in virginia at that time, you had a very tenuous patriot hold on the southeastern part of virginia? >> what you mean? >> the independence-minded faction, the people who would have been the supporters of washington and jefferson. they were able to raise militia companies on the british side. but this was only very briefly. october-november 1775. that is when dunmore's star was highest. after they abandoned know for, -- noroflk more or less around new year's day 1776. >> what did you think of king george iii? >> he was not as bad as people made out. in other words, he was not an ogre. he was a man who had big ambitions to restore the importance of the crown and he did not really succeed. he regarded the american revolution in the same way that a lot of politicians in washington regarded vietnam. he felt that if he could not hold america, the dominoes will fall in the rest of the british empire. he was a bad decision maker for the british government in the early years. to blame it all on him would be a mistake. >> what is your take on the 16 points that were made by thomas jefferson in

thank you to the west virginia state society for hosting this event. thank you to ira for the great title. i've been playing around with my book for a few decades. he was the senate minority leader at the time. ira started in 2008, but he came up with the perfect title. appreciate it. i came to work and frankly, i do not know what to expect. i'm from west virginia. as an undergraduate, i was heavily involved in anti-war. i was engaged in some protests and a demonstration for the vietnam war. i started to work for byrd and had no idea how he would respond with. i was one of those liberal protesters he he is always denouncing. one time he called the protests a "human circus." i was working for him. there was a story of how a west virginia and and my boss were standing up for the crew. i know there are efforts today to portray reagan. had it not been for byrd, the whole thing would have been a disastrous administration. at any rate, byrd was nothing like i had read about. i learned there is so much misinformation about him. i also learned that he is the m

the gentleman from virginia is recognized. mr. scott: i rise -- i yield myself such time as i may consume. the speaker pro tempore: the gentleman is recognized. mr. smith: i rise -- mr. scott: i rise in support of h.r. 662, because it improves the america invents act. earlier this year, the house passed h.r. 6621 in a vote of 3088-89. the senate passed the legislation with an amendment by unanimous concept. now that the america invents act is law, our focus should be on how it can be improoveed. this is why i support h.r. 6621 because it accomplishes that very goal in several respects. to begin with h.r. 66 1 clarifies and improves provisions to help implement the america invents act, it clarifies provisions dealing with patent term adjustments, derivation proceedings and terms of the patent public advisory committee. the senate amendment to this bill makes one change to the house-passed bill by removing the provision requiring the patent office to prepare a report on patent applications pending before the office for over 18 years

university of virginia will be offering five of those last month. last i checked we had 127,000 people registered for them. and most of those people are outside of the united states. on the other hand other people who won't be getting a transcript and won't be getting credit, they will be exposed to the knowledge. one of the reasons we're interested in this is because our faculty want to learn to teach in this way and we believe students learn differently in this way. from that perspective it doesn't really matter so much whether the student is inside of the out or outside of the united states. we're interested in what the educational interactions are. but you make the interesting point that we give away the information. i think that, that is true and i think it will offer a lot of people the opportunity to learn, i could do college level work and this is really interesting, more interesting then i thought. i hope one outcome will be that people who might not have thought of college education will think about seeking one. i can tell from you my pers

it happened in a cul-de-sac not far from where we are standing in woodbridge, virginia. this is what happened. earlier police say a teen was inside the home. there was a knock, and when the teen opened the door, a man claimed to work for a cable company. he asked for a person and then the teen said that this person does not live here. so he leaves, but then he returns, this time he threatens the teen, forces himself inside the home. then forces the teen inside a bedroom and sexually assaults her. the teen, according to police, screamed and kicked at the man who then fled. now, we spoke to the sister earlier this evening, and she says that she just wants justice to be served. we believe we have some sound ready for you to talk about how this teen is doing tonight, how the family is coming together. the neighborhood is alerted. that there are prayers going on for this family. we want to first show you, if we have it, a picture of the suspect. it's a pretty good sketch released by police in prince william county. this is a black man wearing a beanie in his 20's. he is of me
