i was happy after the virginia tech shootings that work -- work with the nra members to make sure weassed the bill to get more records into the background check system but with all of those things, unless we require background checks on all sales we are not going far enough. yes, they are talking about things that make sense and yes, they've talked about things in the past and wayne lapierre supported universal background checks in 1999 and changed his mind apparently now but we need to make sure we do a back ground check on nearly every sale if we keep people with records and, those who are dangerously mentally ill from getting guns. >> lou: are those folks in the system. >> we need to get more records in. after virginia tech we learned 10 to 20% of the records are in the system and the act passed in december '07 and, signed by president bush in january of '08 gave states incentive to put more records in but a lot of states have more to do. when virginia tech happened, indiana had zero records and now we have more records in the system now but there is a long way to go. at the time

just in a little summary of what happened at virginia tech. >> personally at virginia tech i was shockedabout rema's death on the news when they started scrolling the pictures and names of the victims. i was shocked. it was the first time i've been touched by gun violence. and not the last i guess. >> all of us have been -- have heard about it but you knew someone who was actually brutally killed. >> right. >> senselessly at virginia tech university. so how frustrated are you right now when you see the tougher gun control legislation seemingly stalled? >> i am very frustrated. these are people, most of whom have never been touched by gun violence. this is an epidemic. this is a public health crisis. and i am very frustrated. i was extremely frustrated right when i first started this. that we didn't even have -- i was frustrated to even come across any opposition. this is common sense. this is common sense. >> did you speak to the president personally about this today? did you have a chance to exchange a few words with him and the vice president for that matter? >> yes. i was lucky enough

they were joined on the final leg by members of the virginia tech cycling team. for reasons that you can understand. two of the riders today are the parents of a child from sandy hook. the political pressure against gun reform is always there. it's always there. everything you look at in this country that's ever happened on gun reform. you can also see the political pressure there on the other side. it always looks like it does now, but it is being met by a political force for gun reform that appears to be definitely equal if not greater, both in magnitude and intensity and commitment and that organized pressure is buoyed by the fact that gun reform has the country. a "washington post" poll today on gun policy. asked americans if they support universal background checks for anybody who wants to buy a gun. the nra opposes that, but what proportion wants checks? the proportion is is 91%. 90 freaking 1%. for comparisons sake, if you ask the american people, do you support capitalism, 64% yes. do you like italian food? 85% less. is it important to take a vacation? 61

i know when virginia tech happened, my home state of indiana had zero records, and now we're up to --e got more in the system now, but there's a long way to go. at virginia state, there were just four records in new york state. there's a lot of work to be done and needs to be a top priority, unless you do background checks on every sale, it doesn't make a difference. lou: yet, the priority, eric, has been on assault weapons ban that institutes such a small fraction of the overall problem here. your thoughts on that of the gun owners association? >> well, you're right. it would cover just minorities of the murders. as you noted before, lou, the more people die at the hands of clubs, hammers, and things like that than these so-called assault weapons, which, really, what they are after is banning common self-defense firearms. we're thankful this last saturday there was a very key vote in the senate. senator mike lee offered an amendment to restrict the ability of the senate to pass gun control requiring future gun control proposals to have a two-thirds vote. now, the amendment failedded

for example, the shooting at virginia tech.i can understand that the tabloids had a field day with this kind of stuff. it is the motto of "the new york times" what it does is turn monsters into celebrities and they don't deserve this kind of and by the way there is a whole following in all sorts of pure finale a trying it on for the purpose of this, of course. as adults who look at this and say oh, they are monsters, how many 14 year olds say, goodness, we got even with all those bullies and jocks and the nasty teachers and they are famous for it and on the cover of time magazine. so i can do from the perspective of the teenagers, it's very different. so i think given all of the attention that we pay to the shooters and the psychological autopsies afterwards, in the aftermath of these cases survivors invariably question why certain warning signs were ignored. warning signs that even include talking about killings. why didn't someone do something about it and stop them? well, if anything, they are yellow flags and the only turn

after virginia tech people started talking about it.hen with each large shooting people starting to talk about it even more. aurora, certainly newtown. but also people now are being more and more aware of the shootings happening in their communities every single day because those numbers are coming out. how many people have died since newtown. people are more aware. like why aren't we doing something about it. the media has stayed on to this story and when you think about time wise that's amazing. usually a story would last ten days. >> so what i'm hearing from you actually is you think that it did permanently alter or all terrify for a longer period of time the conversation about gun deaths and the politics of the gun issue? >> yes. absolutely. plus people are looking at now, looking at is it a public health issue also which i happen to believe. i've been talking about that for many, many years. >> see, i think while noewtown was a catalyst was obama's response. obama could have gone out and done what i've seen him do many times before

tonight, it is very clear the plan was for another virginia tech. murder on a scale that would forever change one of the biggest universities in america. you see, the student behind the foiled murder rampage wrote a checklist. and the last line "give them hell." just one of the many new details that police revealed today. there is a video from a camera that one officer had mounted on his uniform. look at this. [buzzer] >> team as shooter made its way into the dorm room yesterday just after midnight. that's the fire alarm in the background. investigators say the suspect pulled that alarm himself. the suspect in an attempt to get his fellow students out into the open to make them easy targets. the suspect's roommate managed to call 911. >> the fire alarm went off. i opened the door to see what was going on. and he is there with like some sort of like gun, like large assault gun. i don't know if it's a real gun or what it is. but i just saw it and i slammed my door shot and locked it. >> slammed it shut and locked it officers arrived within three minut

but i think seriously though, that the reason that in the past, with columbine, aurora, virginia techpeople forget about it after a few weeks and we move on to whatever else. people are not moving on. they are not moving on after newtown. and i think the reason is, and i can tell by the mail i get, there are too many parent who everyday drive their kids to school, and they open the door and this is what -- i mean, i've got this, more than a dozen times from mothers writing me and saying, i now when they open the door and i see them walk down the sidewalk into the school, i am sick that i have to feel like, is that last time i'm going to see my child. >> yeah. >> and because of that, because sense school went back into session after newtown, since january, millions of moms and dads have been dropping their kids off at school everyday and in the backs of their mind, they know where they live. they live in the united states of america. where an insane person can go buy a drum that can fit a hundred rounds of ammo in it. they know their child is at risk. that's why this issue isn't going

oil spill, virginia tech and the aurora movie theater shootings. money must go immediately to the victims with no questions asked. >> do not attempt to restrict how the funds will be used. do not attempt to educate or explain. here is the money. it's yours. >> what did you find in your experience that makes that so important? >> who am i to put myself in the shoes of victims and tell victims with the best of intentions you can only do this with the money. you say that, in my experience, and you are fueling the very emotional anger and frustration of people that are innocent victims. >> we took a look at one tragedy where that is exactly what happened. it was april 1995, timothy mcveigh, an army veteran with a grudge against america parked his truck full of explosives in front of the murrah federal building in oklahoma city. in total, 168 people were killed including 19 children under the age of 6. d deloris watson worked in the building for at&t, but was off-site when the news came. >> when you heard there was an explosion at the federal building?

that's a virginia tech or newtown tragedy every single day.ut under most circumstances, most days you don't hear about that. it doesn't make news other than locally sometimes. that's changed since newtowns. people are seeing the mass shootings happening and the scale is grandeur. as a result, when one or two people have killed in idaho when you wouldn't have paid attention before, suddenly it's making headlines. our staff makes sure when people are killed who normally wouldn't pay attention to that that word gets out. >> what do you make of that kid killed down in virginia? sad case. the kid is drunk. comes home. sneaks in the window he thinks is his house. it's the neighbor's house. the guy kills him. >> right. >> with a gun. >> there's a difference between what happens in your house and what happens outside of your house. the law has said if you have an intruder in the house and no way to escape, you can use deadly force. our concern is like in florida that pass these shoot first laws that say if you are able to claim that you were concerned

after virginia tech and other shootings, according to some political science research, you had about 1,000 mentions per week of gun control in articles that faded back very quickly, as i mentioned. on this one it is up to over 2,000 and lasting well after six weeks' post event. so we're in a fundamentally different conversation. the reason why i'm not really optimistic about getting a lot through congress is that's all about the issue attention cycle. that's about the active energy and the active discussions and what we do. but you have a lock in congress on most of these issues. by the nra and on both parties. while it may have long term effects, i don't think it changes the legislative strategy. >> i think that's right. especially when you look that several republicans have indicated, they would filibuster. gun control legislation and you have several democrats even who haven't come out and said they're on both with it. i think it is hard to see how we get at least universal background checks through the senate. at this point, if i could sound maybe a little bit more of an optimist

the shootings at virginia tech, tucson, arizona, all involved handguns using magazines with more than 10 rounds. high-capacity high-capacity magazines is not required for defending one's home or sports shooting. it enables shooters to inflict maximum damage on humans. forcing such a person to stop and reload can save lives. that was the case in tucson, arizona when a 30-round magazine ran out and he had to reload. he was tackled. i go to bed every night wondering whether i will be awakened by another dawn call which notified me of the horrifying mass shooting in aurora, or whether i will receive calls from other u.s. attorneys from around the country confronting the same sort of event in their own home state. i'm proud to serve as a u.s. attorney for colorado. it is the state i grew up in. it proudly honors american institutions, including the ownership of firearms as guaranteed by the second amendment. i also share the view of most law enforcement professionals and ordinary americans that there should be reasonable proposals to restrict the sale of military style assault weapons and

if there was a common thread in the virginia tech, tucson, aurora and newtown massacres, it was the mental illness of the shooter. this bill does nothing to deal with that. the commonality is not the type of guns used. some use pistols, some use rifles and at least two shotguns were found at the scene of these crimes. the common thread was mental illness. no one wants disturbed young men or women, for that matter, to have access to firearms. unfortunately, this legislation focuses not only the perilous-- not on the perilous intersection of guns but on cosmetic features of certain firearms. we should refocus our effort to make sure the current background check works to scene out the dangerously mentally ill. -- screen out the dangerously mental ill. now, i'm encouraged by some, including senator graham, have proposed legislation to patch the holes in the background check system that enable the mentally ill to buy guns. that's the type of legislation that would bring a consensus and would be a real solution to a real problem. but sadly we seem to be focused on window dressing and risk puttin

in virginia, we had the horrible virginia tech shooting. i'm glad to see the congressman from virginia here. i was on abpanel to rewrite our commitment laws and we changed it. we changed it to substantial likelihood of danger. we thought it would make a change. the next year, the legislature cut $50 million and today, i.g. report came out that 70 persons who fit the old standard of a danger to themselves or others are treated in the hampton roads area because there is no beds. chicago was in iowa, they were telling me they had people in emergency rooms 24, 48, 36 hours because there is no place to go. my own son had to wait to find a bed. you have to understand, dr. welner hit it on the head, that you need to change the commitment law but you can't do that unless you back it up with other laws because there is no place to go. >> can i just make a quick comment? what makes it worse in virginia is we have a hospital that is dedicated to mental health in many ways that has empty floors because they don't have the money to open up the floors. >>
