virginia has excellent universities. are there ways to engage those universities more in this effort? gov. mcauliffe: great question. we have. university of virginia is our key strategic learner. they are a part of the children's cabinet. the children's cabinet -- i actually asked my lieutenant governor who is a pediatric doctor -- university presidents are all part of that children's cabinet that we have. all of our pre-k, all of our education, i make sure we have community leaders, education leaders, but uva provides of a lot of the research data that i provided here today. you are right. we have great higher ed institutions. they want to be involved. we can do a better job when i talk about -- the key elements teachers are pre-k we could do a better job getting those institutions to train the teachers and get a pipeline of teachers as they are graduating. i will beginning several commencement addresses this year. one of my things will be, i need you, now that you have an education, i need your help now to plant the se

they truly were one of virginia's finest families. and and not far from stratford hall, a short drive away westmoreland county you we will find were george washington was born. by the time robert ely was born in 1807 george washington was long dead. but but the lee and washington names had already been fused together command that was because of robert e lee's father a man named henry white horse harry lee. white horse harry lee was one of george washington's most trusted count -- cavalry commanders. that is how he earned that nickname. but what makes the most famous is what he did after the war. he wrote a eulogy for result commander. he is the one who wrote 1st in war, 1st in peace, and 1st in the hearts of his countrymen. there still the words you remember george washington by today. and robert and robert e lee's time everyone knew that his father had written those words. much of harry lee admired george washington he could not copy his example. he could not imitate what he knew was george washington's greatest virtue. what was that

during the preservation of bacon's castle, reservation virginia -- preservation virginia tried to find original fabric if possible. rather than replacing the entire being, it was only the joint that needed to be replaced. as much of the original material was salvaged and new material was put in for preservation. you can see the same thing with the bricks. going up over here, you can see the continuation of the original beams in the house. again, the example of the grooving that matches the fireplace. this was all part of the original house. we did a paint analysis. some of the earlier layers were gold. it is interesting to imagine we have our 1711 probate inventory, and the room is done to what the house looked like when it was first completed. you have to imagine there is a possibility the beans were painted gold, which would have been neat. by the time preservation virginia acquired the property it needed a lot of restoration. the decision was pondered whether we needed to bring the house completely back to the original state. the preservationists decided we wanted to show this house

that is a new virginia economy. the reason we are able to do it, i was able to convince the ceos in china that we had eight workforce that you are going to have 15 years from today. you will not invest in a state unless they are convinced you will have a workforce for 30 years. it starts with early childhood education. everybody is beginning to get on the bus here to figure out what we need to do to compete in a global economy. every governor faces the same challenges i have today -- growing and diversifying the economy. i think we have now gotten to the point where preschool and early childhood education is not a partisan issue at all. it is nonpartisan, in fact, it is bipartisan. everyone needs to work together. as we move forward, i want to find the department of education. virginia was one of 18 states that was rewarded a grant with $17.5 million. in our first year, they will continue to support us. we work very hard to get this grant. it was very competitive, and i'm so proud of our team that put this together.
