virginia, maryland and delaware right now. that's happening as irene heads north. new york city is getting ready for irene. very busy there. new video shows a truck delivering food and other supplies to a shelter this morning. parts of the city including lower manhattan could see major flooding and fleet to go a mandatory evacuation for 250,000 people. irene is also forcing the shutdown a large subway system. at 9 a.m. pacific time, new york will halt service on its subways and buses. six approximately people ride the subway every day. the tack of locking up east station will take eight hours to complete. there's also a mad rush for supplies. nothing left on the shelves. everything from mom and pop stores to chain department stores report selling outs of hurricane supplies such as batteries, flashlights and water. residents seem to be grabbing anything they can find preparing for the worst. >>> new york city's airports will close today leaving passengers across the country and here in the bay area stranded. ktvu's ali rasmus is live now at sfo, with when the passengers can finally get back into the air. co

irene killed four people, blocked roads and knocked out power to thousands in virginia alone. in nor knock city streets are clogged. may error paul frame joins me. what's the latest there? >> actually we have come through this thing pretty well. we didn't have quite the storm surge that we had forecasted. we had a number of trees down and we've cleared most of them. the utility power has been restored. we still have about 36,000 residences without pawer. all in all. we're thank many it wasn't worth. >> absolutely, efederally when you consider the downed treats that you just mentioned. when we put it in perspective that's not a huge number affected, but if you're one of those you're not feeling good. but what's your concern at this point? >> right now we've been trying to dry everything out. we didn't experience as much beach erosion as expected. folks are returning to their homes. we evacuated about 25%, 30% of the city, especially everyone in the low-lying areas, they're coming back, and we'll have a better assessment as the day goes on. >> when do you anticipate most of those evacuated will b
