let's try back with karen gray houston in burke, virginia now. >> reporter: the polls close here in virginia in a few minutes. at 7:00, and we should be starting to get an indication, not too long after that, about whether this is going to be a red or a blue state. president obama seems to have a slightem in the more recent polls taken over mitt romney. as you know, the only poll that really counts is the one that is going on right now. now, the lines have been long here. voting heavy at the lake braddock secondary school in burke all day long and this houses two precincts. the lake braddock precinct, a larger one and the heaviest voting and the signal hill precinct. we are told by officials that, and i have some numbers here 4600 voters voted and that is out of 7,850 registered voters, which makes it about a 70% turnout, which is awfully heavy and there are about 1,000 absentee ballots that they have to count. now, the voters we spoke to seem to favor president obama and gave us reasons that they think he is more concerned about women, than he is more concerned about the middle school. some

of virginia. as we go to the presidential election, joining us inside the courthouse to discuss the commonwealth of virginia is role in the election, barbara comstock, whose district includes walden, a county. joining her is the chairman of the virginia democratic party. if we could start with you, ye is clouded such a swing county? >> it is an area that has a lot of commuters, professionals, and a lot of people this year who are very concerned with the increase taxes that we would see, do you reversed. as well as the deep defense cuts, which is something that would really impact the area dramatically. george mason and stephen fuller, one of the preeminent economists in our area said the defense cuts could cause a recession in virginia and almost double the unemployment numbers. bridget has been several -- rigid has been scary -- very successful in having a low unemployment rate. jobs is the number one priority. that is why we are very courageous that the numbers of supporters in for mitt romney t

virginia is one of the key states. 13 electoral votes in virginia. the northern part of the state is right outside of washington d.c. talking about fairfax county, a lot of government workers that live in this area, a lot of younger affluent more demo graphically part of the state. virginia beach and norfolk, the largest navy base, a lot of mill. a lot of african-americans that live in this part. richmond has a large african- american population and in the western part of the state, out here in the appalachian mountains, a lot more rural and a lot of white conservative part, bible part of virginia. that's the dynamic voters. last time president obama won virginia, the first time a democrat has captured virginia since 1954. beat john mccain. he is hoping for a repeat performance. 64% white and 19 percent african-american in virginia. and a fairly significant hispanic population. in virginia the unemployment rate is 5.9%. a lot of government workers and one of the thing that mitt romney is talking about is reducing the size of government. that could pu

virginia. >> virginia senate is one of the most fascinating races. it's been a toss-up from the very beginning. it's one of the seats that needd congress or senator jim web's retiring. two former governors, tim kaine, ggeorge allen both running. this has been very much a national race with national money flowing to the race. 51.5 million spent from outside group. $30 million from the candidates alean. tim kaine was obama's democratic national committee chair. george allen is the former senator from this seat this has been a fascinating dynamic as both parties try to tie their fate to the top of the ticket. we got a few early exit polls looking at virginia that suggest that the president is performing fairly well with women right now. 52%. this is one of the early waves of these exit polls we've been talking about, but it suggests that that could help him in virginia but romney is winning with independent voters in virginia. that's going to be a real key what we're looking at all night long. >>

it says tim kaine for virginia. kaine is attributing his success to this sort of grass roots support, grass roots enthusiasm. despite millions of dollars spent on this campaign by outside groups trying to influence the outcome from negative ads, in the end, kaine defeated george allen. kaine gave his acceptance speech before a crowd of supporters in richmond last night. he thanked them for all of their hard work in this very long campaign. george allen in his concession speech struck a similar tone. he also thanked his supporters. both men are saying that lots of work still needs to be done now that the election is over. >> now is the hard work. it's time for all of us in the commonwealth to come together and find solutions to our nation's common problems. and i'm optimistic that we can because that's the virginia way. >> we need to continue to keep putting our beliefs into action, and my hope is that each and every one of you all will keep fighting, keep working, keep the faith, and always, most importantly, always
