virginia. the nation's biggest cities, including new york and boston, are bracing for the worst. >> if you are in an area where your governor or mayor has said there's a mandatory evacuation order, please abide by that order. and even if you're not in an evacuation zone, please know this is a big storm. it covers a lot of territory. be prepared. have some food, flashlight batteries, extra water, the sorts of things that will help you get through in case particularly power is out for some period of time. >> we've got reporters and live crews up and down the u.s. east coast to bring you the very latest on hurricane irene. reynolds wolf, john zarrella, brian todd are in the bull's-eye right now along the north carolina coast. athena jones is in the nation's capital. and reynolds wolf is feeling irene's fury as it batters the north carolina coast right now. he is in kill devil hills on the outer banks. you can see the wind on the those outer bands of that storm right now slapping him around there. reynolds, give me more specifics. what's going on? >> reporter: absolutely. the latest we have here,

taking it directly on landfall into parts of north carolina and not only that up through virginia and right into new york possibly as a category 1 hurricane. and this is a very large storm. hurricane-force winds extend 80 miles out from the core. and then you have tropical storm-force winds out some 300 miles. that's simply a large storm. it's going to be devastating as it moves onshore. all right. we have here in the bay area some low clouds and some fog surging onshore. this weekend, i think will actually see improving weather as high pressure is going to start to sneak back in here. temperatures up in the 80s a few low 90s by tomorrow afternoon inland so still hot in some spots. inside the bay 60s into san francisco, possibly 80s into the san jose area. and out along the coastline low clouds and fog and some drizzle likely to continue there and cooler temperatures mainly into the 60s. fog and low clouds making their way back onshore. high pressure though building in so i think tomorrow maybe just a couple degrees warmer around the bay area. right now, working on a fantastic evening outside. it's 86 de

virginia are without power. irene is expected to arrive in new york city sometime tomorrow morning. the big concern there, flooding from this storm surge. president barack obama visited fema headquarters just a short time ago, earlier today and he said the government is ready to deal with whatever happens. the president has already declared state of emergencies in nine states, they are north carolina, virginia, maryland, new jersey, new york, connecticut, massachusetts, rhode island and new hampshire, these states now can get federal aid to help them recover from any hurricane damage. all right, let's head down to the mid-atlantic area, ocean city, where they are starting to see the storm right now. it's windy, it's rainy. >> reporter: it's not much of a beach day here in ocean city, this is one angry, hungry city, sometimes these waves are coming right up to where we're standing and threatening the dunes which were built to try to protect all this valuable real estate here. fortunately these buildings are pretty much empty right now. there were about 200,000 people in this town, ho

new jersey. the coastal areas of delaware, areas of virginia beach, north carolina's outer banks obviously and new york's island, fire island and all low-lying areas of new york city. more than a quarter million people affected there. let's go to where it's all happening. mark potter in nags head, north carolina. how are things looking there? >> reporter: hi, chris. just now in the last hour and hour nast and a half feeling the first effects ever the storm. i think i see it on the horizon and i have my raincoat ready. my notebook, getting that kind of wind. the surf is kicking up now a lot more. much more angrier than this morning. the big concern here is, of course, it's going to get a lot worse into tonight and much worse tomorrow. and the biggest problem that emergency managers are fearing here involves the surf. if this storm comes as they fear, just to the west of the outer banks, there could be a special problem with the storm surge. first, the leading winds coming counterclockwise, could push water from the atlantic on to the eastern shore here of the outer banks, and then as the storm goes up to
