nearly two decades before the official founding of the university of virginia thomas jefferson wrote to artist charles wilson peale in january 1802 i have for a considerable time been meditating a plan of a general university for the state of virginia on the most extensive and liberal scale that our circumstances would call for jefferson considered the university to be one of his three greatest achievements with the declaration of independence and the virginia statute for religious freedom. in his post-presidential years he was able to devote himself to fulfilling the dream of an academical village. today, we'll hear from andrew j o'shaughnessy about jefferson's aspirations for his university. his book is a twin biography of jefferson and retirement and of the university of virginia's first years in seeking to understand figures from the past the ability to read their own recorded thoughts is immensely valuable today's author andrew j. o'shaughnessy used founders online in researching. this book founders online a website hosted by the national archives through the national historical

he thought it was a way of making virginia more independent, more self directed. again, after the revolutionary war when he adopts a program of diversified farming that he thinks will be the foundation of the new nations commercial prosperity. that it will provide the common commercial interests that will tie the nation together. farming was another demonstration of the kind of leadership to be exercised, as well as political and military. i also want to then reconstruct a side of the historic side washington that is often forgot about. especially represented in this famous sculpture, the french sculptor, who don, created for the state capitol in richmond. that is the celebration of washington as the american -- his return from the army to farming recalled the example of the roman general who had left his farm to defend the republican battle. refused an offer of arbitrary power and refused to his -- life as a farmer. in the 18th century the image of washington at the plow held an idea of civic virtue. it became a similar representation made all the more powerful b

virginia governor glenn youngkin. start off by saying democrats had been closing the gap in the generic preference poll but republicans seem to have found some new momentum in recent days. this new commitment to america that kevin mccarthy unveiled last week, do you believe that is the prescription for victory for the republicans in november? >> i do believe that we need to focus on common sense solutions to these kitchen table issues that voters across america are expressing as you just shared, we saw it in virginia last year, of course the democrats want to talk about things that really aren't what is affecting people every day. and it is, inflation, and cost of living, it's crime, education, it's the reality that the border is a national security crisis that's impacting all states. virginia is a border state because of the fentanyl overdoses we are dealing with. these are the most important issues that i think the republican candidates are showing that we have common sense solutions to and as i've traveled around t

washington found in this cultural form or a new role for the virginia planter. that the virginia planter could take on this role of demonstrating new kinds of farming that would diversify farming and open up new kinds of commercial opportunities. what is even more surprising is this commitment to british husbandry increases overtime. it becomes stronger and stronger after the revolutionary war. after independence from the empire. washington is still deeply committed to these british models. in 1785 he announces that he wants to undertake a complete course of husbandry and best farming counties in england. it is not just cultivation methods or new crops, this is a very elaborate and complicated system of cooperations integrated with livestock management and especially restoration of the soil. stewardship of the soil. it leads him to redesign the entire agricultural landscape over thousands of acres on mount vernon. it also leads him to demand that the enslaved cannot construct a formal infrastructure of farming, including what washington thought were the largest

so it's virginia, it's super hot like it is here. you want the kitchen building away from the main house, the heat away from the main house. and then this could have been for offices. you had these cornered fireplaces and stairway. the parts of the complex are beautifully balanced. everything is symmetrical. you can draw a straight line through the center of this main house and the two sides of the complex are mirror images of one another. that classical symmetry is modeled on what the palladio head done in his series of great villas in italy that many of which you can still go visit today. these were famous because not only were they thought to be very classical and accomplished in terms of design, but palladio also had as his clients wealthy farmers, people who lived on agriculture. they were very well educated, they were liberally educated and sophisticated. therefore the style is associated with a kind of style of living in the countryside, living off agriculture, but not just being bumpkin, hay seed, farmer guy. but being also s

and he had pushed for that in virginia.ou start to step backwards when from where is in paris for a variety of reasons. for political reasons, for the doubt that he wasn't. and he was never quite that same passionate advocate. in fact he was quite quiet on the subject. but instead, because he really needed the money that enslaved people were giving him from their work in the fields. and even at times when he sold them. so in fact, in january 1785, it was jefferson's first year in paris you've got himself deeper in debt, needed money, and he authorized his overseer back home to sell 31 people and auction. so i start to view jefferson differently when i saw just how important slavery was to his entire life. and that i couldn't separate it out. it's that jefferson the architect is one, thing jeff is in the slow lavender is different. they are all connected. and i start to pay more attention to the lives of these other people at monticello. and kind of went off script where i decided to put down following jefferson's guide arou

and in virginia he is responsible for the design of the capital. at richmond still survives, although expanded in the 19th and 20th century. so you see these. wings on either side and then on the right hand side. you have a painting from the 19th century which gives a better sense of what the original? building looked like and if you think that this too looks like a temple there's a good reason for it. jefferson before serving his president was an envoyage of france lived in paris and while he was there. he commissioned a model. of this building on the left the nasal carey. which is a roman temple that was built in southern france. at the time that the roman empire was colonizing areas all around the mediterranean. and this temple jefferson thought of as a really perfect example. of a roman temple and of the use of the corinthian order which is a style of classical architecture that uses these very elaborate collaborate capitals supported the entablature up above it. now it's based on the idea of a greek temple. of which we have a very good approxi
