds are really on the northern and eastern flank. the tropical storm force winds extend outward 80 miles. that would have covered part of puerto rico, a good part. but the winds were off to the east. they missed out on that. you can see where the heavier rain is. the strongest gust in san juan was 34 miles an hour. that's a typical wednesday thunderstorm. they really missed out. great news there. excellent news that's what we want to see. but now going forward what will happen with the steering current? to find the steering current going forward we need to find out where they will be in the next couple days. as we watch the computer models hinting maybe free peter and the bahamas. the european model wants to take it across west palm. cross the florida peninsulaen a maybe regenerate and get stronger

virgin islands was spared the brunt of the storm. you can see some of the images. the virgin islands did get strong winds and rain, but as far as we can so far no overwhelming damage like hurricanes maria and irma. meteorologist chad myers has been going over the data in the weather center. this thing is getting stronger and headed right at florida. >> 5:00 a.m. now brings 125 mile-per-hour storm along the florida coast. there are still a couple of models that will turn it farther to the north up toward jacksonville and farther north than that, but the major number of models we believe bringing it right north of miami, south of the space coast as 125 mile or more hurricane. so that's category 3 only five miles from a category 4 storm. those are the updates from really the overnight hours. nothing has truly been updated, i think, since then. hurricane hunter in it. it's an 85 mile-per-hour storm moving away from san juan. we're going to lose radar presentation quite quickly, because the only radar out there is from puerto rico and it's getting so far away, you canno

virgin islands.orecasters predict dorian will welcome a major storm possibly, category 3 hurricane by sunday over the bahamas, it heads toward the u.s. mainland. paolo talk to me about the rain. >> so we had that first outer band a little while ago, it came with some of the wind, the rain, that enis the people off the beach, now that that's past. folks will come back out for a little while here in san juan, here's what officials are doing this very second. they had previously deployed resources to the southern edge of the island. this morning they woke up to the forecast showing a different path. at this moment, they're scrambling resources to the northeastern part of the island, and also the southeastern places as well. officials are concerned about the rain. that is it expected later tonight. it's very clear that this by no means will be maria when it comes to the wind, when it comes to the rain, the concern is that parts of san juan could see up to 4 inches, the more mountainous regions up to 10.

anywhere kind of toward the british virgin islands, that's where the center of this storm is. you can see that on the radar, this last image, exactly right there you go, the center of it cutting across the islands. it's going to continue to pull off toward the north. this is the general pattern that happens in the summer. bermuda high, it kind of stays there, storms off to the east. that high pressure where is it located means the storm will move in one direction or another. that's kind of what we're watching here after we're talking about the storm impacting puerto rico. the official track of this continues to pull toward the north/northwest and then looks at this point like we're going to see some impacts across the eastern seaboard maybe even into the gulf. we have two main computer models. one of them pulls it across florida out into the gulf and then turns it towards the north. that will give us a second hit of the storm sometime middle part of next week. another one of our most reliable models curves it up along the coast. bottom line here, unfortunately, anywhere from fl

at least it was a good thing for the virgin islands. it moved pretty quickly even though it did batter the virgin islands earlier today. so looking on radar we see the swirl right there, we see the eye closing in right now but we see the heavy rain around it. right now over the open waters of the atlantic. what that means is it's continuing to pick up that warm fuel from the waters and it's going to continue to increase the strength of this as it moves to the north and also to the west. so as we track dorian we are looking at a category 1 storm. it's north of puerto rico right now. it's going to move off to the north and also the west over the next several days. so by friday at 8:00 a category 2 storm, 105-mile-per-hour winds. look where it is. it's making no interaction. that tends to break up a storm it's right over the open waters of the atlantic. it's going to continue to pick up fuel. by friday into saturday that's when we anticipate it to be a category 3 storm. now, as we go throughout time here in the bahamas, in the northwestern
