the virginia tech shooter murdered people, six lives were taken at a movie theater in colorado. in each case, the person showed signs of severe psychotic behavior and they were paranoid. 13 people were killed in colorado. one of the murderers was found out to be a psychopath. none of them had snapped. they had all left clues, pieced together after it was too late. we still don't know much about the shooter who lived in this home. but there is something else to consider. what medications, if any, he was on. and specifically, talking about antidepressants. if you look at the studies in other shootings like this that have happened, medications like this were a common factor. now, i want to be clear. not saying that antidepressants can't be effective. but research shows that there is a key between when somebody starts and stops, and decreased judgment and making somebody out of touch. none of this is an excuse, and it is never just one thing. none of these behaviors will fully predict or explain why. but soon again, there will be hind sight that might just help prevent another trage

. >> governor ridge, what is your experience particularly with the virginia tech shooting aftermath? what does it tell you about where we need to start reacting particularly to senator feinstien? >> i think everyone has really focused on a word you used.

there is a virginia tech, so to speak, 30 to 34 americans die every day due to gun violence. what gets me most frustrated, i guess, is we all agree in america. in fact, if you look at gun owners, i work with a coalition of mayors called the coalition against illegal guns. a republican pollster polls gun owners and nra members and you get from 70% to 90% depending on the commonsense issues we can do to make our country safer. let me give you one example. roughly 40% of guns sold in america are sold in what is called a secondary market, in other words, private sales where there's no federal registration at all. where people with criminal backgrounds -- you could get someone on the terrorist no-fly list who can't get on a plane, but they can go to many of these secondary markets and buy weapons. overwhelmingly, 84% of gun owners in america, 82% of gun members in america, 72% of nra members, believe that should change. changing that alone gives a difference. i'll give you an example how. 1 out of 2 women murdered with a gun are murdered by an intimate, someone they know well. in
