breaking news out of virginia beach. we have just learned that a navy helicopter crashed, 18 miles off the coast of cape henry in virginia beach, this morning. the u.s. coast guard is reporting five people were on board this helicopter when it went down. and an active search is under way. officials say an 87-foot patrol boat out of portsmouth and a small boat out of station little creek are responding. and we will bring you more information as soon as we get it. >>> other other top story, water companies around the region have their hands full. they are fixing as many as 40 water main breaks caused by the historic cold weather. it is the most recent break that crews are working on to fix here in the district. and authorities hope to have this water main break repaired along connecticut avenue in northwest, in time for the evening commute. now the cold is making it harder for the crews to make the repair, just to dig in to the ground, before they move on to the next water main break. so we could be seeing warmer temperatu

even as far south as virginia beach. typically known for its warmer weather. actually, you've been seeing some significant snowfall due to this storm system. it started here. now it's pushing northeast. you can see on the satellite picture really starting to wrap up and become stronger and more intense, and still some areas out here you can see some significant snow totals. but you see all these lines really close together. that's creating almost blizzard-like conditions. so the wind is blowing. you have the snow, so reduced visibility. this is going to continue to move off towards the northeast, though, an additional 20 to 40 centimeters across the canadian maritimes. good news is improving behind it. but you will be digging out. already know that there is thousands of flights that have been canceled up and down the eastern seaboard because of this storm system already. it is going to continue to push northeast. the other thing is that cold air i mentioned, accompanied by the gusty winds, really is making for some bitterly cold windchills. not to mention anot

the search for that sailor who was missing after the navy helicopter crashed off the coast of virginia beach. two men were killed during that training exercise yesterday. this is a pick scher of one of the victims who was from north carolina. two others sailors were rescued, but a fifth crewmember remains unaccounted for. they searched the atlantic for more than 30 hours before suspending their search. still not clear what caused this crash. >>> new tonight, fairfax county schools plan to cut more than 730 positions next school year. superintendent karen garza says the cuts necessary to balance the budget. the school district hopes to increase its budget by 2.4% next year, and this includes new fees for advanced placement and international baccalaureate programs. they have grown by more than 15,000 students, more than the total enrollment of alexandria city public schools combined. >>> a family feud over nearly a million dollars in inheritance money. wait until you hear what a maryland father did to try to get his hands on the money. >>> maryland is looking to the past to improve the future.
