that what was formerly maryland washington county and georgetown and then on the virginia side of the river the old city of alexandria and alexandra county. so this is the city that they have created. there is local government. locals cannot vote for their national leaders but they can vote for local ones. city council for the mayor but the problem is in the city actually starts developing it turns out that there are a few stipulations that aren't exactly friendly to local governments. taxation takes the local government that but does not apply to federal property which is the only thing worth anything. it's a tough burden if you were a small merchants struggling homeowner or anything like that because eventually because of lack of funding for local governments forced to raise the taxes to the highest in the country which is amazing for a city that at the outset only had 8000 people and only grows by about 1000 people year after that. so long was struggling in that way also struggled politically. you have to remember is washington city is a great federal project of the federalists. alexander hamilton th

during booktv's visit to wheeling, west virginia we met with a man who detailed the lives of the city founders and live on the frontier. >> the title was actually a school teacher from that era. he was named william darby and when he wrote to dr. draper whose manuscripts that primed a lot of the research he called this the heroic age and hooe was a teacher and taught the first settlers here. the area was first opened for settlement in 1768. with that the first family's that came to the area were probably considered the zanes. they are considered the founders of wheeling. this was the western theater of the american revolution. fort wayne was named after the governor of virginia. early of fincastle was one of their names. and the royal governor was thrown out and patrick henry came in as the revolutionary general and it was renamed henry. the forts are located for a strategic reason. wheeling was considered the head of navigation on the ohio during the low water season. it made sense to build a fort here. beyond that fort henry and wheeling had a symbiotic relationship as forts were bu

virginia man has been found dead. >> hari simran hadn't been seen or heard from since tuesday when he went for a hike in the mountains about an hour south of mexico cityirginia bureau chief jeff goldberg is outside of his yoga studio with reaction tonight. jeff? >> alison in the last 45 minutes, we spoke with a close friend of hari simran who read us a statement from the family. family saying that simran was found dead with a fatal injury to the head that he had fallen during that hike. that he died instantly and did not suffer. mexican officials saying his body was found in a ravine in a mountainous area near the town where he was staying. take a look. this is the last picture seen of hari simran. it was sent to his wife. it was a selfie he had taken during that hike one afternoon of december 30th. he later sent a text message to her saying he was running late and another text to a friend saying he was lost. that was the last anyone had heard from him. simran and his wife traveled to a yoga retreat last friday in tepoztllan, hour south of mexico city. on tuesday, he went on that hike in mountains wearing a t-shirt and shortsz carrying only a liter of
