the queen of england today visited ireland.nd while it's not quite nixon to china, and while london to dublin is just a short flight, it's something a lot of people never thought they'd see in their lifetime because of the troubles between the two neighbors that go way back. from dublin tonight nbc's john yang reports on a trip that was indeed a long time coming. >> reporter: just a few years ago this would have been unthinkable. the queen of england welcomed on independent irish soil, wearing emerald green, no less. the last british monarch to visit here, king george v, 100 years ago. in between there's been a bloody war of independence and decades of conflict called the troubles over britain's continued control of northern ireland. the queen herself lost a beloved cousin. lord mountbatten, killed by an i.r.a. bomb on his fishing boat off the irish coast in 1979. today as an irish military band played "god save the queen," queen elizabeth laid a wreath at the memorial to irish rebels killed at the hands of british forces. >> n

as one of the firefighters said, this visit will be a morale booster. it has been several days of mixed feelings. they said they were relieved from osama bin laden was killed but they say saddened because it all brought back the memories and the reason why the hunt for osama bin laden was taken in the first place. there was some celebratory moments on sunday night. one of the images that really stood out was an image from sunday night, a "new york times" photograph. firefighters from engine 54, ladder 4, went into times square, which is just right over, a couple blocks away, to take in the news of osama bin laden's death. they watched the crowd's cheer. as one of the members told me, he really teared up. he wasn't happy that osama bin laden was killed. he said he was happy to see the crowds cheering and the fact that people were proud of their country. the elation just lasted a few moments. they are always on guard. they fear retaliation. this is one of the busiest fire houses in new york city. so they are constantly on guard. carol? >> that is a great

but did the visit from -- that visit was in between -- ok, i should mention that. madam leo is from china and she's, i guess, we couldn't figure out exactly, but she's like the equivalent of hillary clinton and very high level official that came to san francisco but -- after -- visiting the president. and they made it a decision to visit one of our child development centers and when they were planning it they had anticipated that, ok, she's going to be there only half an hour, it's a tight schedule and once she got there she wouldn't leave. she just loved it there. the kids were great, the staff was great. i have to give a lot of credit to the facilities people who went in there for several days to get the place prepared for the visit and she actually stayed there for about an hour. not even then, when she was ready to leave, they jumped into the car and everybody thought, she jumped back out. and she brought out her photo album with of her grandkids to show us. it was so cute. all that, she really made an argument of how important child development is in preschool
